Not season/episode specific here (though this season has been fantastic, I have a few book-related gripes) - I just finished reading Storm of Swords (best of the three) but have heard/read that books 4 and 5 are pretty underwhelming compared to the first ones. I'm going to continue them anyway but anyone who has read them have an opinion?

also, where are they in the season as related to the books? I'm in the middle of Clash of Kings right now. Would it be a spoiler if I started with the show's first season? Or have then not made it that far?</p>

Started out slow. Partly because it had to follow Swords which was epic. It didn't help that we get a few new pov's and are missing several old ones. After you get passed that shock it good. Ive just started Dragons so I can't speak to that.

And dont worry, the pov's you miss in feast pick back up with dragon. Ty, Jon, Dany, even that little **** Bran. Brans story bored the hell out of me at the start but as soon as I was getting into it went poof(in Feast anyway)

I think the fan opinions of books 4 and 5 suffer from expecting the greatness of book 3 without realizing that it took 3 books worth of build-up to get there. books 4 and 5 are clearly setting up future greatness. if you read them without expecting to reach any plot conclusions, then you should enjoy them for what they are. not that there's not any plot conclusions at all.

also, they each introduce a lot more characters and stories, and it's hard to appreciate them if you're only interested in getting to what happens to the characters you already know.

Season 2 feels incredibly rushed, IMO.

This season I've already counted several changes. Nothing earth shattering. So far season one followed book one, this season book two. Rumors abound that they will make two seasons out of the third book.

as they adapting a book for 10 hours of TV. They've just streamlined everything pretty well:

*Not spoilers as long as you are current on the show*

examples:

Theon realizing quickly his place without all the inner monologue
Arya being taken to Harrenhall without wandering through the woods with her friends first
Tyrion's plot to find the mole went from a chapter basically to a minute and it was a great scene

Some things didn't start happening to much later in the book but they have to show people so the audience remembers (daenerys, night watch)

The biggest difference is they are taking things that were only hinted at in the books but showing them on TV and making them large scenes
- killing Robert's bastards
- Craester's boy children
- Stannis and the red woman's getting it on

I realize they have taken out some characters or given their parts to someone else (Bronn for Night Watch commander) but I don't see how they get by without the Green's at Winterfell.

I had never watched it before. As soon as I turn it on about 8:35, boobs are on the screen.

AFFC and ADWD take place mostly simultaneously with half the plot lines in each book with very little overlap. I hope they do push book 3 to two seasons. It is too crazy for one. Also, I don't have a problem with the changes made so far. The only one to really bug me was changing the name of Theon's sister from Asha to Yara.

the reason for the Asha to Yara change would be confusion over Osha. Of course, she hasn't been in an episode yet so my theory could be off.

I missed Sunday but Asha/Yara was introduced in the prior episode and Osha was in plenty last season.

aside from the Targareyens and the Lannister twins who used the Targareyens as justification.

AFFC is very slow in the beginning because there are so many new POVs to introduce, but once I got used to the new characters I really started to enjoyed it. Obviously, any book following Storm of Swords was going to move slow because of the magnitude of events that occurred in that book. AFFC does a great job of setting the post-war scene and I think is preparing us for some truly great things to happen in the 6th book.<div>
</div><div>My favorite chapters in book 4 are those that involve Brienne or the Greyjoys. The turmoil between Jaime and Cersei is great too, but sometimes I feel like there are too many chapters from Cersei's POV. That's my only real complaint. I can't wait to read A Dance With Dragons to pick up more of Tyrion, Jon Snow, and Bran storylines again.</div>

do leave some to be desired. I believe that the intent was to originally have these as one book, but it was too much. So basically, instead of cutting the plot line in half, he cut the characters in half. As someone else said, the books are essentially the same time line, only following different characters. That being said, ADWD is significantly better than AFFC. Maybe i like those characters more, but I found I enjoyed it much more (Up until the very end, but I won't spoil that). I am excited for The Winds of WInter which releases this summer, and I believe the last installment will release next summer.<div>
</div><div>As far as the show goes, I like it a lot. There few changes haven't really bothered me so far this season. I do feel like it is moving fairly quickly though, and some book 3 points may be brought in at the end of this season. That wouldn't surprise me.</div>

I read Book 4 several years ago and re-read it a few months ago right after Book 5 was released. I checked out both books from the public library and read them both. I thought it was a pretty good way of doing things considering how those two books are set up.

Lannister twins
The new guy in the woods banging all his daughters
The new smoking hot queen who told her gay king husband it'd be fun to bring her brother into bed.
Greyhound finger banging his sister.
The Targaryeans.

That's 5 incest story lines.

Although Margaery Tyrell didn't say it would be fun to include her brother, it was just necessary to make a little heir. And Theon didn't know.

It's hinted that he prefers dressing nicely and such over battle, but does anyone even whisper that he gets down with guys?

Hate to break it to you but there is no way in hell that Winds of Winter is out this summer. Probably not even next summer. The last book took 5 years and he said he wasnt even starting on the next until January. At this rate, I just hope he doesn't pull a Robert Jordan.

Martin did everything but write in a sex scene. But it would be easy to miss, especially since you are constantly worried about who is going to die next.

I had read a sample from it, and thought it was finished. After a quick wiki search, turns out that is incorrect. Martin just released an except is is currently sitting on like 200 pages of raw manuscript. I swear I read that release date somewhere, but there is no telling where.

Don't count out 4 and 5. Here's why 4 and 5 wound up the way they did: Originally, it was all one book, but it was way too big, so the author decided the best way to split it up was by characters, not by time. So instead of 2 books where you only get a chapter or two of each character, you have more of each character's story per book.

Thats why book 4 starts out slow, lots of new characters to develop, and the characters that you're already familiar with are often ones it's hard to get used to reading from the point of view of (Cercei, Jamie). There's only a few chapters that I could have done without - such as one (not sure if it was book 4 or 5) where Jon spends the entire chapter doing an complete inventory of their food. Seriously.

Book 5, **** starts hitting the fan with all of the best characters.

Weirdly enough, by the end of book 5, an unexpected character was becoming one of my favorites. It rhymes with meek.

Sanderson is a fantastic writer and the right man for the task of handling Jordan's legacy. I have signed copies of the last two books thanks to having family in Baltimore willing to go to his signings there. Fortunately we've only got till January 2013 to see the Wheel of Time come to an end. I'd love to see that story get the HBO treatment but 14 books is a bit long. They'd have to chop out a good chunk of it.

Jordan Probably has 3x the characters that Martin has. Not to mention that magic is more abundant and would cost a good bit in terms of special effects. </p>
