I'm getting ready to order a pretty large piece of machinery from China and have it shipped to New Orleans Port where I will pick it up. I'm concernered that there will be issues or some surpise BS fees when I try to get it. I've poured over Google trying to find a detailed list of fess and such, but I only find bits and pieces of info.

The manufacturer in China gave me a list of fees, including a document transfer fee, port surcharge fee, customs clearance fee, and duty fee. I then went to dudycalculator.com, and they listed a duty fee, merchandise processing fee, and tax. I also don't know about any required paperwork.

It all adds up fast, and I figured someone on the Pack was into import/exporting and could shed some light.

Need to get a freight forwarder/broker

Several good ones in New Orleans. Wish I could remember some but been a long time since I dealt with this.

also, not sure what you're importing but if you have the ability to do this it will save you a lot.

duty fees will be significantly less on a bunch of parts than a larger piece of equipment. we have exported a lot of equipment and some people will have the equipment dismantled into smaller pieces and shipped in containers and then reassembled in the new country and come out ahead. something worth looking into

I've had some exposure to it. I know you will need a customs broker, but I'm not sure how that is handled. The shipments I dealt with already had customs clearance before it ever arrived.

In regards to the port, you are generally invoiced for how many times they have to pick up and move the cargo. You are charged pickup from the ship to "place of rest," from "place of rest" to a specified carrier. The fees depend on the size and weight of the cargo and what type of equipment is needed to move the cargo (you are also charged for any special storage or handling the cargo requires). Wharfage fees are generally built in and I'm not sure how they work, but I think it's up to the port.

I hope this helps...

You are sweating the small stuff. The real hard part is when you get it home and you have to cut it up to get the heroin out.

First ,get a customs house broker which you will need, give him the documents, b/l and he wll handle the rest for you. There should be a list of them, as far as New Orleans, if there is one listed by Page and Jones CHB,I can personally vouch for. I did business with them many years in Mobile, and they probably have a branch in NOLA.

There are thousands of Freight Forwarders out there.

UPS, DHL, and FedEx all have Freight Forwarding arms. That's their whole purpose for existing, to arrange for your shipment, handle your customs brokerage, coordinate the movements, etc.

FedEx's is FedEx Trade Networks. I've never used forwarding myself, but if you give those people a call, they could probably give you a good estimate of the cost. They can give you as much or as little service as you need.

My company imports from China and other countries in large numbers of containers into New Orleans, Memphis, New York, etc. I would be glad to answer questions and help out if needed. PM me if you want.

Thanks for the info, guys. The company I am ordering from is handling everything that requires getting it to New Orleans Port. All I have to do is pick it up and pay fees. I don't guess I have to worry about getting it out of China and picking a shipping company.

Then, what I am I going to do with 8000 beltless rain coats?**

This was my first thought.. FedEx Trade Networks should be able to help you if need be.
