2005- Illinois just had one loss on the season heading into the tournament. They were ranked #1.
1996- Kentucky was #1 before they loss to Miss. State in the SEC final. Marcus Camby and company were #1 at UMass at the start of the tournament.

Yep. I just checked again. Only one of those 3 schools was ranked #1 in the AP right before the NCAA Tournament. Where did you look by the way?

Yup. There's been quite a few favorites by the general consensus that won the whole thing - top overall seed, but not AP #1. So in that regard I suppose this is kind of a sneaky question.

Yeah, I suppose this question has dragged on a bit too much. There's only 3 options left, so I suppose there's not much mystery left.

The missing #1 AP team to win the title was UCLA in 1995. They had 6 NBA players on that roster: Ed O'Bannon, Tyus Edney, George Zidek, Charles O'Bannon, Toby Bailey, and JR Henderson. Most of the guys flamed out after 2-3 years in the league. UCLA beat Duke on February 26th and they were bumped up to #1 the very next day... and they kept that #1 ranking the rest of the season.

hart got the first half of the previous question correct - so I suppose it's hart's turn.

Fun fact: O'Bannon's freshman year in 1992, UCLA actually had 9 guys that would go on to play in the NBA. Pretty sure that ties the record with the 96 Kentucky team.

Danged hart how in the heck do you expect someone to answer that without cheating. I'm gonna look but disqualify myself. I can't stand the stress of this question. Gotta go take a nerve pill. I can't even remember runner-ups unless they were Duke victims. LOL. OFC

Ok for those who havent looked this one up, I will throw out some hints:

First lets scrap the city and arena...This final four was played in the Omni in Atlanta. The NON ACC TEAM FROM NORTH CAROLINA was beaten by a play at the buzzer on semi-final Saturday....Although they lost, one of their players went on to play with the Boston Celtics....Name the school....

UNC Charlotte lost to Marquette on Jerome Whitehead's layup at the buzzer. Marquette beat Wake Forest in the Elite Eight and beat UNC in the title game.

Al McGuire owned NC that year.

Lee Rose was UNC-C's coach and Cornbread Maxwell and Lew Massey their best players.

Doug IIRC hailed from Texas. He possessed great leaping ability and was very athletic....Speaking of the Coach K era, he's coached a number of Naismith Award winners, symbolic of mens college hoops best player...Dawkins, Ferry, Laettner and Redick to name a few...

During a stretch from 1999 to 2002, the Devils had almost a stranglehold on the award with 3 winners in 4 years!!....Can you name them,
Year and Player respectively??

Correct Jim! Only Kenyon Martin (Cincinnati) in 2000 prevented a 4 year Blue Devil hardware sweep! Your turn sir!

I'm going with UK for basketball but for some reason I'm thinking that Duke beat Tenn. one year in the mid 70's when the Volunteers were ranked # 1 in football. OFC

Kentucky is another good guess and another incorrect guess.

Duke football beat No. 1 Pitt 7-0 in 1938. That was the Iron Dukes team.

UCLA was indeed ranked number one when Duke beat them twice in December, 1965.

But that wasn't the first time Duke beat a No. 1

Last hint. The team Duke beat was led by one of the best basketball players ever. A true great.
