I'm getting an update for my birthday and have narrowed it down to those two. I hear battery life is a concern for both, but hear of a lot of the HTC's crashing or freezing up. Any advice or user-reports are more than welcome.

I saw it on the upgrade list but didn't think much of it. Will compare it to the HTC since the blackberry is pretty much out of the running now.

1) Go with an Android OS and don't look back.

2) Get one with a fast processor so its not sluggish like my HTC Hero.

background all day. The GPS apps tend to draw it down fast. I only remember a couple days in the 8 months I've had it where I was getting low on battery at the end of the day and I plug it in every night anyway. I don't use any of those "look at me I'm having a latte @ Starbucks" kind of apps so if you tend to, can't help you there.

I'm not sure about the iPhone 4, but I can tell you with confidence that the Galaxy puts iPhone 3 to shame. I use it all the time for all kinds of tasks and I'm still learning new stuff everday.(had mine for about 3 months)

There really is not much difference between the two. My sister has the iPhone. At Christmas, she played around with my Galaxy S for a while and said it felt like her's. You really can't go wrong with either phone. The difference between the two is negligible.

Right now it looks like I'm stuck at the Wildfire level, but I do realize that the Desire would be a huge step up, so the possibilities for upgrading are possible.

And tcreb, I'm definitely giving the Galaxy S a whirl at the store tomorrow as well. Let you know what I decide.

put my iPhone down since I got it no way any other phone comes close to it. Greatest tech invention ever. If you love music (iTunes), internet (safari), random knowledge (google), movies (imdb, flixster), ease of use for texting n emails, pictures, videos, dude buy a 17ing iPhone and learn how to use it I promise you won't regret it.

....is the Blackberry-like ball. Despite having a touch screen, the ball is real nice to scroll through links on a web page, then press the ball to click on a link. Otherwise, hyperlinks are just too tiny to easily touch with the touch screen without accidentally pressing (clicking) the wrong link.

I got a Desire a few weeks ago, my wife has had an AT&T Captivate (AT&T's version of the Galaxy S) and I really don't see why it costs so much more. I've played with both and I am happy with the Desire for what I paid ($120 less than the Galaxy S).
You won't notice a difference in processor speed, and both have a ton of SD card space. Plus I just like the HTC setup better. Desire and Wildfire have the optical trackball thingy, although I really don't use it that much, but you may.

I also like that the Desire is somewhat smaller and narrower than the Galaxy S. For a woman carrying a phone in a purse, size really doesn't matter (haha), but for a dude carrying one in a pocket or on a belt clip, it DOES. Just my experience.

Wait for another sale though. I got my Desire for $79, and the HTC Wildfire was on sale for $29 when I got my Desire. The Galaxy S has been pegged at $200 since Christmas.

Basically the Galaxy S is the hot **** right now, but the Desire was the hot **** 6 months ago and is still a damn fine phone, for a lot less cheese (when they go back on sale) than the Galaxy S. I looked at a Wildfire, too, but it seems limited by memory space/processor speed. There are several apps I looked at that said they were incompatible with the Wildfire, for what that's worth.

If you love music (iTunes) - Android can sync with iTunes unsing the free double twist app
internet - Android browsers are just as good
random knowledge (google) - android is google so....
movies (imdb, flixster) - same stuff on android
ease of use
for texting n emails - the swype technology on android is freakin awesome
pictures - yup android has it
videos - same thing

dude buy a 17ing iPhone and
learn how to use it I promise you won't regret it.

Now that verizon has one I can see an argument but why would anyone get one from ATT knowing their calling service is going to be crap, 3G only exists in certain areas of MS.

There is no discernible difference in the iPhone and the Galaxy except that the iPhone is the cool product to have. People who haven't used both should leave the comparisons to people who have.

In a battle between Apple and Google I'm getting in bed with Google every day of the week.

as compared to Samsung's "TouchWiz", but what sets the Galaxy S apart from the crowd is the AMOLED display. It has very rich and vibrant colors. The average user probably doesn't care about this because they spend most of their time texting and emailing (white screen, black text). If you fit that description then roll with the Desire and save yourself some money.

For both the Ipad and Iphone, Apple keeps talking about how they have hundreds of thousands of apps, and the competition such as the android doesn't come close. I have no doubt that Apple truly has a greater amount, but I'm wondering if it's one of those deals where they basically have the same amount of truly useful apps and the rest is just fluff.

Few other things.

1. don't get the wildfire, it's an inferior phone all around. save up and get the desire if you can't afford the Galaxy. The only downside to the desire is that it has very little on phone memory. means you will run out of space for apps until you can get Android 2.2 installed. Then you can use the AppsToSD app and store more stuff on an SD card.

I wouldn't count on the Galaxy to come down in price. At best you might see another buy one get one free offer. The phone costs Cellular South over 600 to buy so they can't discount it much more than they do and still make a profit.

I don't see any new phones coming out from CS until maybe 3rd quarter. There are a lot of changes coming in the 3rd and 4th quarter from Cellular South.

the iPhone is a computer. Made by APPLE!! Your **** is made by GOOGLE!! Which fortune 100 company has made trillions cause they are the best in the world at making computers? Apple. Who is using a desktop or laptop computer made by Google? Nobody. The iPhone is a mini-computer that just so happens to make phone calls as well. I'm loyal to the things I love in this world though so I'll be pro iPhone till death probably.

Just wanted you to know that Chromium OS is on it's way.

And FYI - the Galaxy S is made by SAMSUNG and it uses software developed by Google.

and they are pretty much the same damn thing. The operating systems are almost identical. Each one has a few extras the other doesn't have. The Netflix app on the iPad is bad ***. You can stream movies directly to it as long as you have a subscription and a wifi connection. The Evo is open ended and customization is endless. Being able to shoot videos in HD then connect the phone with a hdmi cable to my flat screen is awesome. Having both is a win win, but if I had to choose the Google operating system is my favorite simply because of ease of use.

For instance, in my maturity, i busted my phone up pretty bad. Think destroyed, but it still worked. You could look at the phone from a side profile view and it was crooked/bent/u-shaped. Screen was cracked to hell and back. Still worked. Obviously it was a little troublesome to use but did work. Took it back to cell south. They gave me a brand new phone and only charged me $50. Said they could repair the old one. I didn't have insurance or any other special coverage.

I personally think the phone is better than an I-phone. Never owned an i-phone but have used one on multiple occasions.

Get a device running GOOGLE android OS on LG, HTC, SAMSUNG, MOTOROLA, NOKIA, SONY hardware and get ready to deal with software crashes, and warranty replacements with refurbished phones.

Or..

Get a device running APPLE iOS on APPLE hardware. It just works because APPLE designed it's own OS to work on it's own hardware.

Apple doesn't cut corners when building iPhones and iPads because they've cut out the middle man.

Remember, Apple started all of this madness with smartphones running apps and such. Google and the hardware makers are all playing catch up.

Better stay tight in ATT's comfort zone or you have no service. Phone's great, service with ATT sucks.

I live in a bigger city so I don't have issues with service. If I lived in Mississippi I would probably get frustrated with AT&T but since I don't it's a non-issue for me.

Any good MSU or just sports apps in general to be on the lookout for? I can't wait to learn enough to be able to use it at it's optimum potential. Thanks for the advice guys

The iPhone may have more apps, but so many of them are repetitive and many more are essentially useless. In the end, both are about equally helpful.

The GPS navigation app for the Galaxy S is especially nice. I was going through Birmingham once and wanted to find P. F. Chang's. Didn't have a clue where it was. I activated the GPS feature, said "P. F. Chang" into the mic and was given turn-by-turn directions to the restaurant. It even included the map and the lady's voice telling me where to turn. I'm pretty sure that comes with the iPhone as well. But I thought it was pretty cool.

big enough. I can sit in my den and have little to no service. Two intersections in town I have nothing. Hit a deep dip in a road, nothing again. It shouldn't be that lousy. In Mississippi, I just forward to a home phone because I basically have nothing. When my contract runs out in November, I'll be signing on with Cellular South. Will hate to give up my iPhone but it's not worth having if I can't use it.

As far as the MSU apps, I'm sorry but I can't help you. Go to the Market and search on "Mississippi State" and see what you find.

your 3G receiver is shot. Try turning of your 3G under your settings. This should bring up the Edge network for you. Slower than 3G but still works. Your IPhone needs a "doctor" visit at an apple store. Mobile is way too big of a city for you to be having those issues. Your phone needs maintenance.

...the ipad3 will come out and make you feel obsolete again.

I haven't bought a computer in a 3-4 years and am amazed at the features/speed/low cost of the computers out there now. Of course, for net surfing and word processing, I haven't had a need for anything more powerful. It's not like I'm using an x386. My Macbook Air and 25" iMac work just fine. If I didn't have the Macbook Air, I probably would have bought the original ipad and feel just like you do now.
