My anniversary is next weekend and the wife and I plan to go out for a nice dinner. We're leaning towards the Red Sky Crabhouse. Has anyone eaten there? Other, better suggestions? The amount of $ is not a concern.

Thanks,
wooz

You can't go wrong with Mary Mahoney's. That said, I've never eaten at red sky.

32 on the top of IP, Mary Mahoney's, or Half Shell....

That being said, the new McElroy's has GREAT food and wonderful view of the sound - not as upscale as the others though.

Forgot about 32 - I've never eaten there, but have heard great things. I love MM's and usually try to take a client to lunch there every month or so, which allows me to get the Prime Rib. The bread pudding is off the hook, too. I also love the 1/2 shell, but we ate there last week. I think that Red Sky is owned by the owner of 1/2 shell, which is why we're thinking about it.

Thanks for the 32 tip, I'm going to look into it.

Half Shell is by far the best bang for the buck. If I had to give a hard recommendation, this would be it. Great food, great atmosphere, very reasonable price point.

Salute is also another solid option. The food there has always been good as has the service.

Red Sky is on par with Half Shell from what I remember. Have only eaten there once.

I walked into Lookout one night and bailed because I saw some mice running around while waiting the 15 minutes for the hostess to come and seat us.

If you're over near Bay St. Louis I would recommend Trapani's.

Hope this helps.

Thanks. I haven't eaten at Trapani's since before Katrina, but it was always great. Don't feel like driving over there from Gautier, though. Again, I love the Half Shell and you are right about the value. We ate there and went all out for our anniversary a couple years back (chargrilled oysters, steaks, salads, desserts, wine, etc.). My wife was really impressed and couldn't believe that we dropped less than $100.

Speaking of Bay St. Louis/Waveland - Las Palmas has reopened. If you like Cuban food it is really good. The masitas de puerco is fire and is the lunch special on Wednesdays, I believe.

Mahoney's or Jazzeppi's... Casinos - 32 at IP or BR Prime at Beau Rivage

You cannot go wrong with Mary Mahoney's... period. Jazzeppi's is also a hidden jem for Italian/Seafood.

Red Sky is okay. I are there right when it opened and I was not overly impressed. The steamed seafood had very little flavor.

There is a new steamer that has opened across from Island View in the old Vrazel's building. I have not eaten there.

All that being said if money is no matter 32 is far and away the best choice

For the value, Trapani's is awesome. 1 of my favorites and its stil great after reopening

Mary Mahoneys definitely. McElroys is good, but more of a gulf view, seafood, drink beer place. Ruth Chris is in the Hardrock and is always great(chain or not.) Almost went to MM last night for the wifes bd but stayed local in Picayune at Southern Char. it was good.

Have dined at 32 on top of the IP and Mahoney's on many occassions. Go with Mahoney's. The atmosphere and food are just simply better. Of course the view at the IP is better though.

Ruth Chris

Ruth Chris Steakhouse is the best possible place to eat on the coast. You cant go wrong with eating there (as long as your willing to drop a few hundred bucks). But if you goto Mahoneys instead, the bread pudding is the best in the state.

I'd pass on red sky.

It's perfectly fine, but nothing special. Half shell is good for the price, but Bacchus is about the same price and better. But if you're coming from gautier, I'd stop at Ocean Springs and do Phoenicia or Cambios. 32, mignon's, and ruth chris are all good restaurants for casinos, but you can pretty much do as good or better for much cheaper. If you want something different, I think Jia is the best casino restaurant.

Jourdan River Steamer has not re-opened since Hurricane Issac.

Jourdan River Steamer, in Kiln. You'll thank me for telling you about it.

We are hearing they may relocate to Biloxi or Ocean Springs... A new steamer opened in the old Vrazel's building in Gulfport.

Thanks for the reply - I was hoping that Red Sky was good. But I'm glad for the 1st hand report.

I've looked into 32, but the internet reviews are mixed (many say that it is hit or miss). Phoenicia is really good, but we've "been there - done that" plus we don't want to BYOB (the last several times that I was there they didn't serve wine). Never heard of Bacchus or Cambio, but I'm doing the research now - thanks!

To the other poster regarding Jourdan River Steamer, I've heard that it is really good. But, again, it's a long drive from The Kiln to Gautier after a couple glasses of wine.

Hate to hear that. Great food. Great atmosphere. I forget what they call it but that sampler plate will feed a small army

Rebel Dip and Gary's Two Mile North.
It must be casual date night. ;-)

After moving to Gulfport in 2000, it took me years to allow myself to eat at any establishment with Rebel in the title.

Anyhoo:

Thumbs up for Half Shell Oyster House (at least, in Gulfport), Ruth's Chris (Hard Rock - Biloxi), & Saluté (Gulfport). Vrazel's was where my wife and I annually shared our anniversary, before closing. BR Prime (Beau Rivage - Biloxi) is my choice, when atmosphere is the emphasis.

Trapani's (Bay St. Louis), used to be one of my favorites for local themed seafood. It's like New Orleans meets MS Gulf Coast. Like the Fried trout, topped with crawfish etoufee. The Paneed Chicken Italiano is Chicken Parm. done right. Their Red Gravy is a big, big plus. But, since Katrina, it has become inconsistent. Service is always very slow, and the atmosphere is noisy and somewhat casual for anniversary purposes.

Faux-suggestion: If you want to spend less than $20, take her to Brooklyn Pizza (Gulfport) and then tell her you can fold her like the pizza. Sleeping in the hall may ruin your anniversary. But, you'll remember the pizza.

The Steamer is closing down. It would be worth the drive to go there before it shuts down. Im not sure if its still open though.

I enjoyed the Shed yesterday. Casual dining at its finest. The food was great and they almost have indoor seating.

Makes me want some Lil' Dooeys. The coast is pretty much devoid of BBQ places.

Steamer was good, too, but you better bring a big piggy bank.

The Shed is over rated. Way too much chili powder in their sauce.

Bay St. Louis - Trapani's is overrated. Like Thirty-two said, the service is horrid, food is decent. There's a new place right next door to Trapani's called North Beach that is legit. Slightly nicer than Trapani's and same price.

Mary Mahoney's is literally World-Class. Highly recommend the crab legs.

I lived in Boston for a while and TWO separate random people found our where I was from and asked me if I had ever eaten there.

Said their family makes the trip to eat there every time they're in NOLA.

Never understood how famous that restaurant really is.
