One of my kids and I are gonna be in Birmingham next week to check out the Mcwane Center, zoo, and a couple of other museums. Can anyone recommend some hotels that they've stayed and had positive experiences and ones to avoid?

Thanks

We always priceline a hotel there, and usually end up at the Sheraton for about $70. We've also gotten the Hilton for about the same price.

If you're not familiar with the workaround for making multiple bids on priceline, pick 3.5 stars and Central Birmingham on Name Your Own Price. You can keep adding areas that don't have 3.5 star hotels and incrementally increase your bid. Central Birmingham and Hoover are the only areas that have 3.5 star hotels (doublecheck that before starting your bidding, but I believe that's correct), so you can bid about 10 times. I usually start at around $50 and end up paying $60-$75 in Birmingham. I've gotten the Sheraton every time but once, and the other was the Hilton. Both are good hotels.

Second this. Pretty easy drive in to the McWain Center from there too. Townhome Suites at I-65 and Lakeshore is another good one. But their free breakfast sucks, so plan on going out for breakfast.

We like to stay in the Homewood area.

Stayed at the A-Loft (trendy type with a good bar which probably isn't high on your list of important things with your kid), and the Embassy Suites. Embassy was nice enough with slow as Christmas maid service. Decent breakfast and is very close to the zoo (we did it last summer) and very close to McWane. Go eat at Saw's BBQ on Oxmoor. Also try Demetris BBQ for breakfast.
