One way Mullen can keep from losing recruits

Squash all rumors about leaving for another school right off the bat. Mullen's biggest "weakness" as Mississippi State coach, is that he's so good everyone assumes he'll be leaving at the first off he gets. The past two recruiting seasons fizzled for State because he wouldn't squash rumors that he was leaving for Florida in 2010, or Miami in 2011.

If he would just give us one year of worry-free recruiting, he would probably pull in a Top Ten class.</p>

I think other schools, particularly OM, played the "they are about to go on probation for trying to buy Cam Newton" card. They had easy circumstantial evidence to point to as well - Diaz and Hud leaving were portrayed as rats jumping from a sinking ship. A reasonable person could clearly see that Diaz was taking an opportunity only an insane man would turn down and Hud was getting a nice promotion and a chance to head up a sizable program. However, to a impressionable 17 year old that falls in love with the recruiter that strokes his ego last, I could easily see this having an impact.

Besides, there's nothing Mullen could say or do to ease people's minds about him leaving. It will all be discounted as coach speak. As long as we keep winning, that uncertainty will always be there. It's a necessary evil and I'm happy we must deal with it.

1. Recruits thought that Mullen is about to be hired away.
2. Key assistants leaving was a big indicator of #1 even if false.

of course this does NOT explain why the same recruits would choose a school that is about to lose their headcoach in less than a year if he doesnt win 6 games and one against his rival on the road.

If you commit to a rising team only to abandon rising team to sign with a team that is 2-4 vs. Vanderbilt since 2005, then I would suspect somebody from the rising team's camp has read you the riot act.


Of course, about 1/2 of the posters here would prefer Mullen lie to the deadbeats & headcases in order to cook the recruiting rankings in MSU's favor.

Well, if we managed to get some good linemen, that'll make up for the lack of glamour of our signing class. If you remember the best of the Sherrill years, we won without an all-star QB, very few serviceable receivers, and some good but not great running backs, because we had lines that would punch you in the mouth and make you suffer.
