Just got rejected for yet another IT position that I was qualified for. So, back to the warehouse until something else turns up. Feeling really bummed today and especially more so as I won't be able to see the game Sat. Just need some continued prayers. I love the field, but apparently the feelings aren't mutual.

And Im not trying to be a dick. It's not a commentary on religion. But if you are qualified either A) Someone interviewed better than you or B) Somebody could've known someone for a leg up or C) Someone was more qualified than you. You can't take that personally.

Regardless, if you have the skills, you have to be confident in them. You have to be tough like a Hollywood actor who gets rejected over and over, especially for entry level. The hardest interviews you will do will be the one's getting in the door. What did you learn from the previous interview? What could you have done better? Apply that.

And if you believe it and you have the talent and want it bad enough, you'll get hired.

As someone who has set in on a lot of interviews and hired a lot of people, I would advise you to look closely at yourself to try to determine what separates you from others, both good and bad. You can highlight your strengths and work on correcting your weaknesses. It is all about selling yourself.....nobody knows how talented you are unless you can tell them. The trick is to do it without being a know it all or tearing others down. You may be the absolute perfect person for the job but it means nothing if those interviewing you are not aware of the fact.

Man I'm sorry. I got so many acronyms in my knowlege base that I forget to explain most of the time. KSAs....Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities that they advertise is the job description. They use computers to filter the applicants so u want ur resume to match those. If your resume doesnt match according to the "computer", you never even get looked at on a list to the hiring authority. So match the KSAs with your wording and your resume actually gets read by human eyes for consideration! Good Luck!

It sucks, and I can empathize. I was a contractor so I was in many interviews. Remember you are also interviewing them. Make it known that you don't want to work there if you don't think it's a good fit.

Also, look at the office dynamics as you walk in. Everyone depressed? Have their heads down? Red flag. Also, I've outright refused to do a whiteboard test. The reason? That's not real life. It's not a normal thing everyday. If they expect you to excel at that, they're probably pricks to work for.

Last two interviews have been weird tbh. Lots of culture discussion but very little technical talk. Like, don’t you even want to see some of my skill set. The first interview I know I didn’t get it. The interviewer didn’t even show the first time. So I wasn’t upset by it. But man this second one things went really well. I had used several of their systems before. Seemed like we hit it off. Guess not.

I’ve got a couple more apps in this week and will do some more after my weekend slog.

What jobs/roles were you interviewing? If they are for some sort of support level, I actually think culture and soft skills are more important than technical ability. They might have been wanting to see how you'd work with other staff, if you can work together as a team etc.

I'm pretty sure my company is on a hiring freeze but they just haven't admitted it. I think a lot of places are.

Sadly, I see traditional IT work slowly but surely going away. You'll always need some form of support techs.. but the days of needing a high paying team of system engineers might be going away. So many things are SaaS now, and just don't require nearly as much highly technical skills. For example, I just got done migrating Exchabge 2016 to O365 over the last year (what a beast of a project..). I went from doing quite a bit of management of our on-prem exchange environment, to almost none at all in O365. There's no server to maintain anymore. No Dags, no Mailbox databases, no real need for Exchange Powershell. Almost all the work needed can be done by Helpdesk aside from some more advanced tasks like SPF management and mail connectors.

And that's happening all over. VMware and storage admins? Not really needed when you move to AWS or Azure. Managing 3rd party apps on servers? Not as much when all these companies offer a hosted solution. Any company's you see being created recently, there isn't as big of a need for traditional IT, sad to say. Cloud engineering is still very big and growing.

I personally am trying to shift away from true engineer work. I have a few contacts in fortune 500 companies, and their System Engineers are a little more sales/AM focused: providing solutions for a customer as opposed to installing a network switch. Pays a **** ton more and seems a bit more "future proof" to me. I wouldn't be on the hook to fix anything. That's the gig you want to get to. Upwards of $200k/year after a while and great benefits.

Yea DevOps with strong technical foundation in AWS / Azure would be the transition there from a technical career perspective.

I grabbed my Azure 900 cert, and might go for the 104. We already do a good deal of work in AWS with EC2s, role access, security groups, etc. But honestly, I want to get out of the technical side all together. The money just isnt as good as the sales/business side and IMO it's kind of a young man's game. Hard to keep up with learning once you have a family. I can't imagine being 50 and being told "ok X no longer applies, you need to learn Y, and you need to learn it yesterday". Most jobs don't cha ge nearly as much or as fast as IT, and that gets old after nearly 20 years of doing it.

I'll always be better at the soft-skill side of IT: presentation, communication, explaining IT, solutions, etc.. than learning the nuts and bolts of a system.

Hubby and I work in packaging and it S U C K S. The pay is awful, hardly anyone there speaks English, the management just stand around with their hands in their pockets observing others. If you have a 15 minute break, it's 1 minute to the break room, 13 minutes of break, and 1 minute back from the breakroom. It's the most brain-dead work I've ever done. Stick a part in a bag. Stick a part in a bag. Stress-free, for sure, but I have way too much time on my hands (between my ears) to be doing this ****.

I have two great books from Amazon, one for learning Attic Greek and the other for learning Latin. Never really took the time to look at either book (health issues). Greece is beautiful.

EDIT: I'd rather have stress, too, if I was making what I used to make, but it pays the bills. For someone with ADHD, anxiety, being a little on the spectrum, a problem solver by nature, I'm not sure how long I'll be doing this brain numbing work.
