One thing to remember about MSU-Okie St. in Houston.

Whether we like it or not, and I don't particularly, it's not like ESPN is asking us if we want to play OSU in Houston to open next season. They're telling us that's our opening game. I doubt we'd say no anyway, but it's not like we really have a choice. And really, if you're going to play an OOC game like that, next year looks to be a good year to do it.

Is there officially a contractual game yet? This was a replacement date for when Valley bailed out, do we actually have Okie St. on the schedule yet? I just checked HailState.com and they don't show next yrs schedule yet.

i think we might can challenge for west division next season. oklahoma state having good football is a fluke, but we're on a steady climb.

The last time we played Ok. State we had two good years...

I guess there's that. Still not a big fan though.

Oklahoma State having good football is not a fluke. They're blessed with T. Boone Pickens' money and will be a consistent contender for years to come. Not only have they started their "steady climb" before us, they're getting to a point to where they will consistently be a top 20 team. If we play OK State next year in Houston, I would feel pretty comfortable in saying that we'd be the underdog in that game.

But for those shouting for Dallas over Houston... I get that Jerry World has a bigger appeal, but Reliant is a pretty solid stadium too. They host a couple of decent sized college football games each year (Texas Bowl, Rice-Houston, UT plays here some) and it would be a great venue. It would also put the game 4 more hours from Stillwater, OK... potentially limiting the homefield advantage factor that I think OK State would have in Dallas.

Another thing to consider is this... our schedule is fickle. In odd years, it's going to be much tougher than in even years (8-4 in 2010, 6-6 in 2011 for example). It's pretty easy to figure out why too... when you look at where we play Bama, LSU, Ark, Auburn (and now aTm). Right now, we have 6 swing games (I'm counting 4 OOC, UK, and OM as predictable wins, although the OM game might not deserved that label). For the other 6 games, we have 4 that are winnable and 2 that would be considered big upsets. In even years, our winnable SEC games are at home (Aub, Ark, aTm, and TN this year) and our big upset games are on the road (LSU, Bama). In odd years, our winnable games are on the road... making the schedule that much more difficult. Hopefully we get to a point to where we can break the LSU streak and sneak up on a good Bama team... but until we do so, I'll continue to think that 10-2 is our best case scenario.

Interesting developments nonetheless... I was kind of hoping we'd continue our 4 easy OOC games, as it appeared Stricklin wanted to do.

Completely agree. Oklahoma St. is now Oklahoma's equal in that state in every way. T. Boone's money made them as much of a long-term Big 12 power as OU and Texas. They're not the old Oklahoma St. any more.

Money's only part of the equation.

They got good and won a BCS bowl, but they'll never achieve the consistency needed to actually knock OU down. At the end of the day, UT, OU, and arguably even A&M still have an upper hand in recruiting.

OSU would like to become an Oregon, a program that consistently punches above its weight, but I just don't see that happening. Like I said, I'm happy for them that they've done as well as they have, but I will be shocked if they make it to a BCS bowl (or whatever the equivalent is) more than once a decade. The Big XII falling apart is giving them a huge opportunity, but last year was a down year for both UT and OU. Do you see them finishing above either in the standings this year?

edited to add - I think if it's down to Dallas or Houston, Houston is preferable. Jerryworld is an oversized monument to vapid commercialism, the acoustics do not make for a college experience, and everything costs a damn arm and a leg (even in comparison to any other sporting event these days). Houston, as a town, sucks too, but I prefer Reliant.

I think you're a little harsh on Houston. I've lived here for 6 years and think the city offers something to all types of people. It was recently tabbed the most diverse city in the nation and consistently ranks as one of the best value cities in America. To top it off, Houston has avoided most of the economic crises of the past few years, making it that much more stable.

And I do think OK State will finish above Texas this year. Until Texas gets a QB that can go out and win a game for them, they'll continue to be 8-4, 9-3... and I think OK State will be able to match that.

Last 4 seasons, OSU has 41 wins to OU's 42. Interesting that you compare them to Oregon and call them a "program that consistently punches above its weight." What you're failing to understand is that Oregon isn't "punching above its weight." That IS its weight. And its Oklahoma St.'s too. Both Oregon and Oklahoma St. are the beneficiaries of huge donations from Phil Knight and T. Boone Pickins. They are NOT the same programs they used to be.

Let's play their no defense having asses. If the Bears can beat them, we can beat them. And it'd look good to defeat them on national tv.

I still don't understand why people compare college teams from different years... The Ole Miss team that beat OK State was a very, very good football team. Not only that, but the OK State team that lost that game, was worse than the team they put on the field last year. It just doesn't make sense to compare teams from more than 3 or 4 years prior.

It is a different style of football. Our D played to prevent big plays (bend don't break) and create turnovers...which they did 44 times last year. Also, our D played 2.5 more games worth of snaps than Bama or LSU...this is what happens when your offense plays fast. I'm guessing the only game you watched us play was against the # 1 draft pick of a qb in the fiesta bowl.

ETA, yall will be doing good to beat TAMU this year...a team we've beat the last 4 years.

No. I watched you play against Iowa State too. Great defensive performance up there in Ames.

Lol. Was talking to the other guy, but yeah that game was a kick in the nuts. Most of the yards we gave up in every other game were after we were already kicking the dog **** out of teams...

ETA...hard to beat anyone with 5 turnovers...which our offense gave up.

Thanks man. Seems like a madhouse compared to our best board (orangepower.com), but that is because it has loose affiliation with OSU, they keep it clean. Of course compared to tigerdroppings, I'm sure your board seems like kindergarden. I've always been an MSU fan due to family ties... I hope this game goes through...it is in my backyard.

As is mine... I live about 1 mile from Reliant Stadium.

Over a year ago there was similar talk of a MSU - UNC matchup in Charlotte to kick off the 2012 season (as in this would be taking place next week in lieu of JSU). We said no thank you. I'm not sure if ESPN was behind it, but I doubt we went and found it on our own.

That was the game just after the plane crash

So the team, coaches, and school were in a bit of a funk, naturally.

I'm down for it. It would be a good booze trip and Reliant Stadium is nice. I went to a game there a couple of years ago. As far as OK State goes... They don't want it.
