My son who will be a freshman at State next year needs a winch for his TJ. He's paying for it but was asking my advice on if I knew anyone who had a smittybilt xrc800 winch synthetic, or a used Warn for around the same price. Also he read good things about a cheaper one called Superwinch LP8500. He has a Smittybilt src front bumper that he purchased, but with the number of times he has been stuck in the mud, I am encouraging him to get a decent winch.

The Smittybilt and Superwinch are both manufactured in China, not that that's a deal breaker. The Warn is better quality but more expensive. It really depends on how much it will be used, or is it just for looks? The synthetic cable is really nice. I have the Smittybilt with syn cable on my 2012 wrangler, but have only used it once just to see if it worked and very likely won't use it very often. If I were a rock crawler or a mudder and used it regularly, I would spring for the Warn. The weak point of any winch is the gears, cast gears are more prone to failure than cut/machined gears. I could buy two Smittybilts for the price of a comparable Warn and have owned Warns in the past. That was my reasoning for my decision.

The best wenches can balance a stein on each mammary. These can be hard to find.

I hope that helps.

Thanks for the advice.
