I've been a long time Sthil guy and really like their products. My garage got cleaned out of all of my said products a while back so now I'm starting fresh. My last saw was a MS-290 Farm Boss and it was a beast for the money. I hated that it didn't have a decompression valve but other than that it was perfect. I use them for trail maintenance, disaster clean up and cutting firewood for my BBQ pit. Do you forestry boys have any experience with SOLO or Jonsered? Any others to look at? I'm under the impression that Husqvarna's quality has slipped now that it is sold at the box stores. Thanks.

in south missisippi. maybe one in 50 uses husky. the rest use stihl chainsaws and trim saws. in the 1980's, the kickback brakes on the huskys would break off and workman's comp insurance would not cover claims because a saw without a working chain brake was considered unsafe and improper. back then, the chain brake on the stihl was hinged on both sides and didn't break off. <div>
</div><div>i think stihl's dealer network is their main strength now, because both husky and stihl have single-hinged chain brakes and neither break very often.</div><div>

I have an electric I use to cut up dead tree limbs from time to time. It costs less than 1/2 whata gas model does, is easy to maintain, and does the job I need it for pretty well. I definitely wouldn't recommend it for anything other than light use, but if that's all you need an electric is fine.

about 8-10 years ago my McCollough died after about 12 years. By then McCollough had bit the dust after moving into the big box stores. Went to Lowe's, bought a Poulan and it was a total piece of crap, would not cut firewood that the old Mac would have cut easily. Took it back and this time there was a guy in the department who knew his stuff, took the saw back and told me that based on my use, lots of firewood plus trail clearing, go straight to my nearest Stihl dealer
and buy one of their lighter weight saws as that would be better for the clearing but still handle firewood. I took his advice and have been using the MS=250 since then, 18 inch bar, and it has been outstanding. Easy to get parts, easy to service and basically just runs. What the guy at Lowe's said is that anything they or HD carry is designed for the backyard clean-up and brush cutting, basically limbs and very small trees with occassional use. If you
plan to cut firewood get the Stihl.</p>
