I'm headed to Biloxi next week for work, and I haven't been down since before Katrina...Any suggestions for decent seafood and steaks? Anything that's not located in a casino? Thanks!

Half shell, Mary Mahoney's or chimney's (in gulfport). Try the Biloxi schooner for a po-boy at lunch.

If you want to stay in Biloxi and out of casinos, I think your only options are Jazeppi's (steaks) or Mary Mahoneys (Seafood). Half Shell is not as good on the whole, but it is cheaper, and it is good (not for steaks though). If you are willing to drive, somebody recommended Chimney's, which is good for steaks or seafood. The other direction is Phoenecia's in Ocean Springs, also good for steaks or seafood (have to bring your own alcohol). If you want something more laid back and inexpensive, Taranto's in Woolmarket is good for boiled or fried seafood. I think McElroy's is back open to, not sure how it is now.

If you want to have some type of bar scene afterward, I'd recommend Ocean Springs or downtown Gulfport. Lots of restaurant options at either place.

There are a few good places in the Pass and the Bay, but I would say they are not necessarily better than the ones already mentioned, and probably not worth the drive from Biloxi.

^^^^^^this guy^^^^^ knows the Coast. Absolutely flawless choices. And head over to the Beau after for some local microbrews. Of course, there will be smoke there...

I lived in Boston for a while and when two completely separate and different people who had lived in Boston their whole lives found out I was from Gulfport they went on and on about Mary Mahoney's.

Said it was a tradition to drive over for dinner whenever they were in NOLA. It really is that good. Bobby the owner is a cool guy too.

Go to Chimney's for brunch. Half Shell is a really good lunch spot.

I grew up on the Coast, and lived in Ocean Springs before Katrina. Your choices for food on the coast depends on what you want. I love going to Captain Al's, where they have excellent wood fire grilled steaks. Try the "Nicky Creel," which is a large ribeye served with your choice if great fried, grilled, or blackened shrimp. It will be a little out of the way, up Lorraine Road from U.S. 90. Yes, they have an attractive staff, starting with Stacey, who now owns it. She also makes great homemade key lime pie!

Trapani's on Beach Drive in downtown Bay St. Louis is a great seafood restaurant ala New Orleans style. The fresh trout with crawfish ettoufee is melt in your mouth.

Mary Mahoney's in Biloxi, within walking distance of most casino's is a family owned restaurant. I think Bobby Mahoney is about the 4th generation. Part of the restaurant is in Pre-Civil War ruins. Excellent sauces and great food.

The Half Shell has locations in both Biloxi and Gulfport. It is more the chain seafood restaurants, but has good fresh seafood.

McKelroy's is owned by my high school classmate, Mickey McKelroy. It is the traditional Southern Fried Seafood place. There are two locations, one just across the bridge in Ocean Springs and one at the Yacht Harbor in Biloxi, that I think just reopened.

The Mediterreo in Ocean Springs is superb, but you have to bring your own bottle.

Vrabel's in Gulfport is a good local place for the Gulfport people.

Another traditional fried saefood place is the White Cap located now on the beach in Gulfport.

Shaggy's is a "Margaritaville" style seafood restaurant and there are locations both on the water in Biloxi and Pass Christian.

What about Anthony's Under the Oaks in Ocean Springs? Used to be very good seafood and you could get a fantastic view of the sun setting over the back bay.

Also, for misc. I would add the Phoenecia in Ocean Springs. Excellent Greek / Middle Eastern restaurant.

Unfortunately, Mediterraneo closed a little while ago. But, I'd suggest Frenchies in downtown Ocean Springs. Its right across from the Mary C. O'Keefe Center. Frenchies used to be Porter Avenue Bistro and the food was excellent there.

It'll be a decent haul from Biloxi, but Darwell's is a cool place in downtown Longbeach. Everything on the menu is good. Most people rave about the crawfish etouffee. It's out of the way but worth it.

Hooters

It's on HWY 90. They have hot wings and fried dill pickles...and save room for the chocolate cake. It's reasonably priced. If I had to give it a formal description, I'd say it's delightfully tacky, yet unrefined.

I was actually talking about the food, although the last time I went none of the waitresses that looked good were there, but that was probably just bad luck on how the shift worked out.

I just don't get the love for the place. When I first started going there, it had a mediocre cut of steak that was seasoned and cooked right, good fried shrimp, and it was cheap. I was all about it. I didn't go for a while, and then the few times went, it was a flat out bad piece of steak, good shrimp, and while still relatively cheap, not cheap enough to balance out the quality of the food. It's not bad or anything, but I wouldn't peg it as one of the better options on the coast.

Well I usually go for lunch once a week or so. The ribeye sandwich is good. I haven't been at night in a while so the steaks may lack a little.

If you come down 49, I would suggest stopping at Donanelles just south of Hattiesburg on Hwy 49 for a good steak or tuna steak.

See below

Seafood:

Mary Mahoney's - Best Restaurant on the Coast and in the State - yes

Half Shell - Good food, on the water on 90- yes

Biloxi Boardwalk - Good Food, great view, on the water on Back Bay - never eaten there

McElroys - The Biloxi Restaurant is better, great breakfast - haven't eaten biloxi since reopened, but usually good

Red Sky Crab House - Downtown Gulfport, boiled and steamed seafood - same owners as half shell

I'd add phoenecia in OS - great fish and byob - also a great breakfast

I could keep going, but this should get you started.

Steaks:

Captain AL's - yes

Manhattan Grill in Ocean Springs - yes

Cheryl's Steakhouse in Ocean Springs - meh

I don't really do steak restaurants much, I prefer to cook my own.

Misc:

Zepplins Downtown Biloxi - Pizza is legit - you could also try Leo's or Toms in Ocean Springs

Ole Biloxi Fillin Station Downtown Biloxi - Good atmosphere, food is good. - great poboys for lunch

Schooner in biloxi has great poboys too. The Hookup in biloxi is new. Food is OK, but great atmosphere on water.

also breakfast i'd try tato nut in ocean springs, bayview gourmet in OS. McElroys in either town.

I know you said no casinos, but really the high end steak houses are in the casinos. 32 at the IP, BR Prime at the Beau, Ruths Chris at Hard Rock and now Mortons in Isle.

Also if you're here during the week, sometimes casino hotels are cheaper than holiday inn types.

Grew up on the coast and return twice a year. My favorites: Mary Mahoneys, Half Shell, Biloxi Schooner (no booze, across from cathedral, but great for lunch), McElroy's (agree the "new" one in the "old" location is better than the OS location). Don't know about your reluctance re the casinos but the restaurant on top of the IP is wonderful. It is named 32 (on 32nd floor).

Used to be 4 or 5 places. The one in Bay St. Louis was destroyed by Katrina. The one in Gulfport is still there, I think. They have excellent Shrimp PoBoys.

Try best poboys ever. I'd put it against Masperro's in NOLA for best in the world. I think it would be a wash.

If you want sushi - Chef Scott's

Chef Scott's in Ocean Springs is pretty tough to beat. The rolls are smaller, so you'll need to order more - but they are great. Plus, it's BYOB - I usually grab a bottle of saki that I've chilled to bring with me.

My favorite rolls: (1) Birthday Cake roll; and (2) Fall in Love roll. My wife always gets the Alaskan Volcano Roll. Also - they have the best fried calimari appetizer you will ever get anywhere. I always add to my order the Salmon Roe Nigori. It's great.

A few knocks against CS are - again - the size of the rolls, and the fact that a lot of stuff has spicy mayo.

Phoenicia in Ocean Springs has the best breakfast of anybody on the Coast. I like the Andouille Omelet. Also - when hungover, I've had them make me a BLT sandwich with an over-easy egg on top with mayonnaise. It cures what ails (ales).

Speaking of breakfast on the Coast - has anybody ever noticed how Waffle House always ends up with prime property locations? They're always right on the beach and right on a nice corner. They've got it together.

Need more info from you....

It seems people ask for this kind of stuff but you get so many different replies with too broad of choices.... everything from fine dining to a deli mentioned in this thread.

You want casual or more formal/fine?

What price range are you looking for?

You want seafood poyboys or a more formal entree?

I don't know how you would get anything useful form this thread as it stands right now...

I appreciate all of the suggestions...

I'm looking for casual and no more than $30 per person...I checked my reservation today and they're putting me up in South Beach Hotel...seems fairly decent.. Again, all of the suggestions sound great.

Glad you started this thread. I'll be back on the coast for the first time in a year around the middle of this month. I used to live in Biloxi and am planning to eat at a couple of my favorites and at least a couple new places.

For a quick take out lunch, Port O Call in D'Iberville is awesome (shrimp poboy and fries of course). We will be hitting them up after a morning of trout fishing I'm sure.

Biloxi Schooner is good

Half shell, Mary Mahoney's or chimney's (in gulfport). Try the Biloxi schooner for a po-boy at lunch.

They have the crab meat po-boy which is the only other place I ever had it. They used to have it at JJs saloon many moons ago and it was sooo goood.

I've stayed at the South Beach a few times, nice hotel. You'll be within walking distance of Shaggy's, just a stroll down the beach. I'll second either of the Half Shell places, Red Sky(same folks own it) is pretty good as well. Darwells in Long Beach is good. I'll give the Phonecia, in Ocean Springs, a thumbs up an both breakfast and dinner, I had the stuffed red fish and it was fine. Also in Ocean Springs is the Bayview Gourmet, good for brunch. Of course if you want to drop some serious change go to Mary Mahoneys, best place on the coast.
