I have a 3'x5' flag I want to hang on a wall, nothing fancy or anything. That said, I want to display it respectfully. Is it kosher to put tacks in the flag to hang it? It looks like it only has grommets on one side.

If that's not kosher, how do you Boy Scouts suggest I hang it? I'll hang up & listen.

Just hang it by the grommets. Or, like Angus says, use double-sided tape. But you can't put tacks in it.

After reviewing flag protocol, I have no idea, but I did discover that all of those ladies in imissplatinumplus's Hump Day post are violating the protocol. If they were true patriots, they would remove their American flag garb.

Make sure you hang it correctly, if you hang it as a banner. When hung vertically, the blue field is in the upper left ... blue, white, red. It's amazing how many think it's red, white, blue and hang it backward.

Of course, if you're hanging it horizontally, it's just like on a flag pole.

Break down and go to Wal-Mart and buy a 3ft curtain rod with wall brackets. Problem solved.

Does anyone actually care enough to

get mad if you violate "flag protocol"? I honestly get more upset when someone misuses the word "literally."

Here's one from the flag code of 1942 I found interesting

 • No part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic uniform; flag patches are allowed as part of the uniform of a federal, state, civic or patriotic organization.

And people wear them as shirts, pants, hats, use them as tablecloths ... endless things. And every time is see something like that I think of the rule you quoted.

Question on a flag rule...I seem to remember from my scouting days that if someone flew the flag upside down that you were supposed to call 911 as that meant there was an emergency there.

The flag should never be displayed upside down except as a sign of distress.
That does not mean vertical, it means with blue on the bottom.

Flag pins are OK. John Daly's pants in the tournament yesterday were not. He may have thought he was being patriotic, but it was disrespectful according to the flag rules. For heaven's sake ... he SITS on a representation of the flag.
