OK, since it is open week, I thought I would try something new as I watch the Tide roll Sat. night. Any suggestions on new beers in MS to try? Also, does anybody know if you can buy Eggenberg pils in MS?

As always, it depends on what you like...

As far as the new beers in Mississippi are concerned, the ones I've had that I like enough to want to drink again are Orval, Rochefort, Lazy Magnolia's Timber Beast, & Abita's Vanilla Double Dog. I've yet to try any of the new Rogues or the Sierra Nevada Torpedo.

Don't make any plans if you are going to try the Double Dead Guy Ale, I think that was the name of it. I was not a big fan of it but wow did it put me down for the count. I like the Abita Jackamo and the Timberbeast is good as well.

You might want to try Keystone. Saw a bunch of South Alabama fans drinking it in the Junction last weekend. Must be the state beer of Alabama.

I'm looking forward to trying Timber Beast in Oxford sometime.

I'm not a huge fan of rye beers but anything hoppy is worth sampling. I haven't tried Lazy Magnolia's IPA yet either.

Second the Abita Vanilla Double Dog.
The only new ones I've tried that I didn't like were of the Widmer Brothers line. If you think too much cilantro ruins salsa, there's some kind of spice equivalent the Widmer Brothers pack into their product that does the same thing for me.

If you like hops, then, yes, Timber Beast is definitely recommended.

I've only had the Widmer Hefeweizen-- didn't like it at all. That's not just the brewer's fault though-- I can't stand Yazoo's Hefeweizen & and another done by... geez, can't remember... but it's gotten to the point where I don't want to try them out at all. Edit to add: But that's probably just me because I know people who love to drink wheat beer.

Timber Beast! I haven't seen Sierra Nevada Torpedo in stores yet, at least here in Meridian, but I do like it. Hopefully we'll get it soon, they keep telling us it's coming. Abita AndyGator and Vanilla Double Dog are both good. I have tried Mons Abbey Blonde and it is good too in my opinion. It's a Belgian style. I never hear much about it, but it goes off the shelves pretty quick.

Maybe the Double Dead Ale I had was old or something it just didn't taste right to me. It was strong an maybe I'm just not used to tasting the % that it packs. or maybe I'm just a ***** who knows

I don't like Mons. I live in a small town that doesn't have a ton of decent beer, but we do have Torpedo, and I like it a lot more than Timber Beast. I can drink a whole six pack of torpedo. Timber Beast is good for like one beer. It's just a little too much for me, but I will take a nice pint of it anyday.

if i had to go with a single beer, at the moment i'd say Abita Abbey Ale. pretty damn good and pretty much anyone will like it whether you're a IPA, amber or strawberry fan.

edited to add: it's not a strawberry beer. it's just easy to like. like boobies.

The Rogue XS Imperial Stout is excellent.

It is my favorite of all the ones I've tried, and it's crazy stout; 11.6% ABV I think.

I like the Abita SOS as well.

I'm not a fan of the Torpedo IPA by Sierra Nevada, or the Timberbeast.

If you're in Oxford, The Blind Pig has a great selection of draft beers and are rotating new stuff on the taps whenever the distributors can get them. The Rogue kegs have been very hard to get, but they've had the Double Dead Guy and the Imperial Stout a couple of times.

Sam Smith Oatmeal Stout is real good. I was shocked at how much I liked it. I normally don't care for coffee colored beers.

Not new, but Sam Smith nut brown ale, Sam Smith oatmeal stout. Not Guinness dark by any means. An EXCELLENT fall brew. Good stuff.

If you're looking for a stout you need to give Sam Adams Imperial Stout a try.

Old Rasputin made by North Coast...

It is a man amongst boys in the beer world. A Russian Imperial stout...

If you can get it in Miss., try Mother's Oktoberfest, Great Divide Wolfgang(doppelbock), or Deshutes Mirror Pond or Black Butte.Chimay or the Trappists will do the job too.

The Rogue I2PA is good, but I don't think it's $14 good. My recommendation is the Rogue John John Ale. It's a mellowed out Rouge Dead Guy.

I've been really enjoying Brick Mason from Red Brick. Aged in whiskey barrels, and you get a little of that flavor with every sip!

I hated the Brick Mason at first...

Kept sipping on it, embraced the whiskey flavor (and it is STRONG), and ended up loving it. It was just a big shock at first.

The Rouge Voodoo (Bacon Maple) was sort of the same. Smelled like breakfast, odd at first, but as you sipped and adjusted to the flavors it got seriously good.

Red Brick Double IPA is excellent also - if hoppy beers are your thing.

I may try the Brick Mason this evening.

Southern Blonde

I just tried Diamond Bears "Southern Blonde" it's a killer craft beer, nice name too!

I don't like Mons. I live in a small town that doesn't have a ton of decent beer, but we do have Torpedo, and I like it a lot more than Timber Beast. I can drink a whole six pack of torpedo. I've sort of strayed from being a hops chaser...

Used to love something that would draw the mouth up. And I still love a good hoppy beer, but a Terrapin Hopsecutioner or LM Timberbeast is where I stop these days.

Been getting interested in Tripels and Quads, though I don't know much about them. So if anyone has any suggestions, throw them my way. Had a Three Philosophers at a restaurant in B'ham and absolutely loved it.

Blue Moon pumpkin something r other is out. It's ok. Has a pumpkin pie spice aftertaste. Good holiday party beer I suppose. Like it, but it couldn't be a regular beer for me.

I honestly don't like any of those crafty beers. It's bud light and PBR for me. I don't know any people who even drink the **** y'all are talking about. It's like you get Internet cred for talking about ****** tasting beer and crappy hippy music. And I'm sure you 17ers will tell me I'm a dumb unsophisticated redneck for drinking the most popular beer on earth but last time I checked I didn't see people at tailgates drinking marry poppins strawberry nipple or whatever kind of beer you guys like.

You need a Duvel. Duvel is what Bud ought to be. Same style beer, just with a lot more flavor.

Haven't seen Duvel in MS yet.
