I have an old coin collection from my father I would like to have appraised by an expert.
Mostly silver nickels, dimes, quarters, half dollars and dollars from pre-1964.
Anyone have a trusted expert I could engage, and any advice is much appreciated. I’m in the Jackson, MS area. Thanks in advance.

Nickels minted in the United States between 1942 and 1945 contain 35% silver, making them the only silver-bearing nickels in American coinage history.

But it sounds like the rest of it would be 90% silver.

There are online resources to help you get an idea of value. My experience doing it when doing inventory they all sound really old and then when I see the valuation, it was apparent that I had nothing of real marketable value. I'd probably get all of them inventoried in a spreadsheet, or paper if you prefer, if for no other reason than you will want to know what all you turned over for appraisal, if you choose that route. It's not too hard to get a general idea here: https://www.ngccoin.com/price-guide/united-states/

There is a numismatist group that meets 1-2 times a month in the Jackson area….believe it’s over in Brandon.

I have the same....old old collection from dad, grand dad, and great grand dad........there is a group in Jackson, but also, and I'll try to remember to message you when I find it, there is a coin guy in New Orleans that is probably the regional authority, and he will speak with you to give you some notables to look for.....but what I found after speaking with him, I had some amazingly cool currency, but the chances of having something that would put my son through college and such are very slim.......I'll look for his contact and let you know

Unless you have something super rare or in perfect shape, the value is just within the silver content.

True for monetary value, and unless there's something rare, then it's mostly sentimental value, the fact that the coins are old, and that some are no longer made using the same materials.

I've got a very small collection, literally in an old Skippy peanut butter jar (one of the first samples that was sent free through the mail), that I've had since I was a child, some of which were handed down. There are several silver dollars, steel pennies from 1943, Indian head pennies, a few silver dimes and quarter, and such.

I have several Morgan and Peace silver dollars from the late 1800s/early 1900s.

And several old buffalo/indian head nickels, and some of them are so old the year has worn to a point you can barely read it, which probably means they have lost some of their value.

Yes coins are graded by wear
There are some good price guides out there

I live in Ridgeland and have been collecting for about 25 years. I don't know if Sim's Gold & Silver in Flowood is still in business and Bill's Coin in Jackson (if they are still open) is not recommended. Published or internet price guides can be of some use to you but you really need a fair among of numismatic knowledge to make a fair guess as to value. If you would like to meet, I would be glad to give you some of my insight about your coins. PM me if you want.
