My 4wd during winter is an absolute must. Last winter I started experiencing problems shifting back into 2wd from 4wd. The dash light will say that the truck is in 2wd, but when I attempt to turn, it is obvious that it's still in 4wd. Furthermore, if I put the truck in 4low, there is a loud "clunk" sound from what feels to be the transfer case.

Could this problem most likely be solved by simply changin the t-case fluid? Keep in mind that I am a dirtbag ski bum who doesn't have the $$ to let a mechanic "figure it out." Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated.

Resulting in transfer case having to be changed out in an late 90's F150. That is a pretty extensive job for a ski bum without a auto lift or air tools, I suspect. Plus if you have a garage and sockets/wrenches, that would be a very cold project this time of year. Looking at a fair bit of cash to get this handled I suspect.Might be time to evaluate the overall worth of your subaru, jeep, explorer.Does it make anyclunking as you are driving in forward or reverse, or it is just going in and out of High/Low? Good luck.

It could be oil residue build up or low oil level. Also, the selectorlinkage might be out of adjustment. I'd have the oil changed and see if that helps first

I had a 03 model Z71 and it did the same thing, It was a computer/electrical problem. Sometimes it worked fine sometimes it acted funny. You can try unhooking the battery and let it reset. The clunking when shifting into 4 low seems to be common on all trucks even my new one does it. If this isn't your problems try asking Culley on the Upton Tire Pros website, he answered a question I had within the same day. http://www.uptontirepros.com/ Click on the icon on the right hand side of the page.

the old style lock in hubs and yank a shifter into 4wd. I admit my lazy *** likes poking the button, but nothing is more positive than actually putting the shifter from 2 to 4

had the same problem with 85 F140 4wd. Transmission shop told me I had to replace the transfer case. Couldntafford that so I got to looking. Turns out, I had some Ms gumbo mud that had hardened to concrete binding up the linkage. Put the truck in the garden with the sprinkler under it running to wash it out. Run it for30 minutes or so to soften it up. Let it set for an hour or soand run it againto wash it out. That was 7 years ago and it still works fine. When putting it into low, are you putting the transmission into neutral? If not, you should be.

It's currently 2:46 am in Bangkok and I'm up dealing with stuff the board would rather not hear about. My flight back Stateside leaves in 5.5 hours. If all goes well ill be at the Egg Bowl in a little over a week.

To be honest though I only put it in low if I'm trying to somehow get the son of a ***** back to 2wd from 4hi. At first I thought it was te extreme cold causing it to
Freeze up, but I had the same problems this summer.

but there is no clunking, however. I have not found a consistent pattern yet, but it seems that if I shift the transmission to park or neutral when going between 4LO and 2WD that appears to fix it for me. But like I said, I have not used it enough to find this a consistent fix.
