One thing I'm worried about with Tyler Russell's passing

I noticed that he never looked off a receiver. He kept his eyes on who he was throwing to almost from the start of the snap. A good defensive backfield will eat that up. Other than that, my fellow Meridian High State Championship brother did excellent.

I thought the same thing a few times. It was just his first real game though. At least He looks like He can throw the ball with accuracy. The staff should correct him staring down receivers. I think He has a chance to be Very good.

to know that we have a coaching staff in place that will correct his mistakes and truly develop all of our qb's. Unlike previousregimes, our qb's should actually improve over the course of their careers at State. I have confidence in Mullen & Co. that this willbe the case. By the way, did anyone hear the announcers and sideline reportercommenting on our DC'slast night? They were impressed by the amount of teaching & instruction going on during the ball game by Diaz & Wilson. Folks, we have a real football staff in place and it sure feels good.

It might have been more noticeable on Russell b/c he threw the ball more, but I noticed it with Relf early in the game. Certainly on the INT, but it continued. Memphis DBs weren't good enough to take advantage of it, but that will change rapidly with our next 3 opponents.

Actually he did look off on a few occasions. Can't remember exactly which plays but he did.

People need to realize that this was his first game and we have NEVER had a qb who could do what he did in his first game regardless of competition. He's gonna have hos bad games and picks, etc. but if he's given time the kid has it.

Jim Ellis interviewed Bumphis and asked him how he got so open on his second touchdown pass, and Bumphis said it was because Russell was looking off the safety, and he beat his man.

I remember on one play he's looking right right then goes back up top. That may have been it.

and watched again. Russell looked off the receiver most of the time. Only thing I noticed was he always looked right on the look off.

Relf never looked off the receiver.

I've watched the reply twice and Russell looked off receivers almost every pass. I was more impressed by that than anything else

I noticed Russell didn't mind throwing the ball right next to a DB when the DB had his back turned. That's a good technique for getting a ball to a guy who doesn't look very open except for the fact that the DB isn't in position to see the football coming.

Hope Russell was doing this on purpose and not on accident. Because his 1st TD not getting picked was by accident.

As a matter of fact, his WRs generally knew where he was going with a ball depending on the coverage.

but what worried me the most is that he floated/under threwmost of those balls over 15 yards. I think he may have been in trouble with a quality defensive backfield. Also when he is in there is no such thing as a read option; it is a straight give. On apositive note he looked very good on the play the pocket collapsed and he stepped up in it and hit the out route.

I think we're to the point where we can't believe what we saw and we're trying to find something wrong because we're MSU.

Again, let's be honest here- we're nitpicking a guy that in his first college game tied a school record for TD passes, and is the top rated QB in the COUNTRY. And in his first game no less. And he isn't a midget.

And- to add to the wool, Chris Relf completed 7 out of his 9 passes. Let's remember that we DO actually have a coach that can develop QB's- like first round pick of the entire draft and Heisman caliber QB's- as in actually won the thing, and Dan has done this with guys that aren't exactly five star guys before. Maybe it's possible that for once in our lives as MSU fans we FINALLY have a coach that can actually devleop QB's properly and knows what the hell he is doing. I know that's a foreign concept for all of us. I mean, we're used to the athlete playing QB that could run a little bit and "manage the game" while we hand it off 40 times and hope that our stud running back could carry us while defenses stacked 11 in the box.

Don't get me wrong- I'm not saying that Tyler Russell was perfect by any means and has no room for improvement, but that was honestly about as good as it's going to get from anyone in their first game.

I don't remember him floating any passes. He didn't just fire a bunch of lazer beams all the time, but you really don't want your QB to do that all of the time. Remember Mike Henig? I think he showed very good touch on his passes downfield, and he showed me that he had a good idea of WHEN to throw a pass with touch and when to gun it in there.

I don't think Auburn has a good defensive backfield. They do have a pretty good defensive front, so if you can give him time to throw I think C34 will be disappointed again.

this would be true.... as the safety jumped that route perfectly as TR stared at his receiver...luckily the memphis player couldnt make the catch or knock it down. Russell gets his first touchdown and a confidence boost instead...
after that he did a better job of looking off that I could tell.
Auburn will be the true test..not just looking off but more so how he responds when he gets hit..because he will get hit.
