I know we’re close to football season but I hope you’ll indulge the OT.
I’m in the market for a used truck and shopping for a 3rd gen Silverado or Sierra (2014-2018). It’s nearly impossible to find one with under 100,000 miles. I’ve seen many online that look nearly new and were clearly taken good care of but now have 150-170,000 miles. I’ve read that transmissions were sometimes a problem, particularly the 8-speed. Is it stupid to even consider buying a GM truck with this many miles? If I had to put a new engine in, I know that would be cheaper with a GM than most other makes. Advice? Insults?

$3,500 for a new motor. I installed myself so can't tell you what that would cost. If you have to use a shop it'll be around $2500 I've heard. It's still cheaper than a new truck. Mine is a 2005 Sierra, body still decent interior is really good. Back seat like brand new, never really hauled passengers but did haul a lot of wood pulled many heavy trailers.

My dad just traded for a new Duramax because his 2023 3 months ago had transmission issues that involve the transmission module that is currently on back order. They told him it might be November or December before they had the part. With our line of work not having our truck with all our tools is a no go so he just traded it.

Insults?
Damn straight
Stop being an emotional girl
Abandon the thought of late-model reliability
Go to bringatrailer.com
Buy an old school truck and stop bitching like a biznatch

I have a 2014 Suburban with almost 185k miles, my BIL has over 300k on thier 2017. No transmission issues but have done suspension work.

Let me add she drove it cross country 21 hours to Kansas without an issue.

I have it on good authority that those trucks are not made Ford Tough

I have a 2018 Silverado with 8x,xxx miles and have been very happy with it. Sometimes it shifts a little hard into 2nd and 3rd going down a hill, but that's been about it as far as transmission issues go.

Get the 6.2 engine
I've made a list of trucks I plan to take a look at locally and several have the 6.2. Unfortunately, my friend just had to replace his 6.2 in a 2023 with less than 80,000 miles. I've heard similar stories which is why I'm trying to shop for a pre-2019.

If you buy a used GM truck with Active Fuel Management, you are playing with fire. A 2020ish Silverado pulled up next to me a juat couple days ago at the fuel pump with a very noticeable lifter tap. That engine is basically dead already.

I would have to know the truck and that the owner serviced it on point with very good oil.

I’ve got a 2020 6.2 GMC with 120,000 miles and haven’t had any trouble. Haul trailers regularly. Occasionally pull a 75 hp tractor around.

Plenty of power and it’ll scoot. It’s fun to drive.

I bought my 2015 brand new. 5.3. It has 170k now. The transmission did have to be rebuilt at 150k. But that 4K is cheaper than the 50-60k to replace it. I have had no other issues with it. It still runs great.

My 2021 Silverado has 140,000 pretty trouble free miles. Rogers Dabbs told me in the 80,000 mile range that I needed a new $7500 transmission because the torque converter was going out. Took it to an independent transmission guy who changed the fluid and charged me $250. No issues since.

Whatever kind of truck or vehicle you have about every 8,000 miles put you some Seafoam in the tank when you fill up.

1 oz per gallon.

Absolutely I’m sticking with my Ram Longhorn Limited edition. It was hard to get but worth it, I got it with the 3.92 rear end and it pulls like a diesel and will absolutely fly. Plus the interior is unbelievable and absolutely not rickety and plastic as hell like gm trucks. Real wood grain, cowhide leather seats. Will park it’s self and drive it’s self even and I enjoy the air suspension I can lower or raise it up three levels when I feel like it. Love the truck. My last truck was an 09 Dodge Ram Laramie that got over 340K miles before the engine needed replacing and it’s still going strong today. Hope my new one does as well. I wouldn’t touch a gm truck if I had to put my money into it. They’re at the bottom of the pack these days when it comes to the trucks out there. Ram stays at the top so I’ll stay with them. Ford’s are much better choice also than gm.

Still driving my 2008 F150 275,000 miles….
Did put a transmission in a couple years ago and rework front end but 6 cylinder still going.
