Question for tech guys. I used to have directv but got rid of it about a year ago. The dish is still in the same place as before. Could I use the receiver we use for tailgating (with activated card)? I have tried everything but can get signal any tip or ideas?

Let's assume you have the new HD dish, with SWiM LNB. Most Tail Gate boxes use the old LNB.... Take a picture of the dish and post the model number of the box and we'll tell you how to get up and running.

I also assume your box is sending power to the dish (tail-gate box).

But is you have box and LNB that are compatible then you're set to go. Just don't plug in the phone line for allow internet access big brother is watch.

You have to have an active account with DirecTV in order to activate the card ( if the receiver the card that is married to is not obsolete, DTV will not activate cards on obsolete receivers ). If you receiver is more than 2 - 3 years old, it is probably considered obsolete and they won't activate it. Obsolete receivers are grandfathered to keep operating until the card is deactivated.

Model #D12-300

I am pretty sure the receiver is a couple of years older than the dish.
I do know that the card in the receiver is active because we use it at every game.
I think the problem has to be the dish and receiver and dish are not compatible. The dish we use at the tailgate is the older round dish.

D12-300 is a SD receiver. Using remote press menu>Sat & Antenna>Repeat Satellite Setup. Select the dish you have in the picture. I can't tell what is in that pic. Try Multi Switch and the dish looks like an Oval 36x22 it's not an 18" round. I can't tell how may bulbs are on the LNB (thing pointing at dish). D12-300 can only pick up the 101 Satellite. Keep Mulit Switch option and play around with the dish options till you pick the right one.

Oval is not an option.
Round 18"
3-LNB 18"X20"
Slimline3
Slimlin5

Common sense tells me none of those fits my dish it only has one LNB. Any other tips.

Try Slimline 3 the dish says slimeline on it. I think the older Slimline 3 has a single bulb lnb with 3 pickups in the bulb for 99, 101, 103 sats. If that doesn't work try them all starting w 18" round.

An issue you might be having is the location of the SWM power inserter. If you have previously had this dish hooked up with the power inserter try hooking up the power inserter to the same location it was previously connected when it was operating. I had similar issue when I unplugged the power supply in my house when I plugged it back in my box could not find my dish. I'm not sure exactly how to fix it I ended up restarting my box several times and unplugging and replugging in the power inserter and it randomly eventually found it but this did not seem to be an effective way to do this. If the cable coming from the dish is split before the location you are connecting the power inserter and receiver I would try connecting the SWM power inserter before this split and see if that will fix it. If the dish has multiple connections on the "head" of the dish make sure the cable with the power inserter is connected to the fitting designed to receive the power supply. One of the connections should have a marking on it. I can't remember what it is but I believe it had a red circle around it or something to that effect.

A couple of things to check.

1) It looks to me like you have a Slimline3 SWM LNB dish. It's definitely a 3 LNB dish not a 5. I say SWM because it looks like only 1 wire comes out of the LNB.

2) If it is a SWM LNB, then it has a built in SWM multiswitch (built into the head, you can't see it). Your SWM multiswitch needs a 29v power supply. If you don't have it, you won't get signal. If your dish ever worked, then at some point you had a power supply. It would look like this: http://www.solidsignal.com/pview.as...M16-(PI29Z)&c=Multiswitch Power Supplies&sku=

If you can't find it, you can buy that one for $12.

3) Your D12 box is compatible with a Slimline 3 LNB SWM. Go to repeat satellite setup and make sure its set on the right dish AND that it is set on SWM not multiswitch. It will tell you if it can detect the SWM or not. It won't detect it if the SWM isn't powered.

4) Just a note, your box will get signal (like when you "view signal strength") even if your card is out of service. You won't be able to view programming, but you can see the satellites.

5) That one "head" you see has 3 LNBs in it. The Slimline 5 has 3 "heads" 1 contains 3 and the other 2 contain 1 each.

6) If you get tired of messing with it the Tailgate Co. still has spots available for all remaining home games haha

Post back here and let us know how its coming.

If your using a 18" round SD dish at the tailgate. The 18" round doesn't need a power inserter. If the dish in your pic only has one wire (SWM single wire multiswitch) then you do need one. As Tailgate Co. posted.

Ok tailgateco we have a winner I have determined the problem is no power supply to the swn. After looking closer at the dish it is definitely a swn and I vaguely remember a power supply when I had an active account and wondering what it was. I have given up for now. And btw thanks for the offer of setup but was usually don't have much problems setting up at the tailgate.

Thanks guys for all your help.
