I need to maintain a website for a charity. They already have a site up and running. I need FREE software for editing html. Really basic stuff, but not so basic that I'd want notepad.exe to be my html developer.

What's FREE that's any good at all? Surely there is something. Download.com didn't show anything popular since 2005.

really hate to say it but notepad plus and wordpad plus are two of the best free html editors.<div>
</div><div>If you want something a little more robust and yet still easy to use it will probably cost you.</div><div>
</div><div>If you are familiar with IDEs and can find your way around the more complicated environments then something like eclipse would offer you a robust (and free) development env but is WAY overboard for a simple html editor.</div><div>
</div><div>Now that you arethroughly confused I will go back to notepad ++</div><div>http://download.cnet.com/Notepad/3000-2352_4-10327521.html</div><div>

that among other things does web development. We use Aptana Studio (http://www.aptana.com/products/studio2) which is really good and pretty easy to get used to. The best thing about it is the integrated FTP which allows you to either work on a copy and upload easily or you can actually work on your live published copy through a FTP connection. It also has Git integration if you are into open source coding or use GitHub.

If that doesn't strike your fancy here is a blog post that includes tons of different tools and information:

And you can get it through warez sites if you would want to go that route.<div>

I actually hand-code all my stuff on a Mac using TextMate. When I was working on PC, I used an app called HomeSite, which was eventually purchased by Macromedia and rolled into Dreamweaver.

Have you looked into a blog-type solution like Wordpress or something? Also, if the charity needs to reach folks, consider setting up a facebook page for them as well.

Jedit is my editor of choice, but most of my development is in C++. You'll want to add some additional plugins, but there are some for HTML editing. It's a highly customizable editor.

There are also some Content Management Systems (CMS) that you could try, if you don't want to do a lot of HTML development. I prefer Joomla, but there are plenty of others. A CMS can allow you to get a website up very quickly.
