Big news in NASCAR today.. Dale Jr. retiring after this season. The sport is already struggling and this will be a big blow I feel. He's never been my favorite driver but I have always liked him and respected him.

He's a good guy and has had to deal with a lot of crap since his dad's death. OFC

No doubt NASCAR is struggling and this won't help. I used to be a huge fan but even my interest has declined in recent years. I still follow it and attend a few races a year though.

I talked to a guy that knows a lot of people in the racing business around Mooresville, NC, and he was told that there is a good chance it won't be around in a few years.

I used to love it as a kid and enjoyed going to Wilkesboro and Charlotte, but almost can't stand it now. Still makes me sad passing by the old wilkes speedway.

I'm not near the fan I was once and this news was very predictable. Only surprising thing is that it didn't occur earlier.

Jr has openly said he doesn't even like racing anymore.

I miss the way back days with Winding Wayne Andrews, James and John Sears, JD McDuffie, and Bobby Webb among many others.

He is my 4 year old sons favorite driver. He doesn't quite get the idea of retirement. Going to try and take him to a race in July.

I'm not a big racing fan but being from N.C. you gotta be dead not to know something about the sport. I watched his press conference today and I don't remember a classier announcement for retirement or anything else. Like I said he has been through a lot of crap since the death of his father in 2001 mostly from his step mother. She really screwed over Dale and his siblings. Junior's very well liked among his competitors and other fans. Very classy man. OFC

When NASCAR forgot where they started they screwed up. Fans would still be going to Rockingham and Wilkesboro. I've been to several races in the past but I would rather watch drag racing now.

I've been a Dale Jr fan since he started in the Busch Series. I knew it was going to come somewhat soon because I remember years ago that he said he'd probably retire in his early to mid 40's and he'll be 43 in October. He'll still be around racing to an extent because he owns Jr Motorsports.

I've met him a few times, he's a down to earth guy just like his dad, one of the few left in the sport. Racing has become way too political and commercialized, and I know people joke about it being rigged, but from multiple sources, it really is way more than people think.

So I don't follow NASCAR or racing at all, but I'd be curious to hear the family story.

There was a documentary about the Earnhardt family called "3". It gives a lot of history on them from Ralph Earnhardt (Dale Sr's dad) to Dale Sr to Dale Jr and his siblings. It was a really good documentary.

me too, I pass it every week on the way to and from the mountains.. It is probably beyond repair now. I covered a lot of races there back in time. Was a great place to watch a race.

As I said earlier on this thread I'm not a big fan but living in NASCAR country I can't help but have some knowledge of it and it's not professional wrestling on wheels. I've never watched a complete race but I tuned in today right before the race started and they were having the pre race prayer. Now I know that praying and believing in God are a choice but it is also a right and I being a Christian was pleased to see it. A young 14 year old lady sang the national anthem and she sang it the way I always heard it sang 30 years ago. None of the notes that were unrecognizable or stringing out the notes especially the word free but just the way it was written. The song was the focus and not the singer. Fighter jets made the pass over as the anthem ended. I didn't see everyone that was at the race but the ones I did see had their hands over their hearts and all hats were off. If anyone was kneeling or had their hats on I didn't see it. Another thing I saw that I thought was wonderful was that the families of the drivers were down with them during the prayer and the anthem and the cameras showed hugs, kisses and personal moments from the families and drivers. I do believe this is a sport and the drivers are athletes and many will question that and I guess you could call the fan base "red necks" but I have the most high respect for what I saw today. Boogity, boogity boogity. OFC

Sky's right. You grow up in NC you r gonna know about it. Lotta family watched it so did friends. Not sure where they kept going wrong.

Drove by the track in wilksboro a lot and it sits there lifeless and it's pretty sad but such is life I reckon.
