Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't ever remember having a backup quarterback that is (arguably) better than the starter.
I can remember having an "Oh Hell" moment many times in the past when the starting QB got hurt. We have missed out on a few QB recruits. But I think we have a good 2nd string and appear to have a serviceable 3rd string QB.

I can remember

40 years when I wished the second string QB was better than the 1st string QB

Did Wayne Madkin start immediately? If not I'm saying Madkin was the last one. 2nd choice is Relf his senior year after losing his job to Russell.

Whether a backup quarterback is better than the starter is a subjective argument, but I actually feel like we have gone through this backup replacing the starter many, many times in Starkville.

Dak seems to be replacing Tyler.
Tyler replaced Relf towards the end of his career.
Somewhere in there Dylan Favre got a start or two.
Relf replaced Tyson Lee.
Tyson Lee took over Wesley Carroll.
Wesley Caroll took over Mike Henig.
After that my memory gets fuzzy, but I'm thinking Henig took over for Omar Conner, maybe?

Anyways, my point is it seems MSU has some sort of curse of unending backups replacing the starter who never live up to their potential (mostly in fans' eyes). Tyler has struggled, and I'm not saying he shouldn't be replaced at this point in time. I am bracing for two years down the road for when we are all calling for Williams or Staley to replace Dak. I don't know why, but that seems to be the trend.

That's pretty interesting stuff. You don't see that at most sec schools. But as someone else said, Favre never started. Mullen may make some stupid choices but I don't think he's that dumb. I think signing Favre was more about publicity than his talents.

I really hoped Favre could have been successful at MSU. Clarify: hoped not believed. The amount of positive press it would've brought us would have been ridiculous.

The problem is not the second team QB being better it`s our coaches` refusal through the DECADES to ever acknowledge that the starter could just be having a bad game and letting the second team guy play some. We ride the starter completely down the tubes(on a bad night) until the game is totally out of reach. Sherrill was notorious for doing this with Wayne and Mullen does the same thing with Tyler. Why can`t the starter be pulled on a bad night and talked to/coached for a series or two and put back in after he`s been calmed down and has his head on straight ?

Maybe I phrased it wrong. My point was that we actually have a backup QB that appears to be as good or better than the first.
In yeas past we were mostly screwed if the starter went down.
