One Coach who needs to be replaced....

In year 2 of Brown era, when you look at Offensive & Defensive data, its obvious both sides of the ball have taken significant steps forward this year, compared to year 1. However, there is one area that has taken a significant step backward... Seilers had our special teams performing similar to how we viewed KState all those years ago, at a high level considering the youth and year 1. However Koonz has single handily caused us to be worse then we was in the DH era. This is simply unacceptable and its OBVIOUSLY Bad coaching. Our special teams this year have been horrid, absolutely horrible & embarrassing to watch...

From a special teams perspective, Im not seeing the same level of quality under Koonz, that we saw under Seilers.

I genuinely love the staff Brown has assembled, but Koonz isnt stacking up, at least as the special teams coach... LB's have been playing great, so I dont see anything bad from his Defensive coaching responsibilities, so maybe the special teams responsibilities need to be given to another coach. How Brown wants to build this program, and the style of ball he seeks to play, esp considering many of the disadvantages, special teams can dictate outcome, esp in a close game vs quality opponent. We need all 3 phases to be aligned with the strategic concepts & game plans deployed. Im not sure if this is Koonz first year as special teams coordinator, so maybe its a learning experience for him too, so lets hope we see a similar level of improvement next year, yr 2 under Koonz leading special teams. So, if we dont see improvement next year, I would say Brown should just give those responsibilities to another coach on staff, esp if LB's continue to play at such a high level.. LB's have played fantastic, so maybe it just needs reassigned.. Either way, I trust Brown to analyze it after this season and make appropriate changes+decisions, as some coaches are better in certain areas than others, so I am in no way saying hes a bad coach, but just that special teams may not be his "forte", so to speak...

Just calling it as I see it...

Koonz is not a championship caliber coach(From a special teams perspective), Seilers was and we saw that result on the field. Theres NO OTHER explanation for the considerable steo back this year, compared to the first yr...

I hope we can somehow get Seilers back to Morgantown, cause Koonz needs replaced. He's the only coach on Brown's staff, that Im seeing an obvious flaw, lack of attention to detail, or strategy... I dont understand your response... When you analyze Offensive, Defensive, & Special teams, its blatantly obvious special teams is the only phase of the team that has regressed in year 2 thus far. How else would you explain the regression, with an older & more experienced roster, which has improved in all other aspects(which is awesome to see such improvement in just year 2).. I also see how well the LB's are playing, so Im not saying Koonz is a bad coach, not at all, just maybe special teams isnt his specific area of expertise.

If we are to seek the type of program we as #WVU fans want to see, we have to be honest with what we are seeing displayed on the field, then apply logic to understand why, then make appropriate changes so we are eventually competing more regularly for a BIG12 title. Again, I love the staff Brown has assembled, and I think he will take us where we want to go, as he continues to develop and improve talent level. Perfection isnt possible, but I think we can all agree our special teams play is farther from being great, then every other aspect of play.

Im not a "negative Nancy" type, or one that constantly down plays the FANTASTIC job Brown & staff are doing, in such a short period of time, but we gotta be honest with ourselves when we see aspects that should be or could be better. Esp in this league, when close games are won or lost on 1 bad play, 1 miscommunication, 1 missed tackle, 1 roughing the kicker, 1 missed FG, 1 dropped pass, or 1 punt return TD... While somethings are execution, as coaches are not always responsible for every bad play on the field, but when miscues are consistent, thats when you look elsewhere for justification.

I fully agree, Last year it was absolutely was better. It was great to finally see quality special teams play, but I dont see that level of play this year, or anything close to it. I actually think its been one of our biggest weaknesses(this year), aside from dropped passes(which seems to have improved).. While we are playing with a backup kicker, again not every issue is "bad coaching", as execution is part of it, but when you see the level of improvements that have transpired in the offense & defense, Im not seeing that same level of improvement in year 2, thus far. Like I said, maybe this is a learning experience too, so lets hope it improves as we continue to play this year. Either way, I believe in Brown to analyze it post season and make strides in this area in year 3.

Agree to disagree. Special teams just shutdown a TCU team that wins with special teams.

Buckaineer will disagree with you he will tell you the entire staff needs to go he has been saying it before the very 1st game in year 1.

Yes apparently Mario Alford, Tavon Austin, Marcus Simms, Wendell Smallwood never did a lick under Dana on special teams.

WVU is 6th in the Big12 because it's beating the bottom half more than it's losing. The previous staff did that except manage to beat Texas.

Why do people thump their chest after beating a mediocre team like we've arrived?

If this staff is so much better it's gonna be 10 win seasons and trips to Arlington every year. Either that or it's no different just less exciting.

NB is in his 2nd year and took over the dumpster fire that Dana left. Dana didn't do **** in 8 years. We have been competitive in every game this year. Give this guy a year or two and then judge.

Having good special teams players doesn't mean you have good special teams. But Dana was an average at best coach so you shouldn't be surprised.

The coverage aspects of special teams under DH was horrid tho... It literally cost us several key games.. Which is my point. Special teams can literally be the reason why you are playing in a BIG12 Championship or not... While I agree with Allen, the coverage team did play much better today, so thats promising.. As far as our returns go, I think Reese Smith or W Wright will make great returners for us, in years to come..

Special teams aside, no logical human can deny the level of improvement in both offense & defense in year 2, compared to Brown's first year. Considering how young this team is atm, this supports an optimistic perspective for the next few years, esp factoring in the talent + potential in the 2020 & 2021 classes.

I should have applied a more logical thread title, but I was a bit emotional after the Defense had stopped TCU, then ran into the kicker on a block attempt, which was a good fake job by the kicker. Still tho, special teams have been a "hold your breath" scenario this year. Similar to how it was under DH. While I see our LB's play at such a high level, maybe special teams either isnt his specific area of expertise, or this is his first year as STCoord. Either way, I think it'll be analyzed post season, and we'll see improvements in year 2 of Koonz at the helm. That said, it causes a bit of hesitancy when you see all other aspect make such improvements, and one specific area regresses. While everyone deserves a fair shake, lets see what happens in year 2 of special teams, and if its still inconsistent, then make a change of responsibility. Giving credit where its due, LB's have played great, and if Koonz can also show he can recruit well, the optimal path may be just a reassignment of responsibilities.

Ultimately this is a thread of "tough love" post... It serves nobodys best interest to not identify a "potential" weakness or area that may be cause for concern vs tough opponents, where every edge possible is needed to cue the lovely Country Roads.

Well, I've seen our punt coverage form tackle the returner when he didn't even have the ball today and also one of our guys run directly into a returner earlier this year--2 of the 3 worst plays I have ever seen. So, there's room for improvement

How many years was it before WVU tried fielding a punt again after Austin graduated because nobody could even catch the ball without dropping it? How many TD's did Dana special teams allow on Punt and Kick returns?
