Unfortunately, something like 90+% of the homeless have mental disease, so these stories usually have rollercoaster rides that end sitting back at the bottom of a valley. I hope he has much more than just AA and a freaking "Life Coach" keeping him on track.

The sad thing is this, losing someone you love is horrible. He probably didn't get the help he needed when his wife died. I know this because my sister lost her husband. She went through a lot of changes. She started drinking and it almost cost her life.

It really depends on the severity of it, and the commitment he makes to staying sober. He has already experienced a bottom that few have ever known or have a real clue about. AA programs are different depending upon where/who is in them. I agree more with the books than I do with the active participants in it. Many are more nuts than I am, if you can believe that... :)
