1. The pitching was about as good as I expected. Chris Stratton looked very sharp- he should be a starter. Ben pitched well, but you could tell that he was getting worn out at the end- and that's my big concern with him- his stamina. He has plenty of time to build up, but he looked more like a Sunday guy to me. His strikeout total will mislead some people- he's going to have to give us more than 4-5 innings if he wants to be the Friday night guy. Good to get Jonathan Holder's feet wet. He is going to be a good pitcher for us out of the bullpen over the next four years- he might even close one day, but I think he will probably be more of a set-up guy.

2. Slauter looks like Wes Thigpen with a better bat.

3. The infield is really young. Rea is a big target over there, and he saved Britton's tail all night other than a couple of plays. Speaking of Britton, he had a rough night. Certainly it's too soon to write him off and it was his first game ever and he probably had some nerves, but he rushed everything and none of his throws were accurate. If he wants to be our SS, he needs to get over those nerves now. With our bats, we can not afford to have a defensive liability in the field anywhere. Both of our runs were scored indirectly because of his fielding. Norris made a nice play on a bunt that kind of pleasantly surprised me, and Frazier looked good. To me, Frazier should be our SS. Yes, we would lose some range, but I'm willing to trade that for otherwise solid defense. We might have to see what Philip Casey can do or sigh, Sam Frost as a last resort at second with Frazier moving over to SS.

4. Our outfield is fast and athletic. Brent Brownlee's throw to gun their SS was a key play in the game. With our speed and range in the outfield and the fact that it is Dudy-Noble Field- that's a fly ball pitchers dream. I want to see Brandon Woodruff play some.

5. Trey Porter had a nice night. He's a walk-on only because his grades are really good and he saves us a scholarship. Had a 3.9 GPA. The ball sounds different off of Hunter Renfroe's bat- even when he fouls it off. He looked more confident and I think it's a matter of time before he puts it all together- it might not be this year though.

6. I saw Demarcus Henderson in street clothes before the game. I guess we're going to redshirt him? I saw Tanner Gaines dressed out, so maybe we're going to carry an extra pitcher.

7. Our hitting still worries me. We only had one extra base hit. If we face a power pitcher, we're going to have big time problems right now. My hope is that we simply improve as the season goes along- and I think we will. We did a pretty good job of hitting with two outs, and we did a good job as far as bunting. The fact that Adam Frazier is hitting third speaks volumes.

8. Washington State is a decent team. They definately have a few players that are draftr prospects. I'd say that they are about as good as Kentucky. The guy that they are pitching tommorow was undefeated in JUCO and is probably their ace. We should win at least two out of three, and if we win tommorow we have a better than average chance at sweeping them. We should get in their bullpen again because it's early in the year, so that should help us out a lot. I figure we'll see Routt, Pollo, and Reed tommorow because it is their ace and we don't need to take any chances, and then follow up with Evan Mitchell and Kendall Graveman on Sunday.

I was told he was cut last week or so.<div>
</div><div>And also, do you think they are bringing Stratton in relief to save his arm for SEC play? He has seemed to slow down in SEC the past two years, and I know at least his freshman year he had a dead arm late in the season. Or do they really just plan on him being long relief?</div>

Supposedly having some shoulder problems. Allegedly this all went down in the last 24 hours and he gave his roster spot to Tanner Gaines.

Also, I think Graveman is in long relief tomorrow, if needed. If Routt can get us 6, expect to see Graveman start on Sunday. Not sure why that is, as I expected Mitchell to definitely be in the rotation. That's just what I've heard.

He was right in front of me. His role would be if we need someone to pitch and have no one else available.

Stratton is auditioning for a starting role. They will probably do the same thing next weekend as well- or something similar with four games.

I didn't see Statz out there before the game, but I didn't think too much about it. I just assumed he would be charting pitches in the stands.

As you may know, I'm not as high on Evan as others are. But the starting jobs are up for grabs- Evan could still land one.

I don't think we should read too much into the rotation since they are piggy backing potential starters. We're just not used to having more than three guys that can legitimately start.

Edit to add: Statz also has some bad hip problems as well. I'm sure he is in a lot of pain when he pitches. That was why he totally changed his delivery.

The reason I ask is that Cohen was really hyping him pre season and he wasn't in the starting lineup.

but he hasn't yet been able to fully translate it to a game environment. He'll likely start against certain left-handed pitching matchups early on, until it starts to really come together for him.

This early, we're going to play a lot of guys in a lot of different
positions to try to get the best players on the field. Cohen has said
the only guys who definitely have a starting job right now are CT,
Brownlee, and Slaughter. He also mentioned Stark last week as a guy who
has, at least for now, won the 3rd OF job. But I'd be surprised if by
SEC play Renfroe isn't in the lineup everyday somewhere, whether he's at
C, OF, or DH. By SEC play I'd say our lineup will look something like
this: CT, Frazier, Renfroe, Stark, Brownlee, Rea, Norris, Slaughter, Britton. But that's all pretty fluid. We could see Henderson at 2B or SS and Britton on the bench. I also expect Porter to get some significant ABs during SEC play.

I only watched the first 3-4 innings, but the team seemed to play as expected. Very solid pitching and a bit shaky on the infield. The hitting surprised me a little, but only one extra base hit I think. Overall, I was impressed with the team given the inexperience of the position players. I don't think the starter or rotations on the pitching have any meaning at this point. They are evaluating all of the pitchers so all the potential starters will get a chance to throw this weekend, whether they start or relieve is probably irrelevant. I was impressed by Bracewell's command for the most part. I didn't get to see him in the 5th inning so not sure what happened or if it was just a combination of first game pitch count and tiring. I would expect him to only get stronger as the season gets started.

I think the simple fact he's so big makes him a big target, but he had a hard time with the tag last night. Several pick offs from the pitcher should have gotten the batter out and he seemed to have a hard time with the tag. His hitting obviously was pretty impressive. He's gonna be an asset in the power hitting department.<div>
</div><div>Also, I think our infield will be fine. We had troubles at the short stop position with Ogden last year (he had nearly half our team's total errors. I know your short stop fields a lot of balls, but I hope to see an improvement there). I'm hoping our 2 errors were just first game jitters, but those two errors cost us 2 runs. Overall, I liked what I saw last night. We are swinging the bat better and our pitchers seemed to be attacking the strike zone more.</div>

I see a bunch of complaining on Gene's board about the music between innings, which tells me that it was probably awesome.<div id="isChromeWebToolbarDiv" style="display:none"></div>

the music was great and the sound system is amazing! You can finally understand when the announcer is speaking or music that is playing. Also like the new video screen below the score board. Shows players name and pitch speed.

Had he been healthy last year, he would have started over Collins. He could stand to lose some weight for sure- that might help with his flexibility. He missed one tag because the runner was out by a mile and Rea just didn't know where the runner was.

He moves very well for someone his size, and he saved who knows how many errors from Britton. He had a tough game, but did pretty well I thought.

I definately agree with you about the defense at SS.

Porter will play some at first base as well I am sure.

Only thing I would change- don't play Sweet Georgia Brown when the opponent is taking infield. That's sacrilige.

The Family Guy spots were pretty random, but I didn't have a problem with them.

Columbus Orthopaedic got their moneys worth on ads.

Still hate the Chicken Dance.

I thought the atmosphere was good- MSU is doing their part on that. Our fans need to quit being so uptight. Like the Kiss Cam. Only one person kissed someone. Come on people! It's not like they are asking you to re-enact a porno scene. Just smooch and be done with it. It's OK. Really.

I agree no more of that
