Taking the wife to Memphis tonight for supper. Taking recommendations. She is pushing Ruth Chris or Folks Folley. However, I am fairly cheap so wanting to see if these 2 are worth the price or if their are other options I should try to convince her of.

Never been to Folks Folley, but I've been several times to the Ruth Chris in Huntsville and it's very, very good. A bit pricey but there are more expensive places.

Since it's a "date", go ahead and spend the money, for the atmosphere as much as anything. And that seems to be where she wants to go.

Folks Folly, depending on what you get, can be a good bit more expensive than Ruth's and Ruth's is pretty expensive.

I haven't been to Folks Folly in some time so don't take just my word for it, but I've heard it's gone downhill as of late.

Ruth's is better

Eaten at both over the years. Disappointed last two trips to Folks Folly. Ruth's has been winner every time. Get shrimp bisque for sure and a steak, fillet or rib eye.

Folk's Folly is as good of a steak as you'll get anywhere. For a date, it's also nice because it has private rooms. However, plan on dropping $150-$200 easy.

Ruth's Chris is a tad cheaper and there's nothing at all wrong with it, but it's a 4-star to Folk's Folly's 5-star rating in my opinion.

I may be mistaken (pretty sure I have the right place though), but I've eaten several times at a J. Alexanders in Cool Springs (Nashville), and it's good but not in the same league as Ruth's. Don't think your wife would be happy there for a special date ... it's more of an every day place.

Not familiar with Fleming's

I don't like either one....

but I'm cheap as well...we always go to the Butcher Shop in Germantown/Cordova and it's a helluva lot cheaper than either of the two you mentioned and just as good. Although, it's not an mid/upscale restaurant either....

You are making a HUGE mistake if you go anywhere but Flemings. #1 out of the group including Ruth's & Folks Folly. Best thing at Folks Folly anymore is the French Onion soup and atmosphere. It hasn't gone "downhill" as much as the rumors say but Flemings would be a better spend of your dollars trust me. Ruth's is okay but Flemings is basically across the street (Poplar).

I will give you one more suggestion. If spending $100 bucks (not counting liquor) on you and the wife at Flemings sounds steep then believe me when I say that Amerigo has steaks (filet) that are surprisingly great. Plus date night atmosphere at Amerigo is very good. It's in the same vicinity as Ruth's and Flemings too.

Does it have to be a steak house in east memphis?

flexible in terms of menu or location?

If not, I'd go with folks folly since it's unique to Memphis. You can go to Ruth Chris or Flemmings in a bunch of cities.

Flemings gets my vote too if you are talking about somewhere else. Lobster tempura as an appetizer is incredible.

Seconding DesotoCountyDawg, if you aren't locked into the steak houses, there is no better place for a date night than Restaurant Iris. Your wife will thank you later.

Went to Ruth Chris. Cost me $150 but the food was great. My wife's first time ever going there so it gained me some brownie points. Maybe enough to get a little pickle tickle tonight. I need some after watching the basketball game today. Glad we have baseball to look forward to. Definitely will be trying Flemings and some of the other suggestions in the future. How can Memphis have so much better food than Tupelo?

Well, Memphis doesn't have Harvey's so it's not perfect...

Glad Ruth's worked out for you guys. Try Flemings and Amerigo in the future. Real good eats.

Really??? You're too cool for Ruth Chris'? And you really think it's in any shape form or fashion equivalent to Harvey's?

Glad you enjoyed it ... worth the price once in a while

Probably because Memphis is about 20 times the size of Tupelo (650K vs 35K) so there's a bigger demand.

I'm guessing the Harvey's comment was a joke because that's equivalent to saying Spaghettio's is better than Emril Lagasse's pasta.

I know most have already named most places.....

....but next time you are in town some places you could check out

Restaurant Iris(the best in town)
andrew michaels
hog and hominy
circa
jim's Place Grill
And I even like Elfo's out in Germantown a lot and personally I would stay away from Folks Folly. I know some people swear by it but I think that place is about as hit or miss as it can get
