Once again, Locke shows his agenda

Even though it doesn't really deserve a shot at that No. 2 seed, which earns the holder thereof a first-round bye in next week's SEC Tournament, MSU can get it with wins in its last two ballgames (Wednesday vs. Florida, Saturday at Ole Miss) and Auburn losses in its final two (the other being Saturday vs. division leader LSU).
Hey Brad, the team with the second best record in the West gets the number two seed. If State wins two and Auburn loses two, that team will be State.

not only is he 2HD, but what does "deserving" have to do with anything? It's not college football.

If we're 1 game out of 2nd place with 2 games to go, then we damn sure deserve to have a chance at the #2 seed. And if by some miracle we do win 2 and AU lose 2, who else would Locke propose we give the #2 seed to?

2HD editorializes as though anyone cares about his opinion. The shame is that he gets paid to do that.

Until the lazy bastard stops skipping road games to watch them from his living room I really don't care what he says. I'm still dumbfounded that the beat writer for a SEC school at a decent size newspaper is even given the option of missing a men's conference basketball game.

It's that he's told that the paper isn't going to pay for him to go to road games. He's still a bad writer, but him missing road games is probably more due to the budget than to him being lazy.

He would just pay his own way and go anyway. Hell, that is his only job to follow MSU sports. Do it well or don't do it at all.

He has covering the Itawamba vs Yazoo game, and was up in the booth w/me. He was wearing his Auburn cap, Auburn hoodie, and prolly his orange/blue panties. I'm sure he has a blow up doll of Tommy T and Pat Dye. Pretty much looks down his nose at MSU and OM.

section that it was his choice to miss at least one of the games. I think it was UGA.

they were both pretty decent beat writers for MSU. They moved Parrish (a UL Monroe grad) to the Ole Miss beat and Greg ended up the basketball SID at State. Brad Locke writes like he should be covering Smithville vs. Hatley football for the Amory Advertiser.
Say what you will about Kyle. I think he's great. Sekou Smith great. That kid will end up covering the Yankees for the New York Times or something.

Where are they now department: Sekou Smith is the NBA/Hawks beat writer for the Atlanta Journal Constitution, covering a professional team for one of the 10 largest newspapers in the country. He was damn good.

Kyle is great. I think he's already passed Ian, who I liked, and is approaching Sekou's level as a beat writer. His use of the blog is outstanding.

I liked his work, I really did. However, he fell into the trap of liking the team he was covering a little too much. One year he had me believing that we had the best recruiting class in the SEC.

I was totally against Veazey, but he's won me over with his objectivity. He goes about his business like a professional.

Bubba wrote for the Clarksdale Press Register. Not a top newspaper in the state. Also, Brad hasn't approached the level of douche Bubba did.

are the same ones that won't go to a doctor that went to Ole Miss or watch Fox News because of Shepherd Smith. Look, Ole Miss has a very good journalism school. We have a very good engineering school. That's that.

Veazey is as good as it gets with new media (blogging, tweeting, etc.) and he's a great writer. He's exactly what you want in a beat writer. Locke is a high school writer that had all the chips fall at the right time (Gregg leaving, economy limiting new hires). He could not get another SEC beat job, whereas Veazey could be considered for any job. Like I said, I expect Kyle to be big time - he's only 26 and he's accomplished what many sports writers want to accomplish in their lifetiime.

Veazey = Bart Gregory (up and coming, professional, talented)
Locke = Jason Crowder (wannabes)

on the broadcast the other day, he said about a grounder to first "and the first baseman will take it himself and step on the bag, how do you score that? 3 to 3? I'm showing my ignorance here but I just don't know." I felt sorry for him, I truly did.

I don't know about you, but if my employer told me that I had to pay my own way for my travel if I wanted to make any trips, I would be staying home too, especially in a weak economy.

The "even though they don't deserve it" comment is really poor, almost shocking, but I can't say I'd blame him for staying home if the paper isn't going to pay for his travel. He's doing a job in a dying business, working for an employer that is probably in danger of going under. I'd be saving as much money as possible for the inevitable lay off.

The guy is nice and all, and he seemingly loves MSU, but he is a total Coach34 when it comes to all sports. Someone told me that he would make a great radio engineer, but was so clueless on sports that he would be horrible on talent. I was also told that the opportunity he was given to do baseball would probably be his last. He was beyond horrible.

Yes, the newspaper business is in terrible shape. And yes, there are lots of newspapers that are on the brink. But the Daily Journal is not one of them.

Every school in the SEC except maybe Florida and South Carolina is within an easy drive from Tupelo. And we are not talking about a busy work trip. A tank of gas and a $10 ticket from a scalper would suffice. Oh the horror of having to go to a baksetball game for work.

Fayettville is a solid 400+ miles away. As a matter of fact, only a couple schools could be classified as an easy drive. Athens? 350 miles. And don't forget the hotel room while you're there. Or is he driving six hours each way the same day?

edited to add: This obviously is not directed at you, VHDawg

Every newspaper is one of them. The main point is this though. Beat writers should never show opinions on their subjects and Locke just did. He's not the greatest journo in the world but give the guy a break. Nobody's going to Georgia for work on their own dime.

You're right in the sense that every paper is struggling, but the DJ is nowhere near as dire as most.

That is just stupid. I am in a job where i have to travel some and if my company did not pay for my traveling expenses I would never leave Memphis

Just report the facts and keep your opinions to yourself. I thought Locke did an excellent job covering high schools for the Daily Journal. He is a good writer and truthfully deserved the promotion to cover MSU. But continually giving his take on each piece he writes and especially being dead wrong at times makes him hard to read.

especially as a beat writer. One of his replies to a comment made on his blog is:

Really, Brad? As someone wrote in his blog comments, objective journalism at its very best.

Considering someone mentioned earlier in this thread that Locke is an Auburn homer, I am not surprised he sheepily stated that it would be a moot point.

us to bash on State and Stansbury, but its not ok for Locke to bash on us? He's right, we don't deserve 2nd place because we've played like **** the past 7 games. I know he's a writer for DJ, but the thing is, he didn't write this in his newspaper article. He wrote it in his BLOG. We don't pay to read the blog and don't have to read it if we dont want to. It's his opinion and he is absolutely correct when he says we don't deserve 2nd place. Now if he had wrote this in his newpaper article, it would be poor journalism.

Yes. Just like I can give my little brother **** all day long but I'll take offense if anyone else does it. It's the difference between in the family and outside the family.
