OT: Come on, North Carolina...really, you can do better than this

While the UNC*** and Dook fans want everyone to think they are elite schools in an elite state, there is a lot of work to be done there.

Sure, every state has pockets of impoverished, but NC has the ignominy of having 3 of the 25 poorest cities in the US. Yes, this is a sweeping generalization, but I did find it interesting. FTR, there were no cities from KY or IN on the list. A couple each from WV and TN, however.

#25: Goldsboro, NC
#16: Burlington, NC
#10: Rocky Mount, NC

Other states with more than two include:

• GA (5)
• AR (4)
• TX (4)
• FL (3)

I have been to North Carolina many times to visit. Have a buddy who lives in Winston-Salem by Wake Forest. Very cool area. Charlotte and Raleigh are great as well. Haven't been anywhere else, but those places are very nice.

My opinion is that anyone waiting for a textile, mining or any depressed industry job to return, simply isn't interesting in working hard and/or have no ambition to be successful at any level. This goes for any race. At any time.

Key word is "cities." I grew up in the city that's #11 on that list (about 15 miles from where Malik Monk lived as a kid), and yet never saw the abject poverty that existed out in the unincorporated areas.

"Cities" is a key word. KY has lots of towns that are likely poorer than many on that list, but they simply don't have enough people to be classified as Cities. Goldsboro has 35-40K, and Burlington & Rocky Mount both have over 50K. Rocky Mount is the 15th largest city in NC, but would be 5th in KY, Goldsboro is 23rd in NC but would be 6th in KY. I'm quite sure my KY-hometown (Scottsville) would knock off many on that top 25 list, but has less than 5K so can't be called a "city".

NC has been hit hard by textiles moving overseas. Rural NC is a lot like rural KY, both were heavy tobacco states. And NC is quite rural outside of Charlotte, the Triangle, the Triad and Wilmington. I've spent my first 23 years in KY, and the past 21 years in NC.

The ACC and NCAA and NBA, etc are all so upset about a stupid law in NC that they want to pull their respective champtionship and playoff events out of the state. Too bad none of those entities care about some real issues, like poverty. Why not pull those events because the state isn't providing basic jobs for the poorest of the poor.

I'm an atheist. If I opened a business and refused to serve Christians based on my beliefs, would you be championing my rights or calling me a bigot? (Obviously I wouldn't do that because Christians spend money, so I'd be cutting off my nose to spite my face)

I just don't understand why we all can't just live and let live. I agree that there are more important issues, but I do think we ALL should have the exact same rights despite whatever god we do or do not choose to worship.

Private businesses should be able to discriminate against anyone they want and then face the consequences. People that disagree with the discrimination will stop supporting that business and it will fail.

I believe if you're a private business, you can do whatever you like and if you want to take a stance then the free market will decide your fate. If you don't like Christians, Muslims, fat people, Turks, whites, blacks, Asians, gays, etc then you shouldn't have to serve them if you don't want.

When you take that stance, people will take their business elsewhere so you're leaving money on the table. But I don't think anyone should be forced into a private contract/transaction if they don't want to.

Public is a whole other issue.

But I also don't think we should be turning the world upside down because a transgender person is mentally ill. They don't even make up .05 percent of the nation.

I'm not a religious guy, probably callme a believer in Diesm, but truthfully could care less if you had a business like that. Not my business how you run your business. The market will see if you're successful or not.
