I think that Utley/Tejada picture is an excellent example of the differences. Tejada is way off the bag, a step or two off of it. Odor is right on the bag. Even without the neighborhood rule, you only have to tag the bag. You don't have to stand on top of it. You can swipe the bag and move off of it. Odor didn't do that. Odor put himself in the danger. Bautista didn't go in cleats up, he didn't slide out of the base path. He just went hard into the bag and slide late, which kind of means that he gave Odor even more time to get out of the damn way. Had Odor stepped to the side and Bautista had chased him then I would be siding with Odor, but that didn't happen.

I disagree with this entirely. Bautista did slide late, but part of that might be because Odor was about to throw that baseball at his head. Bautista had to slide or get hit in the face with the throw to first. So, he slide late. Odor could have hit the bag and side stepped, like every other player does, but instead he stuck in there right at the base. Bautista didn't go out of his way to go after him and Odor forced him to slide late. I put little to no of the blame on Bautista. This coming from an entirely neutral fan of baseball.
Strange take.

You do realize they called interference on Bautista and gave them the double play. His slide violated almost every part of the rule as MLB said they were going to enforce this year. He slid late and was completely unable to stay on the bag as required.

I agree that Odor bears the brunt of the blame for the brawl but your take that Bautista is blameless is just flat out wrong, IMO.

thanks to the Main Board.

I do have to agree with the OP. Odor addled Bautista with that punch.

I watched it again from the home angle. The slide was later than it looks like from the first base angle. Pretty sure Bautista didn't hit the ground until he was on the base, so I will be like a politician and change my stance.

Yeah, I've seen your baseball posts before and always seemed very intelligent about the game. That was way late.

Was about to say something, but trublucatfan covered it for me right after your post. No matter how neutral of a fan you are. It was deliberate.

I'm a Cardinals fan so my bird wasn't in this fight. Been in many a bar fight and used to be a bouncer back in the day. Odor knocked the starch out of Bautista. Yeah, the other Ranger held him back...as a face saving gesture. I've seen guys hit harder than Bautista did that got enraged and it would take 5 or 6 determined guys to keep him from getting his hands on the guy that just slugged him. Dude was out on his feet.

You used to be a bouncer like willy used to be a congressman.

wow, you got a lotta hate going on...this guy slap your mother or something?
Hate? Or pointing out the obvious? I don't see how anyone could ever consider this as hate what a dbag you are frl. Someone said he didn't get knocked out, burning you look at the gif in this thread, he was clearly knocked out. He was dazed. Idc bout either team or either player I'm a Reds fan so I barely even care about baseball anymore like I once did. I don't see how I'm hating by saying he got knocked out. Bautista also said afterwards it'd take a bigger man to knock him to the ground. its funny because he was wearing a helmet and that punch connected in the only spot that could've done damage, and had beltre not grabbed him from behind he would've fallen over. Also he said it would take a bigger man to knock him down, that was only one punch. Had it not been broken up Bautista would've been hospitalized and deservedly so for that dirty late slide that the second baseman was expecting. A slide like that can cause a serious injury like what we saw in the playoffs last season. I don't see how it's considered hate at all. Someone tries to say he didn't get knocked out. I was just pointing out the obvious that he did in fact get ko'd. Hating? No not at all. But did I like that dirty slide that could've harmed someone's career and ultimately that person's ability to provide for his family? No there's no room for that in the game.

It was a dirty play by Bautista, and if you didn't notice Bautista was wearing a helmet, odor wasn't wearing a helmet and had a glove on one hand so he was basically fighting someone, that was wearing a helmet that's supposed to protect a baseball from hitting you in the head let alone a fist, with one hand tied behind his back. As soon as Bautista lifted a hand to swing at Odor he got rocked before he could even begin to swing at him. I respect the reason for Odor doing it, as a man you have to defend yourself, and I definitely give the man props for knocking someone out wearing a helmet. That takes professional boxing like precision to knock someone out like that, there's zero room for error because of the person moving and wearing a helmet. It was very impressive. And it was cold blooded to start and end the fight like that with one punch and obviously, Bautista got mixed up with the wrong one. Shouldn't have tried Odor like that. Do I hate Bautista though? Nothing I've said suggests that. Barely know a damn thing about the guy besides the fact people call him Joey Bats.

If this is directed towards me then i truly hope you noticed I didn't quote your post when posting that soooo what's your point? I in no way wanted or expected you to read it. Idk why you'd post something so irrelevant to begin with. I guess youre one of those 'hey look at me, I'm here, hey guys notice me?' kind of people that just want some sort of attention? I don't know and quite frankly it's not for me to figure out.
