Seeing the 2Turnt post made me wonder, who was a good player for us that was just awful that we turned a blind eye to because they were good? We've certainly had some thugs over the years, some of whom turned it around and some of whom met tragic ends, but trying to think of who was just an embarrassing douche bag.

Most of the players I can think of got it pretty hard from state fans to begin with, but they also weren't that good. I feel like most of our QBs were pretty likeable? Dak obviously, Fitz I remember rumors about him rubbing teammates the wrong way early in his career but ended up seeming pretty good later on. Who is our Diego Pavia, Marshall Henderson type player that we have to ignore how terrible they are to enjoy watching them?

Hmm. Maybe Willie Gay? His career here seemed to be mostly games missed due to suspension and a bad temper. Good player though.

Players like Pavia are polarizing, the type that their own teams fans love them but everybody else thinks they are a real douche breath.

That said, Tommy Kelly while he was here was supposedly a real douche breath. Dontae Walker turned into a real douche breath after being pretty popular for the first 3 years

Wasn't there a Mississippi State punter from back in the early 90s who was known to be a predator on campus? I think I remember his name but I don't want to libel anyone.

There is a former punter from the late 90's that is not supposed to go within 200 feet of a school....or a Chuck-E-Cheese.

I mean… Quay Evans killed a guy.
I was really thinking more douchiness rather than thuggishness/criminal behavior. Unfortunately no SEC football or basketball program will have trouble naming former players that ended up in legal trouble or dead. Just off the top of my head, besides Quay, Marcus Bullard stayed in trouble, quinton culberson stayed in trouble, Justin Cox, Dontae Walker, there was the QB at MSU and Ole Miss that was charged with murder (Handy, maybe? only remember him because he came up recently on here) Nick turner got killed running with the wrong crowd; Derunya WIlson was murdered (not sure if that was him running in the wrong crowd or just being in a bad neighborhood). I'm sure there are a lot more.

Yeah I was thinking along the lines of Cam Newton, Johnny Football types. You hate the guy unless he plays for you. Bo Wallace. I can't remember having a guy like that. Someone said Will Clark, that's a good one, but I wasn't old to enough to see him play and actually remember.

Fred Smoot maybe?

I can't even think of a baseball player we've had, that maybe acted like that Notre Dame guy in 2021.

Smoot is the closest thing we have had to that in any sport over the past 35 years. There may have been someone like that before that, but my memory does not go back that far.

Personalities like that tend to pick Ole Miss over us. I can't imagine why that is****

We had plenty of douchbag baseball players when I was in school. Could have football players or basketball players show up at a party and have no concern about it. If baseball players showed up, you knew there was going to be a fight. They just weren't good enough and baseball not popular enough to be known.

I don't know that other fans hated smoot? I think they mostly thought he was funny and likeable, but maybe that's me just not remembering.

Did people hate Papelbon? Not sure he was good enough at State to draw a lot of attention, but I could see opposing fans disliking him and fans loving him.

Kodi Augustus? Not sure he was good enough for other fans to take notice.

I mean truth be known if we're talking douchebags that other fanbases hated, I mean candidate number one might be Danny Mullins.

I always thought of Smoot as being funny rather than just being a prick, but I also never had any direct contact with him. All the players I ever met seemed to be pretty decent.

Donte Walker? Didn't he turn out pretty bad?
Dontae got into several jams w/ the law and drugs after he walked out and quit on Senior day. He did some time, got out, and went back to school at Belhaven and graduated. I believe he went into social work trying to help folks not make the same mistakes he did. He died almost a year ago according to the obituary I just found, December 27 of '24. Super waste of talent......

It may be a hot take but I was never a Smoot fan, reminded me a lot of Neon Deion Sanders. But they say "if you can back it up it ain't bragging" and he could usually back it up.

I'd say Bart Hyche. Bart is a good guy but on the basketball court - he seemed to get under people's skin a little. And I don't think Bart was that bad.

Jeffrey Simmons should be mentioned, but he really just had the one incident and rebounded very well from then on out.

Almost the entire baseball team fit this description during my college days. But we were pretty dang good those years so it was easy to look past most of the time.

But, he was a very likable guy! I was at State during his years, and Thursday nights were always party nights…whether at Len Lews, or just random parties. He was always the center of attention, but never rude.

Now Eddie Hornback was a different story. He was the biggest name to come out of Mississippi during that time. Went to Notre Dame before coming to State. A real turd! Watched him be a jerk many times.
