Kenny is 1 of the 2. He played in the 1988 Final Four for the Arizona Wildcats, and the 1995 World Series with the Cleveland Indians. He missed the 97 WS because the Indians traded him to Atlanta. Crazy to think the Braves basically let Dave Justice go for free because Kenny was back in Cleveland in less than a year.

Whoever gets the second guy will get credit for the question. I'll give a few hints later on if you all need it.

Good guess, but it wasn't Tony Clark. He was at Arizona during the 91 season, but they didn't make it to the FF. Not sure if he played in a WS or not.

hah you're right - I forgot Lofton was on the 02 Giants. And yes, the connection truly is remarkable. Kenny Lofton and this other athlete both attended the same high school. What are the odds of that happening?

Guys please forgive me but I've just got to ask a question. :)

Q: What was different about Adam Lane Jr's 2 yard TD than any other known 2 yard TD in college football history?

I knew for sure Stoddard but had forgotten about Lofton until I saw the answer from sgrooms. Let sgrooms ask the next one since he got Lofton right first. Stoddard actualIy has a W.S. championship ring and a NCAA championship ring which could have been a good trivia question in itself. do have a good one lined up but my turn will come. OFC

A final word on Stoddard. He was, at best, the third best player on his Washington High School team, in East Chicago, Indiana. Junior Bridgeman was an All-America at Louisville and Pete Trgovich started for UCLA's 1975 title team, Wooden's last.

In other words that team produced three players who started in the Final Four for three different schools.

I have no idea if that has ever been duplicated. But not very often, I suspect, if ever.

Yep, could have gone with Stoddard by himself - winning an NCAA title with NC State in basketball and a WS ring with the Baltimore Orioles. I thought it was mostly cool how Lofton and Stoddard wen to the same high school, albeit quite a few years apart.

I'm gonna go ahead and ask the next question. A former Yankee catcher was also a starting QB for a division 1 college football team. Name the catcher and the college where he was the starting qb. OFC

Don't know school, but just a hunch...

Jake Gibbs is right and he was also the bridge from Elston Howard to Thurman Munson. As for the school here's a hint. It's a Southeastern conference school. I also want to apologize to sgrooms. I didn't see his question and didn't mean to blind side him. I have no idea what the answer to his question is. We will work out the next person to ask the question somehow. I was just thinking about how lucky we are to have two of the classiest head coaches in Coach K and Coach Cut. I think this board also has a lot of class. While we are sort of on the subject of college football did any of you eve get to watch Archie Manning play football at Ole Miss? OFC

Oh my . I remember Clarke and Kinney. What a dark time in Yankee history. Miss. St. is incorrect but I have left numerous hints in my above post that I edited. ;) OFC

I'm guessing it may have been South Carolina. DeVinzio was tough. South Carolina rouged him up a little. I'm not sure if it was John Roche or one of the other thugs. Randy Denton who was all man stepped in and evened things up a bit as I recall. You know Bobby Cremins played with that crew. Hard to believe huh. Carolina didn't take any crap off the tar heels back then. As much as I despised the Carolina Gamecocks I despised unc more. OFC

Same here Sky...sat amongst some UNC fans at the tournament in '71 w/my dad openly pulling for USC...Drove em nuts and 'Cocks won too! Kevin Joyce outjumped Lee Dedmon for a big jump ball late and tipped ball to Tommy Owens for a lay-in....Great...Yeah we got roughed up by em...Not South Carolina...Not an ACC team...

I disliked those South Carolina teams more than I have disliked any athletic team before or since.

For the record.

For the record, part two, South Carolina was not the opponent when DeVenzio had his career high in points.

Always pulled for Cocks EVEN THEN against UNC....Thanks Jim, and I did note it was "not USC, not an ACC team" in my follow-up....

You did. But people seem to have gotten distracted by a tangent and forgotten the original question.
No worries buddy, thx for clarifying...One more hint I vividly recall from watching the game on tv...Prior to OVERTIME in this game DeVenzio nearly capped it off at the buzzer! He almost connected off the in bounds pass...I will never forget Jim Thacker exclaiming "He almost made it from 80 feet!"

DeVenzio actually did make an 80-footer to win a game at the buzzer. It was a freshman game against UNC.

It looks like this is on life support. Any objections to my giving the answer and asking a new question?

Jim allow me sir to give another hint. I'd like to give Sky and some others one more shot- In the 1968-69 season Dick DeVenzio scored his career high against a non-conference foe. The Blue Devils played this contest away from the friendly confines of what was known at the time as Duke Indoor Stadium...Hint: the opposing coach would later leave his position and his next stop:Head Coach at an ACC SCHOOL...

Name the opponent Devenzio careered on (Duke loss unfortunately), and the opposing head coach.....

DeVenzio scored 28 points in an overtime loss to Davidson in 1969, his sophomore season. Davidson was really good that year-Mike Maloy, Doug Cook, Jerry Kroll-They were ranked fifth in the AP poll at the time of this game and would lose to North Carolina in the Elite Eight, on a Charlie Scott buzzer-beater.

DeVenzio was a fascinating guy. Had there been a rivals.com in 1967, he would have been a top-5 recruit. He was a stud.

After Duke beat Carolina in 1969-Bubas' last home game--Dean Smith was asked when Duke won that game.

His answer? "When Duke signed Dick DeVenzio."

He averaged 12.2 ppg that season.

But Bubas left coaching and his replacement, Bucky Waters, didn't want DeVenzio to be a scorer. His scoring average dropped in half.

He could still shred a press and was a great playmaker. But, IMO, Waters held him back. Reined him in.

DeVenzio and Waters clashed in a lot of areas, on and off the court.

So, why didn't DeVenzio join the mass exodus out of town?

He was a very bright guy, a very bright student and really valued the Duke education.

So, he stuck it out.

DeVenzio was an English major and I was a history major, so our paths didn't cross often. But we did take a couple of classes together.

Duke is a small school and the athletes tended to major in social science, liberal arts, humanities types of classes. So, my classes overlapped with a lot of athletes. He was unique in his ability to seem like a regular student.

Part of that was physical. He was 5-10, 160 or so. When Randy Denton, for example, showed up, it was pretty evident that he was a basketball player.

Not so with DeVenzio. If a fellow student didn't know who he was, he/she would never have guessed that he was a Parade All-America basketball player. He was bright, inquisitive and never played the I'm special, look-at-me role, never hid in the back of the room.

He later became a vocal advocate for college athletes. He was one of the first people to start pushing the idea that college athletes were being short-changed by a system that enriched a lot of other entities but not the people who were doing the work and taking the risks.

Did I mention that he was academic All-ACC three times and academic All-America once?

Like, I said, a fascinating guy and the epitome of the Duke student-athlete.

Jim Sumner Thank You my friend-thoroughly enjoyed what you shared w/us about Double D, one of my all-time faves! (I remember the shot by Scott to beat Davidson in regionals after he led a furious rally to beat us earlier in the ACC Tourney in Charlotte).

During the 1969-70 basketball season in a game between two ACC teams a fight broke out. During the skirmish a player ended up hitting the head coach from the opposing team. Name the player and coach. Jim will probably get this one. OFC
