He said it's good and he'll give me a bottle because he use to own a liquor store in Harlan County. He sold it but kept a lot of the bottles. He swears that Four Roses is so much better. I grabbed a bottle and 4R is quite good. Not quite Jack Single Barrel but to me better than Maker's Mark good.

Four Roses.... wow. Haven't heard that in a while. That was the cheapest liquor they had in Italy. I thought it was amazing then, but I was 18 and trying to get by as cheaply as possible.

Good to know.

I usually just get Maker's 46. Bourbon is fun stuff.

Beam Devil's Cut is one of my favorite new bourbons that have hit the shelf. When it comes to bourbon, I dont care how much you spend on the bottle to make you feel good, ive tried it all. As long as its bite isnt too hard and has relative smoothness, I judge bourbon by the hangover when Ive drank a considerable amount. The hangover is in direct correlation with the impurities or distilation process. Are there super ultra premium bourbons for 150+ a bottle that are better? Absolutely. But the difference in quality in a $25-$50 bourbon is minimal. Trust your taste buds and how you feel the next morning and dont trust what self appointed "the more it cost the better it is" experts say. Marketers make a fortune of you fools

The Woodpile was an old house on the highway to West Point. Drive up and a man would come out of the woods to sell you cheap booze. The house burned, but the guy would still come around the ashes to make his sales. That was about our only option. Tasted like ****, but it was alcohol.

I have been reading this site for years but this is first topic that compelled me to respond. Was told by someone at a local liquor store that pappy van winkle went out business and they sold their remaining barrels which is now bottled as jefferson's presidential select. Had a glass and it was very good but it cost too much to be my regular bourbon. Woodford reserve is my regular bourbon that I have keep stocked. It's hard to sleep at night if I don't have a bottle in the house.

Pappy Van Winkle is owned by the Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery, who doesn't actually own or operate a distillery. Instead, it is distilled and bottled by Buffalo Trace. Jefferson's Presidential Select is distilled by Stitzel-Weller, who for a time long ago also produced Pappy Van Winkle.<div>

</div><div>
</div><div>PVW is pretty good but a lot of bourbon enthusiast don't consider it a "true" bourbon since its aged for much longer than most bourbons (15, 20, and 23 years as opposed to 6 years for something like Devil's Cut).</div><div>
</div><div>Woodford Reserve is a really good one and probably the best value in bourbon. My whiskey-with-a-splash-of-water drinking wife really enjoys Booker's, which is a cask-strength bourbon made by Jim Beam and bottled straight from the barrel.</div>

But it is quite good. Pappy 20 is generally considered the best bourbon for the money.

In MS the 20 yr. isnot easyto find but it is around at the right time of year. You better know someone to find the 23 unless you are lucky as hell. Right behind that is Blantons in my experience and it is half the price of the 20 yr. pappy. I will say that jim beam is ***, but that new devil's cut is pretty damn good.

Go with Elmer T. Lee. Elmer is the creator of Blanton's.

I agree. Now I've only had 5-6 different bourbons, but Old Charter 10 is my favorite. I like Makers in Diet Coke - not so much on the rocks. Smooth taste that I can enjoy on the rock is how I rate my bourbon.

Old Charter 10 makes for a great Manhattan, BTW... 1 part sweet vermouth, 2 or 3 Old Charter 10 (or a rye whiskey), dash of bitters

I need to try some 46. And some Woodford.

My buddy that is a liquor snob says I haven't lived until I've had Pappy. Need to try that too.
