One big difference between Stein and Stoops teams...

Stoops had a level of success at UK that I had never experienced. The stretch with the 2019 team with Bowden at QB running it down everybody’s throat was maybe my favorite 5-6 game stretch ever.

Stein and this current group actually remind me of like a poor man’s Indiana, but I mean that in a good way. If you throw out that disastrous final 18 minutes against Bama, this team plays disciplined, high IQ football, and we’re already seeing them GET BETTER game to game. Yes, they let go of the rope, and a lot of people interpreted that as this being an undisciplined or lazy group. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Loved the good years with Stoops, but he left a permanent bad taste in the mouth the way he handled the last few years. Said it then, and I’ll say it now, he sabotaged his legacy. Just the way it is.

But let’s quit focusing on Stoops. That deadbeat is gone, and we MAY have ourselves a legit coach!

Well, he’s kinda gone but not off the payroll. The fact we have to pay him $30mil is ridiculous, some fans thought stoops did us a favor by taking that money over time, lol. He was going to get it over time anyway, now he just doesn’t have to do anything for it!

CMS probably going to win him a natty with Sark. Another year or two he’ll be a DC at a decent program.

We got a new, more modern coach/staff that can compete and win in this era of football.

Everything worked out. Thanks to CMS for the good times and for bowing out without a lot of fuss before things got bad.

Baxter would be the best back in the Stoops era. He'd give Snell a run for his money.

Baxter has been good so far but let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Snell, CRod, and Bowden were all spectacular running the ball at UK.

He led UK to the only double-digit win season I’ve ever seen. You don’t have to like him but acting like he didn‘t accomplish some pretty great things just shows you’re either ignorant or completely biased. Take your choice.

I think the biggest difference is ( and I could be wrong ) It seems Stein lets his offensive coordinator call the game. I don't think Stoops ever did, I think Stoops always was stepping on him.

The insane part is you don’t have to choose:

Stoops is the best coach we have had in 40 years. We should be proud of his tenure. I’d be shocked if Stein doesn’t eclipse him — we don’t have to decrease one to increase the other. This is a good time to be a Kentucky football fan — part of that is thanks to what Stoops help build here. Now, Stein appears primed to take things to another level, much earlier than I anticipated.

The only thing embarrassing are people who were putting down the Stein era before it even started (lose one game and you’re trash?) and the people who keep trashing the coach we just had who raised the bar here. I love Stoops, always will….but it’s hard not to love Stein even more so far.

Being rid of Calipari, Barnhart, and Stoops is like having a bunch of demons cast out of the program.

Agreed. Loved Stoops those first few years. Tough roughneck football. But he got fat and comfortable. And then turned on the fans. Just like Cal. And it says a lot he’s not really coaching anywhere at the moment, just an advisor at Texas doing diddly squat from what it seems.

the best thing he did to salvage what little respect was left was to renegotiate the buyout. Had he stuck to his guns and said “screw you pay me” it would’ve gotten very ugly very quickly.

I certainly hope Stein approaches 80% of what Cignetti has done his first two years at Indiana. The dude is obviously one of the best football coaches, if not the best in the nation currently. He took his guys and established his culture right away. He resisted the temptation to recruit “Big10” level guys and brought the guys he already had. It worked amazingly well and he has a great eye for talent. His system is run to perfection and his teams play such disciplined football on both sides of the ball.

I am very very surprised how much further along our defense is than I expected. Stein obviously has a good offensive mind. I think the future is very bright.
