Not an expert by any means - I just made sure mine had a couple of rod holders built in (factory). Makes it nice when you are ready to paddle some distance to have your rods out of the way (even trolled some like that). At least a small water tight compartment for valuables (I also watertight bagged everything just in case - also for any condensation).

Depends on how serious you are but prices will range quite a bit depending on brand. I just do generally light rapids (class 3) and below so I haven't even put the skirt on any trips yet. Have regretted it a couple times early in the season when the water was still pretty chilly but no big deal.

Typical depth of preferred fishing location ?
Mainly lakes... ive been renting a few and playing around on canals of salt water. Im not brave enough to hit the ocean yet. Depth would very... I guess i want a hybrid? We have a lot of lakes, ocean and swamps to venture into. Im warming up to the Native watercraft Fx12

My suggestion to you is to watch a bunch of you tube kayak fishing vids. There are some fantastic ones and seeing what they use under actual working conditions should be most helpful.

Personally, I would want the toughest, most stable boat out there considering your life depends on it.

IM new to the sport... Any suggestions on kayaks?
does it have to be a kayak? I have a Wenonah and an Old Town Canoe and both are great for fishing. The Wenonah weighs 23lbs and very agile, fast. Super light and easy to transport. Easier to get in and out of as well. If you get a kayak get training on how to return out of the water if you tip over.

I'm a big fan of the Native kayaks. I think they have one of the most comfortable seats available and they build a quality yak. I bought two Slayer 12s a couple of years ago and they have held up very well. They aren't the cheapest kayak but I think they are well worth the money. I originally bought the Ultimate FX 12 but switched over to the Slayer 12. The Ultimate FX is very nice and you will stay drier than the Slayer but I think it could be difficult in rougher water, such as rivers or the ocean. I really like all of the compartments in the Slayer and find it easier to store my fishing gear. I did add a couple of flush mount rod holders to the Slayer as well. Both the Ultimate FX and Slayer are stable. I am not comfortable standing in either kayak but my son doesn't have any issues standing up to fish. We even added a 30 lb. thrust Minn Kota to my son's kayak that comes in handy when trying to cover a lot of ground.

Wellllll .... since you asked.
http://www.clcboats.com/shop/boats/...yaks/wood-duck-12-recreational-kayak-kit.html

I know you are probably not looking for a kit to build. But anyone who has any interest in kayaks, and light craft in general, owes it to their self to check out this website and you should especially ogle the galleries which feature pics of the different kits that have been built. Just some beautiful kayaks, canoes, etc.

Just bought a Perception Hook 10.5 from Dicks. Good seat, well made, rod holders (3), full length Anchortrolley, Anchor, good seat. Stable, good for lakes and slower rivers, maybe up to class 2-3. I've only been out once though due to crap weather. This is an entry level boat but of higher quality than many, I considered an Old Town Vapor angler, but the seat is better and the trolley system is better.
comparable boats though. Perception sold this as another model (which I cant remember the name of) but they are exactly like the Hook, which appears to be the label for Dicks. (Perception Sound 10.5) Same boat.

Since I lost my right arm in Desert Storm I'm limited to a foot propelled craft like the Native Slayer kayak.

It's a great boat....but the rare times I actually catch a fish I still have issues reeling it in.

What size did you end up getting? Does it cruise nice and straight?

While I did serve I wasn't injured during battle.

Poor form (and disrespectful) on my part.
