One thing from the press conference tonight...

I am about 99% certain Mullen will be coaching the national championship game. He talked about him and Tebow making a commitment to each other in January and said he wants to follow through with the commitment. He didn't come out and say he was definitely going to be there but he pretty much laid it out there that he will be there.

I don't really like it but there's nothing we can do about it.

and let me also add what someone said in another thread - the meeting space was horrible. Stained ceiling tiles, not big enough, etc. It should have been just like the Cohen press conference.

And there's no way it would be a distraction to Florida's players or coaches.</p>

Maybe not, but it could be a distraction for Mullen. Meyer may be wary about him pulling double duty... That said, I think he'll coach in the Natty C - I think he can handle it.

the negatives of not being here is somewhat offset by the exposure our new hc will get from the NC game.

...That Mullen has told Meyer he wants to be a part of the NC. But Meyer has told him if he's going to be a head coach somewhere else, he'll (Meyer) will have to think about whether or not splitting time between the two is a good thing for the Gators.

If he thinks Mullen being there helps he coaches. If he thinks he won't be able to devote 100% to getting ready for the game, he tells him to stay in S'Vegas. Meyer damn sure ain't concerned with State. He is gonna do what's best for the Gators, not Mullen.

They talked about it a few times during the game, then when the players gave him a Gatorade bath at the end, he got a lot of airtime then too.

because he's the OC, and florida's offense gets a lot of pub. surely, they'll show the guy calling the plays a couple of times, and they'll say he's gone after the game. i'd think it'll be more like mike stoops than ed orgeron. still, though, it's not like they'll be talking about mullen and msu all night.

he wouldn't have made him his offensive coordinator. There's just no way that his being hired at MSU would be any distraction to Florida's preparations for the bowl game.

Here's what I think....I'm sure your day will be better now.

If I'm Meyer, I'd have Mullen there for as many practices as possible...remember recruiting dead period is from like Dec. 22 to Jan. 4 or thereabouts, so Mullen can't contact recruits anyway. I think they can call him, but he can't make contact. I'd have Mullen there as much as possible TO HELP TRAIN my new OC. Looks like they will move the WR coach over to OC. During the game, I'd have both of them sitting side by side in the booth with Mullen calling the game. If this were a regular bowl game with no implications, I'd let my new guy call the plays with Mullen's assistance. But for all the marbles, I'd go with the guy who helped the most in getting me there.

I don't have a problem with him going back and doing this. I think he can milk it for all it's worth by telling Bumphis to watch Harvin and say this is where you'll be in my offense and telling Patterson to watch so and so and draw up some plays with Russell next week and say watch when we run this in the game, etc. Then when Fla. beats the crap out of them, that will only help us as well. Not to mention the PR from Mullen getting mentioned on national TV that he is coaching his last game and will be moving to Miss. State.

I don't see a negative in him going. People have compared this to Croom's first class. We had like 2 commitments when Croom was hired and he didn't come to mid January. It's not like that this time.

Similar situations. Richt concentrates on Georgia so much he forgets to gameplan properly for Oklahoma in the national title game and FSU's number 1 offense in the nation looks like a high school team against the Sooners. At the same time he is taking time away from fully recruiting and preparing for his new team which sets them back as well.

It is just impossible to be fully effective at either job-you gotta cut and run to the new gig for the good of everybody involved.
