and has everything to do with outrageous prices.

Eventually, they were going to reach a ceiling on this deal. I think they've hit it and blown through it.

instead of the laws of economics. Once enough people say, "enough is enough", they'll have to decrease fees.

Why would the teams ignore the tax bills sent to them?

The ticket prices have indeed gotten ridiculous for most people, but there are some other things that dissuade me

If you've been to a NFL, NBA or even college football/basketball recently then you've probably had the same "crap - another 17ing TV timeout!" feeling I get at almost all live sporting events these days. It take like 5 minutes between a touchdown and the next 1st down play in a football game. The number of play stoppages is just insane and I don't have the patience for it anymore. Bill Simmons had a valid comment in his latest diary about the world basketball championships about how the lack of TV timeouts really allowed the game to have a flow and how much more enjoyable that was.

At NBA games I also hate the nonstop music. I don't want to listen to techno music and watch basketball at the same time. Let the players play and let the fans make the noise. If you want music to go with it, use your ipod.

Beyond the ticket prices, I just hate getting nickled and dimed everywhere at pro events. Parking, concessions, etc. Everything is just bloated.

So when you weigh all of that versus sitting on your couch and getting HD with multiple angle replays and stuff and the ability to change channels during commercials then it becomes an easy decision for me. Getting tickets to rival the TV view would bankrupt me.

Ticket prices and the overhead required to acquire the the tickets has replaced grass roots customers with corporate customers and rich people. American business has downsized and so are their perks (tickets).

To say that the TV product is too good is just ludicrous. Aside from the insanely expensive NFL Sunday Ticket (whose sales must be down based on DirecTV's desperate attempt to give it to me for free...in exchange for upgrading my year-round programming package), the NFL is barely different now than it was 30 years ago. Each market sees 2 early afternoon games and one late afternoon game. The only addition in the last 30+ years is one game being shown on Sunday night.

The NFL has throttled its own product in ways that would make most businesses go bankrupt. Their customers want to see more games. Their customers want to follow their own favorite teams instead of the teams that some exec says you're going to be a fan of. With the exception of the crazy expensive NFL Sunday Ticket, the NFL has yet to offer their own customers what they desperately want.

Team comes into city. Says "we need taxpayers to buy us a new stadium or else we'll go elsewhere." Taxpayers agree. Teams charge a lot for tickets and residents have to pay higher taxes to fund the stadium. A few decades go by and teams say "buy us another stadium since this one is out of style." Taxpayers say no way. Teams move to an up and coming market since most of the revenue will be from TV and merchandise. Citizens of the new market feel special for getting a pro sports team and are willing to buy a new stadium to get them there. The cycle repeats.

If I really want, I can buy a year of the satellite or cable sports package for the price it takes for me and my family to go to a single NFL game.

Cowherd said one of the reasons is because of what you can watch at home. Bo also made that point this morning in reference to "man-rooms".

but hasn't Sunday Ticket been around for a while? And the games that come with regular cable haven't added any games.

Is the lag in ticket sales tracking the popularity growth of Sunday Ticket?

It just seems obvious that it costs too damn much regardless of whether its on tv.

Isn't college football attendance pretty high despite most every game being on tv?

paying a ridiculous amount to sit too low and couldn't see worth a ****. What I couldn't believe though were the season ticket holders around me who "appeared" to be homeless. Maybe they just spent all of their money on those tickets. </p>

towards the end of the show. This was a theory of mine of why college is being able to sustain. Although, there was an article where it showed only 5 SEC schools stayed the same or gained in season tickets this year with State being one of them.
With college, most of your fans are college grads that have a decent income. With the NFL, a lot of your fans are blue collar that sit in the upper deck and are basically blowing their budget to buy them in the first place. So with the economy the way it is, I think NFL hurts worse than college.

about the tv product now versus 5-10 years ago (from those that back the theory that tv is the driving force)

you want to be able to get stats and **** right then. I love the NFL Redzone channel. I get quick updates. The live stat tracker on my laptop.

Cowherd had some company on his show last week talking about how you can pay $200 for a handlheld TV that will show all NFL games at the stadium.

concessions are ridiculous as well. Disneyland probably has better prices on some things.

I hate to say it but I think fantasy football is a player in this as well because keeping up with any other sporting event sucks at a game.

At home
you can just jump on your computer or use your phone to get fantasy scores
you watch the game on the tv with your DVR (so you can rewind and watch plays you might want to review)
you can sit comfortably in your chair and in air conditioning/heating
you can drink a beer that cost you a dollar maybe and a large bag of chips priced at 2 bucks

At the stadium
you never get highlights, just scores from around the league and you can forget using your phone to connect to wifi or 3G/etc because 50,000 other people are trying to connect the same way. You do get see awesome product races on the jumbotron (the crawfish race at state games last year is an example)
you watch the game in maybe decent seats and probably have to use binoculars occasionally. they don't show replays on the jumbotron every play either.
you sit in a bucket seat that was designed for someone who weighs 135 lbs and it's probably either too hot or too cold outside
you have to stand in line to get beer or food and it will cost you 7 dollars for a beer and a small bag of chips priced at 2 bucks

whether I am at a game or not- cut the commercials out completely. The TV people can still have sponsors- like Snickers or whoever could sponsor the first five minutes of the first quarter or whatever. Put their logo by the little clock and score thing on the corner of the screen.

That's a very simple way to keep the game moving- and the flow of the game.

would be my response to them.

I enjoy going. I enjoy saying that "I was there". I can always get Tivo and watch the game again at my convenience.

I think that they may take going to sporting events for granted.

that most of these season ticket holders that are not corporations have been paying high dollar and are extremely passionate. I just can't see a big screen and high def changing that. It hasn't changed that for anyone I know on the college level.

How much would a pair of season tickets run, plus the other expenses (parking, concessions, etc)? I'm guessing at least $1500 - $2000?

I think people are tired of paying what amounts to at least2-5% of their annual income to buy NFL season tickets.... all while watching players & executives make millions $$. Salaries in all pro sports are ridiculous and we're the ones paying for it. I mean, there are NBA players out therethat 99% of Americans have never heard of but they are still making multi-million $ salaries. And after what's gone on with wall street the last few years, there is much more anger against anyone who makes outrageous salaries.

I personally decided about 5-6 years ago that I would no longer attend any pro sporting events just because the prices had gotten so high. Haven't been to anything "pro" since 2004. I'm sure a few years in the future I'll take my children to a handful of pro games just so they can experience it, but certainly nothing on a regular basis.

Going to a live game is flat out a hell of a lot of effort these days.

Whether you want to ***** about ticket prices, lines at concessions, parking, traffic to and from the game, having to sneak alcohol into stadiums, deal with kids, etc, etc, etc... the list goes on and on. The fact of the matter is that if I'm going to have to go through all this, I'm only going to do it for a team that I live and die for and unfortunately for me, MSU is the only team like that for me. Don't get me wrong, I love NFL ball, basketball, and a lot of other sports, but it's not going to ruin my weekend when the Titans of Grizzlies lose a game. Simply put, I'm just not going to kill myself going to one of their games like I would an MSU game.

anyone who'd rather watch their stattracker at home than go to a live game might as well be playing World of Warcraft.<div>
</div><div>I think most of it is just the hassle. Our lives are made so easy now that when something takes a little effort, we think it's such a pain.</div><div>
</div><div>With that said, I don't think I ever enjoyed the timing of a State game as much as this weekend. Got to go to the game, miss a day and a half of work, AND catch the whole weekend of football on the big screen. Made me wish we played every home game on a Thursday.</div>
