I for one am looking forward to football season. Should be one of, if not, the best offenses we have ever seen at State. We also should have one of the better defenses in the country.

I could have just dreamed this up but I was thinking he was a walk on at michigan. This may not mean anything but I was thinking if he's a walk on he should be able to leave and walk on somewhere else.

I have no idea
That's what I'm asking. He was never under scholarship but don't walk ons get benefits? Like swag and training and ****?

Doing absolutely zero research I THINK the deal is he can play immediately if he is granted a scholarship somewhere else. I am possibly making this up.

I think I saw somewhere that he will be eligible this fall. Don't know if it's because walkons don't have to sit out a year or some other reason. Don't know anything about him other than he had pretty good HS stats and has a strong leg. But that alone should be enough to win the job if he's eligible.

Me too but I think we all know what happens when we have high expectations for a team. '11 football, '11? basketball(whatever stansburry's last year was), and '14 baseball

I think being able to put on a uniform and find the field would win him the starting job.

This is how it'll probably play out. He is probably a walk-on from Michigan. He didn't get any playing time there so he came here. He will not start over Bell or Sobiesk. The only way you'll see this guy play is if Bell and Sobiesk both miss about 5 in a row each. Hopefully Bell will just be moved to kicking off and punting.

Earhart is perfect so far ... 1/1 ...... wouldn't surprise me if that's who he had to beat .... Bell & Sobiesk have had their chances

Probably? He's 100% a walk on from Michigan.

Maybe this guy is a good pickup but it blows my mind that we can't find a good kicker. Seems an easy sell. You'll play on TV every week, several weeks national TV. I would think most likely we have NFL scouts at every game. I guess I'm way off base but it seems an easy sell.

Just read complicated NCAA rules

apubt page 19 or 20

If you have never been recruited…
If you have never been recruited by the Division I or II school you plan to attend, you may be able to use this exception if you:
n
Have not received an athletics scholarship; and
n
Have not practiced beyond a 14 consecutive-day period at any school or participated in intercollegiate competition beforeyour transfer.

So if he was never recurited and did not get a scholarship, and did not play and did not practice for more than a 14 consecutive day period then he can transfer w/o having to sit out.
Real clear, huh?

Kickers are head cases, and streaky players. Look at Bama's kicking situation, you would think they would have Janikowski. If this kid is consistent, he would be a major upgrade for us.

Name me all the kickers in the NFL and I'll tell you that like 1 went to a college where he was on national TV every week, had scouts at every game, and was on a really good team.

I typically have that attitude towards NFL players as a whole, but it's more true when it comes to specialists. The best punter is from SMU pre-Jones for crying out loud.

The problem goes a lot deeper than us just looking for a good kicker. If I'm a coach (I'm not) I NEVER take a MHSAA kicker. Ever. Not once in my tenure. Mississippi has the most generous field goal posts in the country and they kick from a tee. I'm recruiting soccer players, JUCO kickers, or I'm offering a full scholarship every 4 years to a kid from Ohio (or somewhere comparable). Getting a kid with no ties to Mississippi high school football is a start. I'd like to see the trend continue.

But it doesn't need to stop there. Mullen needs to back off on retooling our kickers' stance and making them lift weights.

It's just hard to Judge kicking talent anywhere. Look at Stephen Gostkowski...Graduated from Madison Central. Went to Memphis for baseball and walked on for football.

I do like the idea of soccer talent.

A quick glance at the top kickers shows this to be completely false

I picked a top kickers list off the interwebs and went through the top 11 or so (because I'm lazy and quit then). While it's a subjective list, these are supposedly the top kickers, and they're all at least decent. All but one played in a BCS conference, and most from big time schools. All were on TV a lot

Blair Walsh- UGA
Justin Tucker- Texas
Janikowski- FSU
Dawson- Texas
Zuerlein- Missouri Western
Jay Feely- Michigan
Connor Barth- UNC
Dan Bailey- OSU
Forbath- UCLA
Bryant- Baylor
Brown- Nebraska

Earhart was a senior and Bell has been moved to punting only.

Mullen named Sobiesk the starting kicker going into fall camp. It will be Sobiesk and McGrath battling for the kicking job.

Adam Vinatieri - SDSU
David Akers - Louisville (while a member of CUSA)
Matt Prater - UCF

You missed out on the part where I said "on a really good team." Justin Tucker finished on a subpar Texas team, the kicker for Miami was the guy who helped gift wrap that MSU win at The Swamp...

The Polish Leg was the only kicker I could make off the top of my head that played for a really good team on national TV every weekend. But I'll add Walsh. I didn't mean "1" to be literal. My point was that you have no better chance of making the NFL if you're an All-SEC selection or you're clutch in D2. You have no financial insentive as it is to go to MSU as a walk on, he's probably just going to go to a school he likes or is close to home.

As it stands MSU is not close to home or a favorite of anyone worth a damn because Mississippi kickers suck.

And it's not like those guys were missing them from 45+ yards out. I'd be willing to bet that their combined avg distance on misses was somewhere around 37 yards. Pathetic

I could be wrong, but I can't fathom Mullen even taking a look at a walkon from Michigan if he thought that there was a chance that he'd have to sit out a season. That said, it's not like many other teams are dealing with our kicking situation

Soccer talent is where it is at.

Brauchle was a soccer guy who later found out he could kick. If I remember correctly his dad was the coach of his high school.
