I may make some folks upset with this one, but what is the deal with all these giant crosses around North Mississippi. There is one in Boonville, Iuka, Corinth, and Saltillo. Also, Aberdeen and Pontotoc are about to get one. Am I crazy thinking that money ($250,000) would be better spent somewhere else? I get having one cross in the State, but this is getting a little crazy. I just wish I would have started a cross-making business because someone is making bank. We already have a church on every corner in the State, now we have a cross in every town. BTW, I am very involved in my church and love the Lord, but I think we could do more for Christ with that money than a roadside cross.

If it’s a church, which is a group of a lot of people's money, I would agree (or some other type of big communal fund where it’s not clear where the money is going). Unless they all voted on or it knew exactly what it was going towards. If it’s on private land, who cares, I can’t tell someone what to spend their money on.

I don’t see the big issue here. I also don’t see a big issue with strip club billboards.

Add Eupora to the list of towns w/ one, complete w/ solar panels for powering the lights at night. It's right along 82 at the main exit

There are several on I-20 across North Louisiana. A giant one in Bossier near the racetrack.

Nothing says " I serve Christ" like erecting a 200 ft metal shed in the shape of a cross for $250,000.

Can you imagine the favor that God would rain down upon your community if you were to erect a giant Trump statue next to your giant aluminum cross? Only question is which should be bigger.

Talk about a business idea...

My god... that business proposal plan practically writes itself!

When you start this company please name it "Erect Trump, LLC"

I hate them. I have always said the most Christian people I have ever known never once brought up their faith. They just lived the way Christ intended and it was obvious. This flavor of Christianity where it gets shoved down peoples’ throats flies in the face of what I feel Jesus stood for. Like OP said, that money could have been spent on people who truly needed it. I have a feeling that’s what the guy who was actually on the cross would have preferred.

Then again, god and I aren’t exactly pals so my opinion doesn’t really mean jackshit on this.

Their land and they can do what they want with it. I would not do it. It does not disturb me one bid. Not like I have to sit and look at it all day. We have a cell tower on our 220 acres in Madison County. Good extra income each month but it is in the way. If I remember correctly, they tried to get a permit to put a big cross at first Baptist church in Brandon, but it was too close to airport and could not get permit. I think.

Feed the hungry or put up a large cross? I think that the idea of best use of funds hits very similar at home as it does to very visible things like those crosses. How do I know if I'm doing "enough", being greedy, etc. I don't know of a good way to measure it. Maybe one the rabbi or preacher can weigh in with some insight...

I will say that every time I pass a billboard imploring me to call some number or visit some website to learn the "truth", I have a desire to find out who funds these and ask them if it is ever successful.

Fun exercise:
Find in the Bible where Christ encouraged symbols, idols, or effigies in worship.

Imagine what Jesus would do if he walked into some of these mega churches with 6 basketball courts, a Starbucks, and state of the art concert hall...

Kind of on the same line, Santa Rosa county in Florida was proposing buying a $150,000 giant American flag to put in Milton, Fl. They were suggesting tax revenue would make up for it because people would visit Milton to see the flag. Hey honey, I know we are spending the weekend in Navarre relaxing by the gorgeous water and not a care in the world, is it okay that we drive an hour and a half away round trip to see a big flag?

Consider it advertising and if this is upsetting you, well, there are far worse things being done. Most of these are being paid for by businesses, not churches.
