Got a friend with an early 70's model Belgium Browning Light 12ga and he is wondering what it's worth. He isn't going to sell it because it has been passed down through his family. Anybody know a rough value of those? He wants to know if it's enough to get it insured. I go for the cheap stuff and don't know much about collectables

Not worth insuring. They are not as rare as much as a lot of people think they are. If it's in nib condition it could be worth around 1200. Most of the guns those days were used a good bit and 'good' condition ones usually go for around 500-600. Tell him to check out some online auctions to get a good idea of how much it's worth. If he knows for sure what year it was made and an estimated condition I have a blue book subscription and could look it up. They also sell blue book of gun values at books a million and Barnes and noble. I use to drive there and look up prices because I was too cheap to buy one.

I bought a SKS at the Roses in Pearl in 1992 for $119.00. Manufactured in Romania. Had to go home and strip it to clean all the cosmoline off. Bullets were $4.00/ box and packed in something very close in viscosity to Crisco. I sold that gun a few years later. Today's value? Close to $1000.00.

Plus...for you conspiracy theory nuts...if you insure your guns, they are on an insurance policy and therefore a record of your gun ownership and accessible by the Feds.

He also has the original box and sales receipt of $89.99 were it was purchased. We took it to a gun show once just to see what dealers would offer. It's in like new condition but has been shot, I would say %95. Offerer were in the $800-$1000 dollar range until they saw the box. Best offer with the box was $2500

I assumed the box wouldn't be with it. It's a one in a thousand chance, and probably higher, that someone has their box. In my 2+ years in guns I've never encountered one and I've been to 10+ auctions. That's a very rare find and an awesome collectible. Last week a guy brought me a high power that was made during nazi occupied Belgium. It had the nazi eagle stamps on it. It's always exciting to see pieces of history like that. The guys dad picked it up off a German officer.

No is not worth anywhere near $1000. All matching numbers in unfired condition, maybe $550 tops. Probably more like $450 Also bullets for them (7.62x39) are currently $4-$5 a box. Honestly if you paid $119 for an SKS and $4 for a box of ammo in 1992 you paid way too much

Aim Surplus normally has them for $299
