I need a new grill for the beach house. The beach air is eating up my two year old gas grill. Thinking about a green egg. Will the green egg hold up to the salty corrosion? Is there a cheaper knockoff that is just as good as the green egg?

The Kamado Joe is just a better value. I saw the classic (Same size as a large BGE) for $750 at Lowes the other day. It comes with a stand and lots of accessories at that price. BGE large is hard to find bare bones for less than$900.

I scoured lots of boards before I got mine and you are basically talking GMC vs Chevy. Nothing wrong with either, but both owners think theirs is better. If you find a large BGE for $750 or less with a stand and a few extras it would be a great deal and I would snag it.

It should hold up well, but I have always kept mine under a covered porch and nowhere near saltwater.

I have a BGE and love it. Had it for 12 years. Cooks great as a grill or a smoker. Not much that would react to corrosion, in my opinion. I think Kamodo Joe is cheaper, but have no experience with one.

If you clean it good and coat with oil after use you should be good. Just keep it covered and keep vents open to breathe

Had a rental on the beach this year that had a BGE. No idea how long it’s been there but all the metal parts are rusted. The ceramic, obviously, was all fine.

That's a good point too. All of the grates and interior components that come on the Joe are stainless. I imagine the hinge and chimney are just powder coated steel and cast iron. You definitely would want a cover to protect the exterior metal components from that salty moisture in the air.

I regularly fish with a family out of Dauphin Island. They have an egg on each of their boats and it is no issue.

i have had a green egg for 8 years now and I live a couple miles from the beach. Just get a BGE cover, secure it, and you will be good to go.

This isn’t what you asked but when we moved to Gulf Breeze I had a Charbroil that I had in SC for 4 years with no issues. Within 2 years living a half mile from the salt water it was wrecked. I bought a Weber all stainless grill and 8 years later it is still in great shape. I’ve only had to replace the flavorizor bars.

What Willi said. I live in Gulf Shores and have a BGE on patio. No problems at all after 5 years under the BGE cover. Most sport fishing boats here have BGE on them.

Get a Chargriller Akorn. Much better value and they cook great. I live at the beach and have no issues at all. The Akorn's grates are cast iron and easy to clean up real nice.

I have a Kamado Joe and a Visions Kamado at the beach. Both are over five years old and no rust. The Vision came from Sams and all the hardware is all Stainless Steel. The cooking system and grates are better on the KJ.

Which one? They have an entry level model Lowe’s / HD for about $300 that is double paned sheet steel with insulation between the layers. I’ve had one of those for about 7 - 8 years and its been great, but its about to bite the dust. Even when covering it, corrosion is starting to eat away the lower steel sections. I bought an aftermarket stainless steel grate that has been a good change from the cast iron, which required too much seasoning for my liking.

They now also have a ceramic version of the same grill for $650. I’m curious about how well it stacks up to the BGE and Kamado Joe, as it is a much lower price point.

We live on a bayou a couple miles from the gulf water. I have an egg completely uncovered, it’s probably 15 to 20 years old and has been on our deck here for 6 years. The only issue I’ve had is I had to replace the bottom vent because of rust but that’s more likely because it’s been uncovered in the rain rather than salt.

Kamado Joe's integrated accessory rack is much better than BGE. Had several BGE owners come eat at the house and they all make the same comment.

Thanks - I haven’t heard of this brand. Are these the main three?

Big Green Egg, Kamado Joe, and Primos are the big three of Ceramic grills. All others are just branded Chinese knock offs. BGE uses Mexican ceramics with everything else US made and assembled. KJ uses Chinese ceramic with everything else US made and assembled. Primo is 100% American made. All three you buy because of the lifetime warranty. BGE has the largest dealer network with Primos being the smallest. The Chinese brands cook just as well as the big three but they are disposable, they may claim a great warranty but good luck with that. Buy one of the big three with a local dealer that will be there when you need them. I have BGE at home because I have a great dealer who has a no questions asked attitude toward warranty, something breaks, I take a picture and he replaces it. I have a KJ at the beach because there is a dealership right down the road.

Good info - there’s an ace hardware dealer a few miles away.

No Bayou Classic owners? I have had a BC for about 13 years now and it is amazing...never had any of the other brands mentioned, but Dad has had both the BGE (current) and BC and says that the BC holds temp better and gets hotter. BC used to be cheaper than the BGE but that may have changed now.

I have a Kamado Joe and my father has a BGE. They are both very good smokers/grills and you can't go wrong with either one. You do get more for the same price with a KJ as you do for a BGE though. Two thing that separates the KG from the BGE is the split heat deflector and the upper vent. The upper vent on the series 2 KJ is a much better than the daisy wheel on the BGE. The biggest thing is the heat deflector, on a my KJ I can remove one half of the deflector and set a grate in it's place. I can set up the split system and sear a steak on one side right over the coals then finish it to temp on the indirect side. This is the only way I cook a steak over 1.5" thick.
