NIL & the transfer portal reviving moribund programs.
That would be goodNext step.. let's lop the "student" off of "student-athlete"..
Deion who used the portal a lot but sending the right message.Next step.. let's lop the "student" off of "student-athlete"..
I think Rutgers football would be a lot further along without it. Rutgers only has the ability to help retain players not entice. They're not picking up great transfer portal guys because they simply can't afford them. It has only hindered Rutgers football's ability to climb the ladder. And in the end when it comes to college football, that's all I really care about is Rutgers football.Saw the headline this morning but haven’t had a chance to read it yet. I’ve said similar in the past when many here were complaining about portal and NIL. The expanded playoff will be another thing that helps. You’ll never have full parity in CFB but opportunity from the top on down has never been better.
Every transfer or retained player isn't solely based or based at all on NIL. Many here just assume that any time a transfer happens. Is it the case sometimes, for sure. But it's not the case all the time and fit/match and ability to make a player shine matters as well. Every player and situation is different. It's not a blanket this way or that way. A lot of NIL is also behind the curtain and I won't trust all the figures that get out there. There are big deals but not all of them are that.I think Rutgers football would be a lot further along without it. Rutgers only has the ability to help retain players not entice. Rutgers tried to get a RT in the portal and got outbid for everyone. Easier to get the hits when you have money to entice the better players in the portal. The misses come when you get what Rutgers gets because they can't entice the better players with money. It's going to work the exact same way for coaches now, NIL war chest will become a big deciding factor.Every transfer or retained player isn't solely based or based at all on NIL. In the games thread, I posted a nice story on Penix. He went to UW not because of NIL but because of DeBoer and wanting to reunite with the OC that made him successful at IU. The 3, pedestrian at the time, WRs in the portal were convinced to stay because of fit/match and demonstrating the ability to make them shine not NIL. Now after their offense has shined under DeBoer/Grubb, Penix and those guys are getting some nice NIL deals. They didn't go there or stay on board because of NIL but the fit/match worked well so now NIL deals have followed.
Penix wasn't even planning on coming back this year because of his injury prone career. He decided to come back because he thought he could shine even brighter and do better. He didn't even have NIL deals in place yet when he decided to come back. Adidas and some other deals of course came along.
Btw this doens't mean all transfers work. It's no different than recruiting. Some work out and some don't. It's up to the staff to get more hits than misses.
