Open dates?

2010 to 2012 there was only one open date. 2013 to 2014 two open dates. 2015 one open date.

What is the rationale?

14 week season as opposed to a 13 week because of how the opening week fell on the calendar.

It's dependent on

The number of saturdays between the Saturday before Labor day, and the saturday after Thanksgiving. Since both dates are moving targets this number of saturdays can change from year to year. If it's 14, like this year, then we get 2 byes to accommodate a 12 game schedule. When it's 13, we get 1 bye.

The easy way to work it out is if August 30 or 31 is on a Saturday, it's two bye weeks, otherwise it's one.

I wish they would revise the rule to just make the season 15 weeks regardless, counting back from the first Saturday in December.
