Sticking with the OT threads that have dominated the week...the wife and I just booked a trip to CR. anyone here ever been? I had some sky miles so we fly into San Jose, but we rented a house in a town called Nosara.

Zip lining in the jungle seems to be the touristy thing to do, but I YouTubed it and I looks pretty 17'n sweet. Otherwise it's a lot of beach time.

Any suggestions, tips, anything to know?

My wife and I also just booked a trip to Costa Rica for this summer, so I'd welcome any suggestions in this thread as well.

Costa Rica rocks.

AndyMSU lives down there. You should get in touch with him.

Get a 4X4 for getting around. Lots of dirt roads.

Looks like you're going to be in between Samara and Tamarindo. If you want to be around tourists, go to those two towns. If you don't, stay where you are and just relax with the locals. I was down at Playa San Miguel, which is 30 miles south of Samara. My fiancee and I hung out on the beach, ate killer seafood and just relaxed while we were there. Didn't see one American during our stay.

Imperial is the beer of choice down there.

Rudimentary Spanish will be helpful for you. The Ticos are super friendly and very gracious people, especially if you make the effort to speak Spanish with them. However, don't mention the U.S. soccer team and snow.

If you're down there for a week or longer, you should head over to the Caribbean side and go whitewater rafting down the Pacuare River. We also stayed near the Volcan Arenal in the north central part of the country, which was cool, but the highlight was definitely being on the Pacific Coast.

Pura vida!

I didn't go, one of the biggest regrets of my life but I hear it is the best

men's golf trip destination in the world* and you might even get in a round or two.

I liked it, but I don't feel that it's anything special. But I'm not a big tropical type either.

As far as the beaches, know that they are public. Honestly, if beaching it is your preference, I'd go to Destin. I stayed at a resort, it was all nice I suppose, but I just feel like I could get the same thing vacationing in the U.S. Jungle stuff was cool, zip-lining, etc. I'd recommend paying extra for that. The TRUE Costa Rican food is awesome too.

If you enjoy fishing you will be right there at one of the best places in the world for Dorado, Roosters and Marlin.

I see what you're trying to do, and you're wrong, but in the end, you couldn't pay me to go to Hawaii either.

If that is your type of thing, more power to you. I was giving the guy my opinion.

I've been

down there. Stayed at a coffee plantation (Finca Rosa Blanca) and then a spa village outside of San Jose (Xandari Plantation).

Also stayed on both coasts. Recommend the Osa Peninsula (Lapa Rios EcoLodge) if you are looking to hike and like staying pretty primitive in the rain-forest. If you are looking for more of a beach location to relax, I really liked Flora Blanca.

Highlights include rainforest hikes, zip-line canopy tours, snorkeling pulled by boat and visit to Animal rescue house (Osa Wildlife Sanctuary Foundation, Inc)

We had a blast.

My preference is the Caribbean, especially St Johns, USVI. I got into it in the 90's when airfare was <$200 and if you went in the off-season (summer!) lodging was cheaper than Destin. Love the locals and the water, reefs and mountains are spectacular. You need to go in june or your risk getting into hurricane season. Unfortunately, prices have gone up so much that going every other year is simply not an option. I've been to Hawaii, but far prefer the laid back feel of the Caribbean. I could live the Jimmy Buffett life there. Well--if I had Buffett's money...

Costa Rica is awesome. And there is nothing wrong with doing the touristy stuff. Do the zip lines and go fishing one day. It is really an awesome country, outside of San Jose......that place is an absolute hell hole. And for anyone planning a trip there in the future, you should stay here:

It is absolutely awesome, and it is owned by a huge MSU fan.

We rode horses, zip lined, tubed down a river in the jungle and did volcanic mud baths all in one day. It was dark when we finished the mud baths, long day. The horses were not all that fun, but the rest was a blast! Zip line and tubing was very fun. On another day, we fished. Hooked up 3 marlin, landed one.

I have no real desire to return, but did enjoy the trip.

Agree, been to Hawaii three times,

Honolulu and Maui. I just prefer the laid back feel of the Caribbean and the distance is a factor too. I will say that Cabo is a great place, been there twice and want to go back.
