Oregon just displayed the thing I hate about the gimmicky style of spread

If you don't have a play where you can get under center and knock the D Lineman's dicks in the dirt to get a half a yard, then you are over-thinking the game of football. Instead, they take a snap 6 yards behind the line of scrimmage and hand it off 7 yards behind the line only to get stuffed.

and kept the ball, he would have walked into the end zone...there is no 17 "gimmick" offense being run- just a different style of attack a defense

You're missing my point. I don't dislike the spread itself, but too many teams that run it are terrified to get under center. There should be no read to be made in that position... Just get under center and see if your guy can beat their guy... thats all that needs to be done

I agree with that. Even if you run a spread, you need to have the ability to get under center at times. Auburn this year with Franklin was a good example. I watched the end of the AU-MSU game. With how little your offense was doing, they should've been lining up in the I and pounding the ball until they had to punt. Instead, they took every snap from the shotgun, and tried to make the running game too fancy, which cost them a couple late turnovers.

I was actually surprised that they didn't line up in the shotgun to take a knee.

I'm a big advocate of spread attacks, but you've got to be able to do at least some basic sets in certain situations.

Those are 2 good offenses on the field. But I've been skeptical of Big 12 defenses all year.

Then I watched that Oregon QB pancake the OSU safety and run to the endzone. And I watched Oregon's 2nd string RB stiff arm a DB for 15 yards to get to the endzone. Lots of other missed tackles leading to big plays.

you're going to start to see teams start to add some "old school" type running plays with the spread. Because the fact of the matter is, there are times when you need to be able to run and pick up those short yardage plays.

I think eventually you'll start seeing teams in college doing like what the NFL is doing which is running some hybird- spread/WCO/pro-style type offense. Similar to what Boise State does now.
