Only 6 home games?

Perhaps Germans, but I was looking over all of the SEC teams' schedules for next season, and every SEC team but us has 7 or 8 home games, to our 6. Only exception is LSU, who plays multiple BCS teams in the OOC games, including a neutral site game vs Oregon.

Can we really not do better than that?

Byrne couldn't do anything about it. Down the road we have a season where we have 9 games in the state of Mississippi or Memphis, TN

As an SEC school that should never happen, and with Stricklin as our new AD, that most likely will never happen again. By the way, has anyone heard any rumors as to who we are getting for our 4th nonconference opponent in 2012? We've got USA, La Tech, and Jackson St. on the billing already. Jackson St. is already our non Div 1 opponent, so that means we have to get another Div 1 team. Anyone heard who it might be?

To answer mstatefan88, the 4th non-conference game in 2012 is supposed to be at Troy.

But the website I was looking at didn't have them listed on there, so I got confused. Maybe because we haven't scheduled an exact date for the game yet. I use fbschedules.com, and they have USA, La Tech, and Jackson St. listed as opponents with weeks already scheduled for the games, but didn't have Troy. Was wondering if maybe we hit a snag with them or if we just hadn't been able to iron out the details of the game week yet.

Future schedules should be:

2011 - LA Tech, UT Martin, at UAB, at Memphis (thanks Larry)
2012 - LA Tech, S. Alabama, Jackson St., at Troy
2013 - Bowling Green, Troy, MS Valley, at UAB
2014 - UAB, USM, I-AA, at S. Alabama
2015 - Troy, LA Tech, I-AA, at USM
2016 - S. Alabama, Tulane, I-AA, at LA Tech

This is from an article Veazey wrote a year or two ago.

It's the nature of the beast right now in scheduling and what lower tier teams are charging for just a "home" game....... But playing @Memphis does not bother me because it is close to Starkville and we will have more fans than they will there. Same can be said about @UAB. But playing @Memphis, @Tulane and maybe @Houston and @UAB is not that terrible in my opinion.<div>
</div><div>Now playing @LaTech and @Troy..... HUGE problem with that. </div>

It's possible the Troy series has changed (it's been over a year since Veazey wrote that article), but I remember Byrne specifically making the point that we put very high buyouts into those contracts to keep other schools from pulling out like Tulane did a few years ago.

La Tech almost every year is a little boring, no? Whether we are booking "guaranteed wins" or not, we could throw some different teams in the mix. Unless the money is just that much more with playing LA Tech, then I completely understand.

As long as we have 7 home games per year, I really don't care who we're playing or where. The simple fact is, it's easier to get 7 home games by doing 2-for-1 deals with mid-majors, so I'm fine with that. With the price of buy games being jacked up to $1M and even more, 2-for-1s are just going to be a fact of life. Unless we want to go back to the Templeton way and have only 6 home games.</p>

the 1-AA opponents for way in the future, MS Valley in 2013,and Troy. It even shows La Tech in 2017. Has all the same things that you mentioned for 2014 through2016. Just something I noticed that I was wondering about. Maybe we did hit a snag because I would feel certain by now we would have tried to have everything set, especially since the season after 2012 are pretty much set it stone.

Troy is a quality opponent for a non BCS school. Would hate for them to go off the schedule because they usually have pretty decent teams, and since I live in Auburn, that would be a very easy game for me to get to.

Any website that isn't done by the school itselfhas a very real possibility of having incorrect information, especially when it comes to athletic events and how often those things change. Iwould assume we may have heard something by now ifit had fallen through or hits some bumps in the road since the game is scheduled forthe very near future.Hopefully that's not thecase. Again, they are a pretty decent opponent.

Schools like Texas, Alabama, LSU ect: are willing to pay millions to have one home game with these schools. Unless State starts to put out that kind of money for a one game stand or a two home game stand with one of these mid major schools we have to do the one and one. </p>

Stricklin is planning on keeping long-range home-and-home series with all four of those schools

The main reason is recruiting. You want to be able to play games in New Orleans, Memphis, Mobile and Birmingham ... all good recruiting areas

Plus, you want your road games to be close drives for the fans

The 2011 schedule has been tinkered with a lot ... it is much better than it was originally

Supposedly one of the hold-ups before Dan agreed to come here as head coach was some altering ofthe schedule ... the origianl 2011 schedule had five of the first six on the road, or something really odd like that

The Southern Miss games are in 2014 and 2015, by the way

Those are just great road trips for our fans. Lots of fans in the Memphis area and a great place to visit. (I know, I just opened the door for wisecracks but be serious- Memphis is a lot of fun.) <div>
</div><div>NOLA needs no further explanation. Games in places like Memphis and NOLA bring fans even though the opponents are less than ideal. </div>

Hate that we go to Troy... That game really puts int he same position that we were in a few years back playing at La Tech. Granted we'll field a better team and we'll have better coaches than we did when we went to La Tech in 08', but at the same time Troy will be a tough, physical game...We'll have to win a ugly 23-14 game. Just don't think its in our best interest to go on the road to a place like that to have a slobber knocker.

I cringe just thinking about that La Tech game in 08'. Watched it in the Grove. Nearly pulled the trigger that day

With this in mind, I wouldn't mind North Texas being a future home and home opponent. We seem to be recruiting the Dallas area much harder than usual this year.

have a lot of ill will toward both LT & Baylor ... LT for negotiating such a low 'buy out' in the contract with Baylor ... and Baylor for not honoring the contract and making thereturn trip to Starkville.

You know to reserve me a ticket. Looking forward to Troy in a couple of years!

But aside from God apparently wanting me to visit every Sun Belt school at least once, I would certainly prefer SMU. They have a really nice new stadium.

I suggested UNT over SMU because it would be a much easier win. June Jones has done an excellent job at SMU so far. With their location and resources, the could be a top 25 caliber team in a few years.

If a nice new stadium is your preference, UNT will open their brand new stadium this fall.

LT's departure waslikely very much mourned amoung other ADs around the country. Dealing with a bufoon like LT had to make their job easier.

I remember Byrne saying that LT's fingerprints would be on the schedule for many years. LT is around in other ways. MSU is theonly SECschool that doesn't stay at the hotel that borders theVandy campus. Westay at the Opryland Hotel, about 30 minutes away. Why? Because LT signed a long term deal with the Opryland Hotel because theygave LT sweetheart dealsfor the LT family. Whata doofus.
