In town w/ work for a week, soon. Any suggestions? Appolgies if already discussed, in the past. I ran a search in the forum and came up with nothing on the topic.

Not sure what your budget is, but the Westin in Bridge Street is probably the nicest in town. A short distance away is the Marriott at the Space and Rocket Center. There's an Embassy Suites downtown, as well as another suites hotel (I think Spring Hill) almost next door. And then there's the plethora of "regular" places ... HI and HI express, etc. There's a new something at Bridge Street also; even the "cheap" ones tend to be nice when they're new. I've seen a Hilton Gardens somewhere, but can't remember exactly where. There's basically no limit to your choices.

Everything RD said is correct. It all really depends on where you are going to be working during the week. The Westin and Hampton Inn over by Bridge Street give you the shortest drive to anywhere in Research Park or Gate 9 for the arsenal. The hotels by the S&RC are good for those locations as well, and have easy access to the Sparkman/Wynn Drive area. Embassy and Spring Hill Suites downtown are near the VBC if that is where your meetings are. The hotels near Intergraph/Boeing/Jetplex/Airport in Madison are on the cheaper side.

Looks like

the meetings are taking place at the Bevill Conf Center and Hotel, so I guess I'll just be there. It's on UAH's campus. Any thoughts on the hotel?

Bevill is less than five minutes away from downtown and there are some good places to eat and drink. Here is the event site for things going on. www.ourvalleyevents.com.

You'd be good with the Westin, Marriott, or anything near Bridge Street. Probably only a mile or two away from the Bevill Conference Center. And the Embassy Suites and Spring Hill are probably only 10 minutes away, depending on traffic. Pretty sure the Hilton Gardens is quite near the University.

And AF102 said the Madison hotels are on the cheaper side ... that's right, and some are even worse. Lots of drug arrests recently at a couple of them. I'd stay away unless it's the Hampton Inn near there. But that's quite a ways from the Bevill Center anyway.

You can also order Ruth's for room service at that hotel. The A-loft is nearby and has a decent bar.

Never been in the hotel. Bevill Center is reasonably nice.
Local restaurants within 10m of UAH:
Beauregard's (wings and burgers) not great, not bad
Tim's Cajun Kitchen (cajun meat and 3). Pretty good. Bread pudding used to be awesome. Now is 1tsp short of the cinnamon challenge.
Ol'Heidelberg (German). Very good. get dessert.
Rosies/Phil Sandoval's. Americanized mexican. Pretty good.
Dreamland BBQ. Never been a fan.

Don't try to stay as close as you can to UAH. There are some pretty shady areas by campus. If money isn't a problem stay at the Westin. Lots of good dining at Bridge Street and it's a short drive to UAH.

Agree with all the recommendations so far. I'll add that that there is a new Hampton Inn on Governor's Drive West that is right next to Bridge Street.

Cricket's in Madison is better than Beauregard's.
Poboy Factory is really good. I've never been to Tim's, so I can't compare them.
Below the Radar is a brewhouse with good food and a ton of beer- http://btrbrew.com/
Straight to Ale also has a good selection- www.straighttoale.com/
Blue Pants is in Madison, and is growing pretty quickly- http://www.bluepantsbrew.com/
Sam and Greg's is a pizza and gelato place downtown. They have a good beer selection if I remember correctly- http://www.samandgregs.com/

Big fan of both Poboy Factory and Tim's. They're both good. Tim's is a bit shady, but food is more authentic IMO, but I've been to Poboy factory 10X more- so, what does that tell ya?

Pane-e-veno is an italian place downtown that's damn good.

Commerce Kitchen is awesome too. About like the Veranda, but a little more refined. Price point is similar.

Have any of you tried J Gumbo's over by Super Target? Just wondering how it is.

And I second Cricket's over Beauregard's. Beauregard's frankly isn't worth it anymore. They went way up on their prices and there isn't anything they have that I can't find cheaper and/or better somewhere else.

Tim's is better than Po Boy Factory if you're in a hurry or can't get to lunch by 11 as you'll likely be waiting at Po Boy Factory. In fact, I would put Crickets and Chuck Wagon (best BBQ in Madison, but only open for lunch) in this category of "be early or be elsewhere" too.

The Nook is a good little beer bar. What it lacks in decor it makes up for in selection and a knowledgeable staff.

I agree. Cricket's >> Beau's. That said, we eat lunch at Beau's regularly. If you ask for them extra crispy, they get pretty close to Cricket's. Cricket's is a bit too far from the Arsenal for us.

Disagree w/ Tim's. I much prefer Po Boy, as does our lunch crowd. Tim's has really taken a turn south in the past year. We drive right by it on our way to Jackson Street now.

I really, _heavily_ endorse Chuckwagon on Madison Blvd. Oh. My. Word.

The Nook is a good little beer bar. What it lacks in decor it makes up for in selection and a knowledgeable staff.

I'd skip the Nook. A bit too shady an area for my tastes. Under the Radar is great, as is Amendment XXI. Do Commerce Kitchen for dinner, finish the evening after a short walk to either of the two above. Especially if you're staying at the Embassy.

Blue Plate is a great breakfast/lunch place, too.

When are you here? I might could meet up and say hi.

Cheers,

I wasn't saying Tim's was better than Poboy factory, only that it usually has a much shorter wait. I've gone to Poboy Factory many times and left because we wouldn't be able to eat in a reasonable amount of time. I haven't been to Tim's in well over a year so I haven't witnessed how far downhill it has gotten.

The Nook is in a shady area, but so long as you're with a group and don't walk there it's fine. Stem and Stein in Madison is another good place to get beer and is especially good for a date night. Eat and drink there and purchase some wine or beer to take home with you.

I went to a Amendment XXI one time. I wasn't impressed. Maybe it was the crowd there but it felt douchey.

Yeah, we used to love Tim's. Especially their Wednesday blackened stuffed pork chop special. But something changed last summer... Agree on the wait at Po Boy. Lunch time seems to be 11am sharp, or wait until 12:30pm. Otherwise, it's gonna' be a while.

Could be. I was there with a group shortly after it opened. I don't pub crawl much and wouldn't have darkened the door of Under The Radar if it weren't for the MSU Alumni gatherings there.
