I put an Amazon order in around 0930 this morning, it was delivered by 3:45 this afternoon. I'm in Flowood. Within 10 years, I expect there'll be a lot more empty Walmart and Target buildings.

The overnight delivery is odd because I have used it probably 20 times and not once did I actually need the product that quickly. If they only gave my next day by 5, I would have still bought everything I bought. Heck, I woukd have been OK with 2 day for it all.

If I genuinely need something that quickly, I will just buy it in a store.
But when it's the default shipping option so whatever, I guess.

With the warehouse in Ridgeland and they have their own delivery trucks, if it is at that warehouse and you order it early enough you could get it that day.

I drove through Mississippi today and the state has hatched at least a dozen more Dollar Generals since the last time I was here. They will hurt Walmart with Target too for those items needed quickly.

The instant gratification of the American people is why so many things are in a mess today. For example college sports
There’s definitely an instant gratification for some things but it’s also time saving in some ways too. When it comes to very specific items it’s really hard to beat Walmart+ or Amazon.

Right. I mean, I’m rarely ordering new TVs or golf clubs.

It’s typically more along the lines of shampoo or coffee filters that I forgot to put on the Sunday shopping list, and when my options are either loading up the kids and locking the house up to drive 10 minutes to the store or else have Walmart+ deliver it in a couple hours to my doorstep, the delivery service is really handy

I’ll give an example. One of our Honda small engines that we use to pump water out of tanks needed to have one of the fuel lines and a couple of other components replaced. To get everything I would have to call around and then probably drive to two or three different places or even have on of those stores have to order it…..or I get on Amazon and find everything in one spot and have the next day.

Inlet valve crapped out on a washing machine that was less than a year old. Went through the whole warranty song and dance with Lowes. Guys came out, confirmed that was it, said it would take a week or two to get it in. Wife wasn't exactly thrilled we couldn't wash clothes for two weeks.

So....

Found it for $30 on Amazon, got delivered 5:00 that afternoon, and with the help of one YouTube video we were washing clothes while drinking beer and grilling burgers with the neighbors. Got a new bucket of 3 dozen baseballs and some new ping pong balls in the same order.

I ordered some bicycle wall mounts for my garage back in May. I placed the order at 2:26 PM and it was delivered at 5:11 PM. That's 2:45 on the dot. The Amazon warehouse is a solid 45 minute drive in afternoon traffic.

Capitalism is pretty awesome.

I've had overnight pop up as an option a few times, but they've yet to actually follow through. It's always delayed to later in the day or the next day.

Maybe this will make USPS, ups and fedex step up their games.

The problem is the people who whine when they aren’t instantly gratified.

Making things more efficient and quicker isn’t inherently bad.

Not having patience is.

Out watering plants at 0600 this AM, i saw my neighbor getting a delivery and talked to the driver. She said drivers start lining up around the Amazon Facility around 0400 to start deliveries.

It's a great job opportunity for folks who have reliable, inexpensive, good MPG cars (Hondas and Toyotas).

Likely. Fair warning: if you aren't careful, they will bring you something between 5AM and 8AM. That is fine unless you have a dog that will go crazy and wake you up barking at 5AM...

I'm not going to complain about having more time. Delivery, pickup, and scan and go have made shopping much more convenient. I even eat slightly healthier now because it's easy for me to pop in and grab fresh fruits or vegetables because I don't have to worry about a long line. Sams used to be a nightmare because the times convenient for us to go had ridiculous lines. Basically took an hour minimum and now I can be out in and out in 15-20 minutes even for a big order if I know what I'm getting and know where it is in the store.

I'm jealous of people that had all this when they had young kids. Being able to pick up groceries while your kids nap in the car or have them delivered if they're already napping at home would have given us probably half a day of free time a week. Not that we spent that much time in the stores, but trying to coordinate everything pretty much always ended up wrecking half of a weekend afternoon or morning.

I’m just posting to say how impressed I am with people who can do something foreign to them by watching a YT video. I get like 25 seconds into one and am like “this is taking too long”

Amazes me the number of random how to's that are out there when I take a shot at searching. Chain jumped off my chain saw the other day that I've used 3 times in 5 years. Couldn't quite understand why I couldn't get it back on and a little worried I was doing it right. Took a shot there might be a YT and be darned if there wasn't some guy working on my exact model. Getting the GD bottom rack out of my oven (sure enough there was a trick to it), bins out of the fridge without snapping something off, on and on.
Don't do a lot of complicated stuff but bet I could find YT'ber to show me if I wanted to try. Certainly beats digging out the manuals if you can even find them.

I try to find a good YT video for every car repair that I do. In the old days, I would use Haynes manuals but I don't need them anymore. There's almost always someone that has a step-by-step video.

Honestly, it’s impressive that society has become this convenient. However, I don’t like the potential results of less and less human interaction for society and increased instant gratification.

Just wait until Tesla bots get advanced enough to be used in society. They will make them into the image of an attractive woman and then sex bots will become mainstream. Talk about future population collapse. It sounds stupid but it’s going to be a problem one day.

Just curious as to why?

We have always benefited by adapting and getting more efficient.
I don’t think a lot fewer Targets or Walmarts is necessarily a bad thing. But I don’t think the buildings sitting empty is particularly good.

Running a shipping store, I see this in a magnitude that I do not like. It's plain dumb what people are ordering for delivery, especially same day when they know they won't be picking it up from their mailbox in the next 2 weeks.
