If you know of any liquor stores in the metroplex that has EH Taylor in floor displays please help a brother out and share where they are.
It's still impossible to find in MS but I was in Chicago a couple weeks ago for work. I like to bourbon hunt when I travel, never know what you might stumble across... Anyway, I went to 13 different stores. Found EHT small batch in 12 out of 13 stores, between $60 and $80 with no purchase limits. Gotta be just a matter of time before that surplus makes it to more states.

Lincoln Road in Hattiesburg has EH Taylor. I'd check at The Spillway in Jackson but haven't been in there in awhile.

Forget chasing Buffalo Trace / Sazerac stuff. Eagle Rare, EH Taylor, Blantons, Weller, all of it is way way way overhyped.
A bottle of Buffalo Trace should not cost you more than $25-27 depending where you live. If your local store is hoarding it behind the counter and doling it out for $40 tell them to pound sand. All the major distillers are sitting on tons and tons of barrels that aren't moving as fast as they were the last few years. We're about to see a wave of products come flooding in that are normally impossible to find.

Right now EH Taylor small batch is sitting in floor displays all over Texas and Illinois. Eagle Rare is on every shelf in Georgia. Weller green and red are all over Ohio. These are test markets, trying to find what price point it becomes shelf stable.
Eagle Rare and Buffalo Trace are easy to find in coastal MS/New Orleans. Hell, I got a couple of normal priced bottles of Eagle Rare in an obscure island in the Bahamas a few months ago. I haven't seen Buffalo Trace priced over $25 in a long time. Honestly, for my preference, I think it's much better than most than are twice that price. I prefer wheated bourbon, but I honestly don't care for Weller. A friend of mine (early 2000s) used to keep boxes of Weller for mixers when he was in college. I wasn't big into bourbon then so I wasn't even aware of what it was.
Off topic, but there are some really neat Makers that I cannot ever find anywhere and would pay a little extra for to try - specifically the chocolate sundae

My experience is different. The Texas distilleries try to tell the story that "we get the same aging in 2-3 years that takes 6-8 years in Kentucky", but I've found it to just not be true. TX whiskeys just taste thin and flat compared to the longer aged products.
Stick to either Ironroot or Still Austin. Rest are trash.

I'm not a big Weller's fan but some of it's ok. I see Crittenden is shut down while a partnership is dissolved. Said sometime in October I think.
They usually aren't in production til October anyway.

So what is everyone favorite.
Ill say this mine used to be Michters bourbon, but now nothing can beat Benchmark FP for $30
Woodinville is still my favorite producer though.

My collection has grown way too much in the past 3 years. Helps when you dont have kids and a wife that likes the brown water as much as you. But the first love is still wine...thats a 500 bottle cellar.20241014_223545(1).jpg

Nice selection there. Mine looked similar to yours about 3 years ago, but I've whittled it down to just under 100 bottles these days.

Favorite bourbon producer will probably always be Wild Turkey & Russell's. Everything they make just aligns with my palate perfectly.

Favorite rye producer is Michter's. Their everyday $40 rye is excellent, and if you can find a 10 year Rye or Barrel Strength Rye they are out of this world good. I'll take a rye over a wheated bourbon 100 times out of 100. If I buy a Weller or a Pappy it's so I can either hook up a buddy that wants it or so I can trade it for something else. I've probably bought 6 Weller Antiques in the last year, and I haven't tasted a single one.

Favorite craft producer is either Dettling or Still Austin. Crittenden's is good whiskey but they're way in the weeds now with the finishes. I don't want wine finished or mizunara/amburana/whateverana crazy flavors overpowering it. Just give me a bourbon or rye neat in a glass and I'm happier than a pig in ****.

I would like to be invited over for some games this season. You'll hardly notice anything's missing for quite awhile........

Seriously though, that's a nice collection (and a great way to hide alcoholism, just buy so much good stuff you can't drink it all and people will just assume it's a hobby)

I laugh so hard when people say people with a collection like that are alcoholics...lol

If i had a drinking problem at all I wouldnt have 10% of that collection.

Its the opposite. Im in way too whiskey groups or have connections to them. Over half the bottles likely arent open as of yet and the others have been for a while. I typically dont drink alone as I dont enjoy it, and nor do my wife and I drink every night.

Lincoln Road in Hattiesburg has EH Taylor. I'd check at The Spillway in Jackson but haven't been in there in awhile.
Spillway doesn’t put any allocated whiskey on the shelf. They save it for their festival. They claim it is more fair. Their manager told me that if they put it out someone from out of town could buy it. Instead they have a one day festival which ensures that you have a ton of out town folks. The opposite of what they claim.

I've got a single bottle of EH Taylor Barrel Proof from 5 or 6 years ago.

It was just sitting on a top shelf of an obscure liquor store I used to pop in from time to time back then. I knew what it was so bought 4 bottles. Gave one to a hunting buddy. Drank 2 with friends. Doubt I'll pop the last bottle. It's delicious for sure, but I'm just getting too old to enjoy or think ultra high proof bourbons are enjoyable (or safe for my aging digestive tract) and I hate the idea of cutting it with too much water.

I was very much teasing. I hope that came through.

But I did have an acquaintance years ago who very obviously used his extensive and expensive wine room as a cover for a clear problem. He overcame it fortunately.

Bert Kreischer has a funny bit about people who say they love whiskey. You don’t love it, I love it because those bottles wouldn’t last long enough to be displayed in my house. My neighbor gave me some fancy bourbon in a box and it was finished within two days. Why? One day was stressful and the next day I cut the grass. This is mostly out of jest, that is a hell if a collection, don’t ever let me be your houseguest.

I've often wondered about the "bourbon collecting" guys. And I'm not poking fun but I prefer to drink my bourbon. I guess you're getting a deal or find something you can't readily get or completely understand an expensive one here and there. What drives the collection of bourbon? Just curious, I generally don't have more than about 20 bottles or so. I'm currently looking for an old piece of furniture to make a cabinet, but nothing like Scooba's got.

To steal a line from Brewzle. I have a selection rather than a collection. i enjoy having a variety and the differences and picking up different notes. Sure I have plenty of bottles that are not opened but I don’t have anything that I won’t open. Some people buy sports memorabilia, stamps, coins or whatever. I buy whiskey. I’m buying less than I did but probably quicker than drink it. And the hunt is part of the fun. I also share it. Whiskey is for drinking and sharing.

Yea I enjoy the notes, nose and palate. I can sit on my porch and just sip a glass or two and I'm good. I like to see what foods pair with it and how it changes the palate too. I'm working with a local bar to set up a flight night right now too. Excited about that!

I’ve drank bourbon for a long time but for years it was with ice and a splash of water. Then I had pour of ECBP neat and I tasted notes that I didn’t know existed in bourbon. That changed everything for better or worse. My palate is much better now than then. However I know that I don’t have a great palate. It’s funny how much it changes day to day. Some days I can pick out layers of flavors and some days I just taste whiskey.

In my experience, the days you just taste whiskey are the days when the first few sips simply hit the wrong places and scorched your taste buds for awhile.

There's a real reason it got the nickname firewater. It ain't wine tasting, that's for sure.

Maybe but I’m pretty acclimated to high proof and some higher proof doesn’t always taste as hot as some lower proofed stuff. I think it has a lot to do with what else that I have eaten that day. But I’m guessing because it really doesn’t seem to have any rhyme or reason. Additionally I usually have a warm up sip before anything too high

All depends on where you live. I can tell you that ER is somewhat easy to find where I live. Haven't see the 12 year ER yet. EHT is going to be $100 and not in the open. You'll have to "qualify" to purchase it.
I got a bottle of EH Taylor for $53 last week. It was sitting on an endcap “In the open”. There were six bottles before I bought mine.

If you like wheated bourbons, try Bardstown Origin Series Wheated. You should be able to find it. For $45 - $50 pretty easily. It’s fantastic!

Amburana comes across as Cinnamon Toast Crunch to me, which is fine (and can be great even) if its more subtle and not overpowering. When its overpowering it's too sweet for my liking.

Buffalo Trace is what Old Charter used to be. Just renamed it and increased the price $10 per bottle. Back in the day, the standard Charter was 8 yrs old and they also had bottled in bond plus i believe a 10 year. Then bourbon became popular...
