ok my friends, I seriously need your thoughts and help!

My son has his Ph.D in Chemistry from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tn.
He lives in Dallas, Tx. with his wife, who has her Ph.D in Cell Biology from Vanderbilt as well. Yeah, they are extremely smart! And I am proud of both of them!
She is employed at UT- Southwestern in Dallas. My son is seeking employment in the Dallas area within his field.
The problem? Everyone is saying that he is over qualified for what they are looking for at this point in time.

Do any of you have any leads for a Ph.D in Chemistry? Or, do you know a headhunter that specializes in Ph.D's in Chemistry?

He is getting VERY frustrated! He has a great personality(from his dad obviously, LOL) and he is a hard worker.

Any suggestions are appreciated! Seriously! He does NOT want to teach. He DOES want to do research.

This is a serious question Southern. Does Your Son Like beer? Beer making is a science. Chemistry is a huge part of world loved ales. Not much money to start but if that is his passion Lagunitus sold for 1/2 billion this month.

LOL. He and his wife LOVE making beer! They have supplied me for years with their small batch hand crafted beers! She was in charge of the 2,000 plus strains of yeast at Vanderbilt. Every beer they made was freaking delicious!

They have beer making equipment and a kegarator in their 1 bedroom apartment.

But I think he really wants a research position. Personally, I would love to see him open a micro-brewery.

Let me get your email or number from our mutual friends the Screws. If he has that passion...he should at least look into it.
A GREAT industry ! And money can be made being a critic, brewer, researcher.....

Is he interested in the food world?

I have a contact at CTI Foods in Arlington. They employ Chem PhDs...shockingly enough. lol

Not sure what the money is like, but if he is interested I can ask around.

You could share with all off us...just saying :) [banana]

LOL. WhiteBus. When I was there for the Norfolk State game, I gave away 2 and a half cases of my BBQ rub. Only 1 person has responded that he loved it. ( Where are the rest of you?)

I did not have room to bring beer for the 3,000 plus mile round trip!

I do not know many people in Dallas. Austin and I could help better. Boston, Raleigh, NJ I could get them jobs with a few calls.

Heck...I need to hire three PhDs in chemistry today in Raleigh to develop analytical methods.

Have him get in touch with the folks here.

Sadly my first missed game since the Breeders Cup at Monmouth Park. The Screws let me know you were coming but it was a must miss for me for many reasons. All I need to know is they say y'all are awesome. Good enough for me.

Thanks! He and his wife were looking at Raleigh last year but she decided to do her post doctorate work in Dallas for the next 2 years, not Raleigh. Dammit!
I wish I had known!

Thanks Whitebus! Janice and I had a MAJOR blast! My ego was flying high! We were introduced to Julie and RutgersAl, as well as several, actually MANY others! We did the Scarlet Walk and said hello to everyone we could!

Mr. and Mrs. Screw hosted the tailgate. RutgersRaRa got us tickets to the game. Several people chipped in for a parking pass to the Blue Lot. All in all it was my 15 minutes of fame that neither I nor Janice, will ever forget!

We had customized jerseys to wear(pictures have been previously posted). I flew my Rutgers flags on my car all the way to the game. I had the Block "R" adorning my car. In fact, one guy saw my Arkansas tags and my flags and asked me if I was the Southern Gentleman! "Why yes, yes I am"! LOL

Evidently, almost everyone is on ScarletNation!

We were treated as Rock Stars! And by God I am trying to find a way to come back!

What a trip!!!!!

Southern Gentleman, has your son considered patent law? There are a lot of patent law firms in Dallas (great freaking city--I love Dallas). No, he does not have to be a lawyer, but lots of law firm hire Ph.D. scientist if advisors and as patent agents. There is excellent job security in patents, but no lab work. It's an option, and maybe he will like it. Even though I am not a Ph.D., but I love going to work every day. I get to see something new in science and write about it.

I know a partner at a firm in Plano, TX. He has a Chem Engineering degree from some shabby institution called University of Arkansas in Fayetteville --ever hear of it?

Here are some bios of patent agents and scientific advisors (the last 3 have Ph.D's in chemistry):

If interested, post your e-mail, and I can hook you up with a guy I know at this firm. Maybe your son could talk to one of the other technical advisors and he can see if it is something he is interested in or if he considers my lovely career sleep or vomit inducing.

Southern, I think I want your son and not Huskers to find me my next wife. Your son is clearly better with chemistry, which is necessary in a relationship, whereas Huskers thinks I want a sheep.

LMAO! I found you the perfect woman! I even got her cell phone number for you! She is drop dead gorgeous with an awesome body and a beautiful voice! But perhaps the chemistry was not for you!

An embraceable ewe is NOT what you need for a relationship!

I was a former post-doc at UT-Southwestern. There are not too many research opportunities in Dallas. One suggestion is a position in the petroleum or natural gas industry, but I am not sure if those research jobs exist in Dallas. Komen is based there too but I am not sure whether he is interested in a non-profit non-research job in grant proposals. Forensics may be an option but this is merely a lab job analyzing drugs and not a research position. Forensic labs are open to hiring PhDs. My only other suggestions is checking out UNT in Fort Worth or the school in Denton. Good Luck.

Hey Southern, I'll ask my brother if he knows something, he lives right outside of Fort Worth.

But can't he catch on at another college and find something? He's in Dallas. He has a Phd. There's a thousand colleges in the Dallas area.

Matt does not want to teach. I think he is better suited for research. Unless you had some other thoughts regarding the local colleges.

Thanks for asking your brother! Networking is the best way to employment! Matt has a cousin who is an Electrical Engineer wit Exxon in Ft. Worth. But he hasn't found anything for Matt.

Wait...

They have yeast strain experience?

Don't limit that to beer - there is a HUGE need for highly customized yeast strains in the distilling industry. The need is actually greater in distilling because all beer making starts with fundamentally the same base grains during the fermentation process, whereas distilling uses a much wider variety of sources for fermentable sugars.

His wife, Mandy, was in charge of the yeast vault at Vandy.
