Of course everything depends on what your tastes are....but Port City Cafe (Downtown Gulfport, Downtown Biloxi, and on Pass Road in Biloxi), Blowfly Inn (Gulfport), and Bacchus (Downtown Gulfport) are all pretty good..and casual. If you have a specific flavor your looking for..just let me know and I'll give you some options.

I lived less than a hundred yards from there before Katrina and it was damn hard to not spend the money on that ridiculous dish.

Great shrimp po boy at Port o call in D'Ibervile.

Seafood platter at McElroy's just over the bridge in Ocean Springs.

Has anyone tried the new Shaggy's yet? Was still not open when I left Keesler. I have to go back down this summer and hoping to give it a try.

http://shaggys.biz/

Also there is some pretty good little local places across the bridge in Ocean Springs on Govt Street.

Get drinks and the combo dozen oysters at the bar. Four differently prepared varieties, outstanding.

Then drive west down the beach to Shaggy's at the marina in Pass Christian. Great beach bar overlooking the marina. Get whatever the fish of the day is. It is awesome, they blacken it and serve with a light cream sauce and either veggies or fried eggplant. They have fried shrimp and stuff too, and a fun beach type bar atmosphere.

This is my usual routine when on the coast for work. Last night, Shaggy's had redfish- incredible.

I also highly recommend Bacchus in Gulfport for fine yet casual dining, and taranto's in ocean springs or woolmarket for steamed crab legs or crawfish. When on the coast, find somewhere with seafood. Do not go to white cap.

Couple'a less expensive places that are great:
Brooklyn Pizza, Courthouse and Pass
Tony's Pizza, Downtown Gulfport (great atmosphere)
Mr. Greek, End of Pass Rd. near the base
The Korean Restaurant in that same strip mall. Great place.
Back Bay is not inexpensive but I love it.
Sakura, corner of Pass and Eisenhower
Lil' Ray's is the best for local seafood in the local way.
hate Buffet's but if you want one try King Buffet on Eisenhower
Mugshots is near there, but you know about that.
Biloxi restaurrants actually allow smoking, but not Gulfport
El Rancho is a fun place to eat Mexican
Oyster House is all the rage. Both cities.
The Brew Pub is closed, so screw the Beaudacious Rivage

Half Shell in Gulfport is our favorite. Lookouit was good when it was north on 49. I presume it's still good in downtown Gulfport.

Also, the Fillin' Station in downtown, on the corner of Main St. and Howard Ave is an awesome watering hole... great appetizers, brew, and live music.

Schooner Restaurant in downtown is also good for po-boys and such...

Lookout now has Lookout Steakhouse in downtown Gulfport within 2 blocks of Tony's Pizza, Half Shell, Port City, Bacchus, The Quarter, Watson's Piano Bar, etc. There's a mass of food/drink/entertainment in that area now.

Chef Scott across the bridge in Ocean Springs is a great sushi experience (BYOAlcohol). Phoenicia, Jocelyn's, Manhatten Grill. Ocean Springs does well. (Does Jocelyn (sp.?) still do her thing? Haven't heard anything about that place in awhile...wouldn't be surprised if she closed it down. Would be too bad.)

Authentic Mexican -- El Mexicano on 30th Ave. in Gulfport -- family owned... not the big chain type Mexican places you are used to.

Pasta Italia on 30th also.

The Shed in O.S. on a Saturday night is a good experience too if you have never done that.

Here are a few I would suggest:

Mediterraneo in Ocean Springs: Excellent food!
Phoenician in Ocean Springs: Excellent Food!
Capt. Al's north of Industrial Canal on Lorraine Road: great steaks on a wood fire and great shrimp.
Blow Fly Inn on Bayou Bernard: Primarily traditional friend seafood.
Half Shell in Biloxi a little northwest of the Beau: Great Oysters of every kind
McKelroy' across the US 90 Bridge from Biloxi in Ocean Springs: Traditional Fried Seafood.
El Saltillo in Ocean Springs for Mexican.
Jocelyn's in Ocean Springs: Great seafood, a little pricey.
Trapani's in Bay St. Louis on Hwy 90. Best fresh speckled trout and redfish with crawfish ettouffee you will ever eat!

at Yes Noodle, Kim Long, and the IP Asian restaurant. Subtle differences between them and all are quite good. You'll be full but eat Bootleggers Pizza anyway. It's non-deep dish Chicago style. The Mediterranean places in Ocean Springs are good. El Saltillo is cheap as **** but good. The place has several TV's for sports to keep you from noticing the illegals cooking and serving your food. You'll see a Waffle House about every 30 yards along Highway 90 ("scattered, smothered and covered sugar") so stop in if you have no reason to live. The whole, stuffed founder at Port O Call is worth eating and there's nothing wrong with ordering a seafood poboy and not wanting it pressed (but Barqs is required). Start throwing money out of the window as you drive to Treasure Bay just to prepare yourself for the inevitable. Waste $100 there gambling, look derisively at those around you and head to the buffet to eat your losses back. Stick to dungeness crabs, key lime pie, and ice cream because the rest of the food is inedible. Unless you're female, in which case the salad is probably fine as a starter. And feel free to tell your girlfriends how good the salad was.

I was down there a couple of years ago and ate at a plae called Steve's Marina. Not sure why it is has Marina in the name as it is 3 or 4 miles from the coast. However, I loved the food there. As you might would imagine it is a seafood place but they seemed to have not quite your traditional seafood menu you find at every other place. I think the place is technically in Long Beach but not a bad drive from Biloxi at all.

Tien at IP has great Pho. My wife and I usually get a sushi roll or two and split the HUGE bowl of Pho you get for only $7

I also recommend Tarantos in Ocean Springs (it's not easy to see from the highway, so google it). They have crawfish deals on Friday and Sunday. I usually get their dungeoness crab, but I've also recently had their Ribeye Steak with boiled shrimp on the side. I would recommend that.

Phoenicia is also good in Ocean Springs.

If you want BBQ, go get Fed at the Shed. It's about a quarter mile north of I-10 off the HWY 59 Exit in Ocean Springs.

I would stay away from casina buffets, but if you have to do one, I like Boomtown (and I hear Treasure Bay is great).

Half-Shell Oyster in Gulfport or Biloxi is great (depending on which side of the coast you're on). Mary Mahoney's has great seafood and steaks, but don't go there and not get seafood. The Snapper Bienville will be the best thing you've ever had.

And finally, I've found that Hooters Biloxi has the most talent...unless it's Friday after about six (that's when Gulfport has their varsity team in).

ate there two weeks ago. The food was great. Have had both steak and seafood dishes there and all are wonderful.

Also, for something a little out of the way and nostalgic, make the jump over to Goula and hit Edds Drive Inn.....get a couple of chili cheeseburgers (they are kind of small but good) and a thick chocolate shake. Throwback kind of place but good stuff. Your colon will not be happy, but your taste buds will.

After Katrina, Steve's Marina and The Lookout restaraunts relocated from the Long Beach harbor to locations on 49 in Gulfport. In the past year or so, both have relocated - Steve's back to the Long Beach harbor and the Lookoutto downtown Gulfport.

But if you're forced to find something else (he leaves for 6 weeks a year to return to his homeland), Mary Mahoney's stuffed flounder and lobster georgio are GREAT choices.

Coast native here, even though now retired in CO. Just got back from getting my seafood fix for five days on the coast. NEW FAVORITE: HALF SHELL IN BILOXI. Great grilled oysters! Avoid Shaggy's like the plague! Terrible food there but the beer and views were quite nice. Also do not waste your money at the White Cap.

McElroy's in Ocean Springs is always excellent with some of the best gumbo anywhere and very good steamed shrimp.

If you get over to Goula there is a lunch spot on Ingall's Ave called Bozo's that is a seafood market/dive. One of the best poboys anywhere! The shrimp runneth out!
Also good hamburgers and roast beef poboys.

In Ocean Springs - for lunch - try BB's. It is our coast favorite for lunch. I always get the seafood combo - shrimp, oysters, and crabmeat. BBs and Bozo's are far superior to Lil Ray's for poboys. They do serve excellent poboys at the Biloxi Schooner, but you can't get a beer or wine there because it is right across the street from the Biloxi Cathedral.

I don't usually do buffets, but we enjoyed an excellent one at the Palace Casino (Tue is senior special day there and my sister - in - law insisted we go there. Very good!

Mary Mahoney's is always superb. We didn't get there this time because we ate at the Half Shell twice. However Mary Mahoney's is consistently the best place on the coast.

And if you want to drop some serious cash try 32 on the top floor of the Imperial Palace Hotel and Casino. Views are awe inspiring, food is excellent, and wine list is the best on the coast.

Enjoy!

Capt. Al's north of Industrial Canal on Lorraine Road: great steaks on a wood fire and great shrimp. - why get steak if you're on the coast?
Blow Fly Inn on Bayou Bernard: Primarily traditional friend seafood. - average like lil rays
Half Shell in Biloxi a little northwest of the Beau: Great Oysters of every kind

El Saltillo in Ocean Springs for Mexican. - why get mexican if you're on the coast?

Trapani's in Bay St. Louis on Hwy 90. Best fresh speckled trout and redfish with crawfish ettouffee you will ever eat! - too far to go if you're in GPT/BLX if you can get the same type of stuff elsewhere
last time iate there a few months ago about 50% of us in a 20+ group got food poisoning. their staff turnover is very high so they get a lot ofyoung workers. i'm donewith Phoenicia.

if you wanta nonchain gulf coast seafood experience and you'll be in GPT/BLX then Mahoney's (stuffed snapper is there #1 dish for a reason), the oyster house in GPT on 49 are the places to go for dinner. Best shrimp poboy on the coast is at Desporte Seafood in BLX - best batter and the shrimp is cooked on demand and always fresh bc this is a fresh seafood distributor first, small diner second.

***not a shot at you Backer.justmy opinion and your list was helpful.

but even if true, it's good enough to risk it.

I will second that Lil Ray's and Blow Fly are average. If you want seafood and poboys, I'll second whoever mentioned tarantos woolmarket.

Also second on Mary Mahoney's.

Bacchus in gulfport is as good or better than Half Shell, but doesn't have the options as far as how oysters are cooked.

Gulfport has/had a place called Confusion. Was good last time I was in Gulfport but somebody told me it might be closed now.

There are good hole-in-the-wall restaurants in Long Beach and Pass Christian, but can't really remember what they're called.

Awesome and cheap Vietnamese style Po-boys, great bread, $3.75 each and try a bubble tea, any flavor is good. They also have great pastries, breakfast croissants and king cakes.

Edited to add

Had no idea this place existed. Hadn't had a good Vietnamese poboy in ages. And if they're bringing French pastry skills as well, then this is a dynamite find. Might have to be the first place to stop when I'm in Biloxi. Just wish I could get the Pho at the IP, the combination fried rice at Yes Noodle, the fresh spring rolls at Kim Long, and the poboy all at the same place.
